[OT] GTA 4 Performance uplift

Recommended Posts

What to say , i got this game too late (2010) and on my new system (check signature) i can max out any game but this.

I know its not well ported , but still i want a list of tweaks etc so that i can get optimal FPS.

Right now , my FPS goes from 25~50 and after 1 hr or so , it lags so badly that i get FPS around 15~20(possible memory leak)

Now coz of this FPS drop , im very unhappy. Further i dont know why my 5770 and Athlon II X4 620 (@2.4GHz) cant run this game well.

Please help me out to get

  • Best Command Line tweaks
  • Fix to Memory Leak
  • No more laggy textures (sometimes i see sea all over road :o)

Help will be appreciated a LOT!

Update your graphics driver: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

Update the game: http://www.rockstargames.com/support/IV/PC/patch/index.html

You're best bet is to update those. I have the PC version as well and I'm unaware of any "tweaks" that improve performance.

If you want you can try the 10.3a Preview released yesterday by AMD: http://sites.amd.com/us/underground/tips/Pages/catalyst-10-3-preview.aspx

Only for 7/Vista but it appears you are using 7.

On another forum, a few people mentioned that GTA feels like its running better than ever on their system (one of them was using a 4850, weaker than your card I think).

They are NEWER than the 10.3 that is going to release next week, but they are not WHQL-signed, if that matters to you.

EDIT: Here's the post on Neowin: https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/884486-ati-catalyst-103-preview-driver/

It contains a list of known performance improvements over 10.2 and other drivers. GTA isn't listed, but I assume some of those performance increases would carry over to more than just the game specified.

I have a GTX260/i5 and mine ran well in places but dropped to <1FPS sometimes (seriously.)

I eventually fixed this by turning off the Video Clip setting under the Game tab in settings. I think it's called video clip? It records the last 20 seconds of you playing or some ****, just turn it off. :)

Oh , thats nice

Im already using 10.3a and got 2~3 FPS boost (though not listed)

Are there any commandline tweaks which can help me for more fps and fix memory leak (yeah that video clip feature when off gives slight improvement but still im not satisfied)

That feature IMO is one of the coolest things in GTA 4.....more games need it. I remember hitting some concrete block at high speed in a garbage truck....I flew out through the window and everything, only to be able to go back and watch it in slow motion, and even control it a bit to watch the character impact the glass and everything.

If it is causing major issues (like it was with you) then definitely get rid of it, but it can lead to some epic video caps that you wouldn't have caught otherwise.

If its any consolation the issues you mention is partially why I do not have it installed. Back when it released I was on a 4850 and had similar issues as you, after about an hour I had like 200-300MB of free ram (4GB of system ram, running Vista) and had horrible lag. Also had tons of texture popping and weird stuff going on at the time the lag was happening. I ended up not even playing all the way through it and uninstalling it...could probably run it better now, but the issues you mention is what caused me to stop playing it in the first place (but this was before any patches for GTA4 were out. Definitely would not think a 5770 would have similar issues to a 4850.....it could honestly be your ram though, you only have 2GB total, I had issues with GTA4 on 4GB of system ram (granted I was running Vista, but still).

I personally do not think "Ram Optimizers" do anything that actually helps performance. From what I have seen they force things out of memory which is not good. Windows 7 is pretty good with releasing ram when other programs need it, anything extra being forced out of ram is going to affect other programs negatively.

I am not 100% positive that more ram will fix your issue, but as I mentioned I had some difficulties with running out of ram after about an hour or so of GTA4 on 4GB of system ram.

Calling it a leak it fine , hmm , btw i searched and found something called MemTurbo 4 (not updated since 2006) and ppl are suggesting this to fix memory leak. By ppl i mean GTAGARAGE ppl
