Half-Life Menu Resolution Question

Recommended Posts

(Copy and pasting from another forum I posted this at with no response.)

I recently installed Half-Life in anticipation of the second and Condition Zero coming out soon. There's a little problem, however: my monitor has been having fits over the menu resolution being stuck at 640 x 480. Whenever it changes to the game it cuts off on the side of the screen so that I'm missing about an inch on the left and right (what should be there isn't, in other words). I've tried ALT + TAB to change the resolution, but after I do that my monitor always flickers and goes back to the whole missing a part of the screen thing.

Anyways, for my question: can I change the menu resolution? I would like to make it 1024 x 768 like the in-game resolution and my desktop resolution so my monitor doesn't mess up. Is there anyway that I can do that?

Thanks!

use Steam. it uses menus of true game resolution

tho there is no HalfLife game itself, only mods

I found the website, but it shows no area to download it.

And what do you mean there is no Half-Life game itself, only mods? Only mods get the certain resolutions?

im sure the q1 parameter would work in cs, although ive never tried it.

make your shortcut look like this cstrike.exe -width 800x600x32

or try turning your monitor off while loading a game and turning it on when its completely loaded

or the resolution your're using is too high, besides 600 is the best resolution for half-life since the aiming is pixel perfect and with smaller resolutions theres less pixels..... so its easier to kill people :)

all HL menus are ALWAYS 640x480. there is no way to change that.

you can download steam here http://www.gamershell.com/download_1048.shtml?q=steam

wrong. it's other way around. since it will apear to you that your xhair is over somebody while you might be off.

according to your logic playing at resolution of like 16x16 will make you perfect sniper w/ para.

im wrong? you sure about that? too bad ive been playing cs for 3 years and 4 month in cal-i.... so i would know a bit better than you

this is not my logic, its been proven and explained by various half-life coders and playing on a 16x16 resolution WOULD make you a perfect sniper with a para. Did you ever wonder why tournaments dont allow resolutions below 600 ? its not only because of the sniper blackout........

and no, it doesnt appear that your crosshair is over somebody when its off... the middle of the crosshair is not where the bullets go, but rather the top left is, and with a higher resolution the crosshair is smaller so theres a bigger chance of putting your top-left part on the persons head

OK, I got it, thanks :) A few questions, though:

1) I have Half-Life already installed. Did it install another version or something, because the folder for Steam is now like 1GB and my overall HD size just increased (as in a few gigs more was just added) and it took a while to download it... What's up?

2) Can I move my files (saves, controls, etc) from /Seirra/Half-Life to whatever folder the Half-Life from steam is in?

3) Can I make a shortcut to just launch the Steam version?

4) Why does it take so long to load the game, it's just Half-Life, right?

Anyways, thanks. I'm not quite sure if it installed another one or something, though. But I'd like to remove my second if there is. Thanks.

I have had steam for a few months now,

and as i understand it, it is CS1.6, which comes with some new improvements, like 2 new guns and a shield. The graphical interface is better IMO, but i am still running 1.5 since all leagues are requiring it.

Hey !

You're saying that lower resolution = more kills ?

Hmm.. Don't you find it easier to get HS when you go into higher resolutions ?

Also, one more question, do you not find it strange that the ak47 aiming is all messed in 640x480 on 3rd-4th bullet compared to higher reso. ?

And yeah, could you please explain the "Top-Left" xhair you talked about ?

Are you saying the during recoil bullets will most of the time go to the top-left of the xhair ??

Thank you.

He's right dude,

Leets Play with either 640 or 800 res.

It allows for "More Power" in terms of accuracy.

although you can't see the menu at all and everything looks like crap, if you want to do better in CS you gotta use those res,

I've notice my performace sky rocket with 800, it don't look too bad and accuracy is amazing,

My firned is Cal-m... (nowhere near cal i) however he knows all the leet tricks and that was one of them.

if this is the case does what hand you hold the gun in effect it and mirror over to the right side???

lmfao just read that back and i'm even more confused now

Well, I don't really understand the point of it now. Why not just update Half-Life with the V-GUI or something? What's the point of putting it up on Steam for free, no less?
becuase this is how valve will be releasing games in the future. and it will be subscrition based. steam1.6 had fields for price.

it takes a while to start the 1st time becuase it's downloading maps, sounds, textures, etc.

it also has improved anticheat which is updated automaticly too.
