The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings

In case you didn't know about the original... The Witcher is a PC-only RPG game that was released in October '07. It did well despite being a single-player game. The reviews were good (and still are), and an enhanced edition was later released in September '08. The game was developed using BioWare's Aurora engine (also used in the Neverwinter Nights 2 games).

As of this post, The Witcher has a metascore of 81 (and an average user score of 9.3).

Same here. The first one was awesome. It's one of the few RPGs that I actually enjoyed playing. The graphics and short snippets of gameplay they showed in the debut trailer are amazing. I wonder if they're using a modified version of the Aurora engine. If they are, they've done wonders with it. The characters, animations, and environments look realistic.

In addition, the developer has revealed that it's "aiming for release in Q1 2011, and more info should be out later today!"

Agree with the comments here the original Witcher was an amazing game, sadly I never finished it as I lost my disk and the replacement I bought on steam seemed to be different somehow and ran really poorly so I gave up :(

Everything seemed perfect with it, the combat was tactical, not the usual click like a maniac, you had to time things correctly to get the most from it. Potions etc were very good. Everything just worked.

IIRC, when the original alpha video leak happened last year, Projekt RED said that Witcher 2 is using an all-new original engine they developed.

Anyways, I can't wait to see more of this bad boy; I loved the first. :D

Looks great, I was just thinking of looking The Witcher 2 up again to see when it was going to be released just the other day.

Loved the first one, the battle system was slightly annoying with pretty much the same combos over and over, but it was much more interesting than normal click to attack games.

I hope it's much better than the first. I found the dialogue cheesy, all taken into consideration (bad camera angles, no facial expression, seemingly random body motion, predictable lines) and found the whole alchemy system tedious. I quit after reaching chapter 2: as Zero Punctuation put it, this game feels like work.

The trailer does look impressive, although I don't like Geralt's new face.

Depending on the level of gameplay you do not have to use the alchemy system.....I played through the game fine without it.

Nice. I have to say, it looks awesome.

Looks really good, does anyone have a projected release date?

Q1 2011. (Y)

A little blurb on Gamespot confirming a Q1 2011 release date and that Projekt RED did indeed craft an entirely new engine for Witcher 2: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6254068.html?tag=latestheadlines;title;2

They also have a much longer preview/first impressions up as well, including another video. *NOTE: Contains early plot spoilers, apparently**: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/thewitcher2/news.html?sid=6254071&tag=topslot;thumb;1&mode=previews

:D

Cool. Thanks for the links, 2Cold Scorpio. The new engine gives Witcher 2 a more cinematic feeling than the first game. Also, the combat system sounds like its re-worked. It isn't time-based like the original.

Apparently, there's a secret message in the trailer. I guess someone found it by analyzing the trailer, frame by frame. Check it out here.

Looks good shame its not slated till 2011, was hoping to play it this year

Well, you do have amazing third person RPG/shooters out there that have or will be released this year. Mass Effect 2 (definite GOTY runner), Splinter Cell: Convinction and Mafia 2 are all AAA titles.

Nah 2010 is all over, it peaked too early, ME2 (def up there for GOTY), DAO:Awakenings...nothing left to do but hibernate til 2011, and that makes me a sad panda :(

Actually before I go hibernate im gonna boot up the witcher again as I dont really remember the powers and plot too well :D

 2010 will arguably be a better year than 2008 and 2009. God of War 3, Mass Effect 2, Heavy Rain, Just Cause 2, Final Fantasy, Yakuza 3, Splinter Cell, Gran Turismo 5, Red Dead Redemption, Lost Planet 2, Bad Company 2, Prince of Persia, Deus Ex, F1 2010, Max Payne 3, Kane & Lynch 2... The list goes on.

Yeah, several good games out this year, but far to many are either already out or coming out the first half of this year (to add to that list of two I'm really anxious for is R.U.S.E. and Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter). On the PC side, at least, I'm not seeing a lot coming out the second half of the year that's really getting me excited other than Portal 2, Deus Ex (here's hoping they don't screw it up!), and possibly Civ5. The new Medal of Honor could be good; I'm keeping an eye on it. I certainly could be forgetting something, but pickings are sounding dry this fall/winter.

Oh well, it's a good time to work on my backlog of games and replay some old classics, as well as pick up a few that came out recently I haven't gotten around to yet, such as Dragon Age: Awakening, Bad Company 2, and Napoleon: Total War. :)
