Linksys WRT160N - No WIFI/Internet, only Networking...

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I have the Linksys WRT 160N wireless router version 1 and have had it running DD-WRT Firmware for a year now. All of a sudden a day ago the internet stopped working.

- Wifi signal disappeared (Wifi icon on router no longer lights up)

- Internet doesn't work (Internet icon on router still lights up, despite the lack of internet.)

- There is no way to access 192.168.1.1 to control the router settings.

- Despite the problems, accessing shared files on other computers through the router still works for some reason.

And also, attaching my Motorola cable modem straight to my computer gives me internet.

I've tried clicking the reset button on the Linksys Router but it did nothing. And also clicked on the connect button on top of the router - didn't help.

I asked Linksys support - my router's out of warranty and so they refused, unfortunately.

Do you guys have any ideas what's causing this sudden issue? Is my router somehow broken?

Try doing a 30-30-30 reset. Hold the reset button on the back for 30 seconds, then without releasing the button, pull the power for 30 seconds, and then still without releasing the reset button, plug the power back in and hold the reset for 30 more seconds. That should reset the router to factory (DD-WRT default) settings, which is pretty much the only chance you have of fixing it.

If your saying you can not connect to the router lan IP, ie 192.168.1.1 -- its possible it bit the big one.. You don't have something else on the network that could be conflicting with the 192.168.1.1 address?

The factory reset would be worth trying -- but again its possible it just died?? They do that sometimes ;)

If you it was working for local access to the routers UI, just could not get internet -- could be a few things to look at -- but since your saying you can not even get to its web interface on 192.168.1.1, doesn't look good.. Can you telnet or ssh to it? Did you have the those features enabled - dd-wrt allows for both telnet and ssh access.

Not sure about the 160N, but have seen when flashing some other linksys routers using the vxworks killer and such that it sets the routers wan interface mac to a default one vs the machines actual mac.. And that was the case there might be someone else on the ISPs network with the same mac -- which could explain why no IP for the router, but your PC works fine, etc. Easy enough to fix if that was the issue... But since your saying you can not even get to the lan IP web UI, either the router is bad (again try the hard reset) or you got something else conflicting on your lan, etc.

Hey guys, so I found the solution to this problem after some time. The router somehow bricked itself after long time use.

I fixed it by opening it up, and shorting pin 14 on the memory chip with a big screwdriver like so: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=69834&highlight=&sid=365cd38b656400a88550d23893631179

I hope this helps somebody else with their WRT160N!
