Volume Shrinking problem

Recommended Posts

I'm having a strange issue when trying to shrink my C: volume on my laptop so I can set up a second partition. It is something I've done in the past and later merged the partitions, but I want to do it again.

When trying to shrink, I'm only able to shrink it by 1.4 gigs. The capacity of the drive is 111 gb with 89 free. Checking the application event log as per the help shows that the file causing me problems is:

\\?\Volume{f20b5eff-0ee4-11df-bcac-806e6f6e6963

\$BitMap::$DATA

0x1b9503e

0x52c734

-S--D

Running the command fsutil volume querycluster C: 0x1b9503e points me to the directory \$BitMap::$Data, but when trying to change directory to that path in a command window, it says access is denied. It is not a folder that shows up in Explorer.

Any thoughts?

Your files are far too fragmented to do so. Windows doesn't write files to the disk in an orderly fashion, and because of the files being in different places on your disk, you'll find that it can't do this. Perform a defrag, and delete some larger files, this should allow you to perform this operation.

I defrag every day, and there are no large files on this laptop at all.

Ive got that stupid "extra" partition on my desktop too, what the hell is it, I originally thought it was the system 100mb partition, then thought my disk had become corrupt, but after a reinstall it came back, I have a RAID 0 striped array on there too, hmmm Im gonna have to investigate this now

simple. use another partition app like EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition, it's free and does the job, the windows one sucks so bad so i use that EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition, it has never failed me yet.
