Mouse randomly double-clicks instead of single-click

I am assuming this is simply a hardware issue, such as the mouse button wearing out and registering multiple clicks every now and then? This is most obvious when I am browsing through my computer, every now and then, a folder will open on the first click of my mouse (the second physical click ends up selecting a file in that folder). But I also have a few issues in games, at times, my mouse will not click at all, so I will end up clicking 2-3 times to (for example) fire my weapon in TF2.

Is it worth taking the mouse apart to look for obvious signs of wear on the mouse trigger? Should I bother hooking up another mouse for a day to see if the issue is perhaps not mouse-related before buying a new one? The issue seemingly randomly cropped up a few days ago and its really starting to get on my nerves, I tried uninstalling and even reinstalling my mouse drivers and the issue is still there. And it seems to only do it with the left-click button, while its hard to tell if right-click does it (other then a menu opening then closing instantly, but I do not right-click very often anyway), I have not noticed any issues with right-click.

Another thing which the mouse seems to give me trouble with, is if I am trying to select a line of text or selecting multiple files by dragging it will sometimes stop mid-task. If I am selecting text, it will stop selecting and I have to click and drag back at the beginning to get what I wanted to select. When selecting files, the same thing will happen, it will start highlighting files, then it will randomly stop (I know, I can use ctrl+click to select the other ones, but thats not the point).

Mostly just looking for confirmation or advice before buying a new mouse on what the issue could be. The mouse has worked fine up until now, but it is getting somewhat old for as often as I use it (a few years old of pretty much constant daily usage, I ran a program awhile back that calculated my average clicks per day at around 3000-4000, it is definitely a lot but I sometimes find myself clicking around pages randomly while I am reading them for no reason), I just want to be sure before I buy another mouse that it is the cause of the problem.

No, I did check the setting though and its still on the defaults for Windows 7. I am also certain that many times that it happens, I am only single-clicking the physical button. I have tried to select a folder before, but instead of simply highlighting it, it has opened the folder entirely instead of selecting it.

Also, in games, it sometimes doesn't click, which can really mess you up in FPS games.

I usually have this problem after 8-12 months using the same mouse. That's because I play a lot of counter-strike and it requires a few thousands clicks/hour. Well I'm afraid to tell you that this is a problem with your mouse hardware and has nothing to do with your computer. You may try a different mouse and see if that works , and while you are still using your defective mouse you can configure it to switch the buttons functionality and make the right one work as if it was the left, it would help you a little.

Chances are the microswitch is dying, this happened to my Copperhead

Get a soldering iron and remove the microswitch (it is usually a small self contained box shaped object with a button on it) and replace it with another one from an old mouse you no longer want

Unless either mouse is designed in some way completely different it should just be a simple switch over and once assembled work a treat

Sadly I only have 1 mouse that is not being used on another computer, but that mouse is reserved for computer repair of friends and families computers, otherwise that sounds like the perfect solution. Maybe I will save this old mouse and, when a new one eventually goes bad, simply replace the switch with the right-click microswitch of this older one.

Well, time to start looking for a new mouse then.

It may be drivers related.

I tried both the default (MS) and Logitech drivers.....I also did not have this problem a few weeks ago, it just suddenly started happening about a week or two ago. I have ran Windows 7 since RTM release to MSDN:AA, and the issue just started happening here recently.

I also did have a few extra mice sitting around, but, I have been using a trackball not a mouse for god knows how long, and the mice I had used small square microswitches, while the trackball used longer, rectangular microswitches.

Long story short, I just ordered a Razer Imperator with one of their mousepads from Newegg with a combo deal (only $5 off, but still cheaper than buying direct from Razer). It will definitely take some getting use to, as it has been years since I used a traditional mouse on my main system (only ever use it when repairing computers and what not), but the trackball I have had (Logitech Trackman) is a bit too small for my hand (always feel like I am not holding it properly, and it sometimes gets uncomfortable), but theres really no other trackball mice that you can buy for under $100 that seems to be worth anything. Plus, I would really like to have more than 3 buttons on my mice again.

I will probably do horribly in gaming when it first gets here, but I hope to get better overall with a more comfortable and accurate mouse (while I can do flickshots with my trackball, it overall seems very inaccurate, I cannot snipe worth a crap on my trackball, and I use to snipe all the time in UT and similar games from that time).

If you haven't tried it it may be worth just connecting and disconnecting it a few times to see if that helps. My wireless Logitech first did it about a month after I got it and all I could find was about the switch failing. Thinking it was ridiculous I plugged it into netbook running Ubuntu and it was fine. Plugged it back into my Windows 7 machine and it was fixed. Since then it has done it again, which I solved by unplugging/plugging the receiver with the mouse both on/off (took a few combinations for it to work).

Failing that it is likely the switch as already stated. But if you have access to a another computer then try it on that and see. :)
