I'm thinking of getting a netbook - Wind U160 or so - for my vacation.

And it would be nice to run in some free time C&C RA2 or C&C Generals on it.

Is it doable and playable on a system like this... Wind U160 specs ?

Probably not. GMA 3150 But i'm not sure, we need a second opinion.

Red Alert 2 plays fine on my MSI Wind U100 which has the GMA 950 graphics, never played Generals so carn't say if that will.

If GMA 3150 is anything like the GMA 950 its probably one of the worse graphics chipsets you can get in a laptop / netbook, i didnt buy it for games but as you say its nice to play a few... GTA 3 is playable in 640x480 low detail so Generals might be.

Its very similar to the GMA 950 (Basically a die shrunk 3100) very poor :p

i could play command and conquer 3 on my macbook at max res (1280x800) with graphics set to low/medium. the gpu on my macbook is a intel gma950 so you shouldn't have any problems.

The MacBook has a Core 2 Duo processor. Netbooks will be powered by an Atom processor. Biiiig difference.

I can play on my netbook no problem (I have an HP DV2-1012AX), but it has a 512MB Dedicated Graphics card. :D

If you're getting a netbook, you need to seriously consider that it's not for gaming though, unless you go hi-end like I have.

Look for an Ion powered netbook like the Ideapad S12, it should handle games and hd video fine.

True, but you'll have crap all battery life. :(

Yes it is in fact playable, I have 2 Netbooks. 1 Acer and another HP - both of which can play Generals.

I had to turn the graphics all the way down and play it at 800x600 ( I plug it into an external monitor )

Also I use a 1GB ReadyBoost Sandisk memory card on both

Gameplay is fine, although it starts to page the graphics a little when there is a huge amount of fighting and units on the screen.

Ions have good battery life... where did you get that misconception..

Do you have one?

Compared to other battery life of laptops, not amazing. OK, but not great.

I had one yes.. Upgraded from my original EEE-PC 900 to the Lenovo S12

Cant really bitch about its battery life though also quoting an Intel document when Intel made it damn hard for manufacturers to use ION in the first place isnt really credible... The fact the two are at each others throats regularly doesnt help

Since we are talking about Netbooks here, what do you guys think is the best one at the moment, or coming out sometime during the summer?

I'm looking to get one this summer if the spec is decent enough. I won't use it for gaming, but would like a dual-core if possible, and 2-4 GB of RAM.

Great. Thx for the replies.

I guess it will run (well) on this kinda netbook.

But I will primary use the netbook for just emailing and surfing some sites for hotels and things to do around the neighborhoud while abroad. The 'game' factor is a nice-to-have, but not a necessity.

2-4gb of ram and a dual core, you're looking at lower power notebooks with 10 hours of battery life and a 13" screen. a la asus ul30vt

i don't know any 10" netbooks with those specs.

Newegg has a few Netbooks with those specs:

For example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220659

Not many, but hence why I said "coming out this summer"

The HP mini 311 which I am typing from right now, on vacation. It has a ION and a 11in screen I believe and so far I have been able to play all games I have tried. I think a dual core atom and a ion2 would be the best but those are still quite expensive might as well get a full notebook. my mini311 was only $300. I don't think netbooks are as slow as people say they are.

    • It seems I was wrong. Modifying the registry manually does not have an effect at all, even after restart. Just use ViveTool for now. I'm going to need to investigate this...
    • Just a small addition - If you're running the command from Powershell, the syntax is: ./vivetool /enable /id:41073112
    • The weak US Governments and DoJ have never been good enough at regulating greedy giants like Apple and Microsoft. These companies want your money yet they will take away your useful features and choices too to sell you the "next upgrade" and no Govt acts against that.
