DVDs Could Hold 1,000x Capacity of Blu-rays With New Japanese Research

This is amazing but it's nothing compared to what we'll see in the future.

of course. but the thing is... if we got anything even close to this on a disc in the semi-near future that would be a MASSIVE leap forward and allow us a lot of breathing room for many years instead of like DVD where it's OK but it's nearly as big of storage space as it used to be only a handful of years ago.

but then again if we could get anything near those capacities in the near future (say 3-5 years) that would be a HUGE leap forward as DVD's ain't nearly as 'huge' as they used to be given that a lot of content online is HD now. with these 4.7GB or 7GB or 8.5GB file sizes for 720p x264.

it's like we need blu-ray burners and disc to become cheap (say $50-$70 for burner or less. and 1 dollar or less for the discs) to have them be like DVD was only a handful of years ago.

but if we got a 4.7TB disc for a reasonable price that would be A LOT of storage as you could basically fit everything on 1 disc. or maybe a handful of disc tops for those who have A LOT of data on there PC's.

Not everything can be streamed though and as a portable medium it is nice. Not to mention that all data on any medium could be destroyed. You can't view your content without an internet connection with streaming so if the network goes down or one is unavailable your data is stranded.

What you said is all true, but my point is down the road as connections become wider spread and more content becomes available, streaming will become a much more viable option. And sure, all data can be destroyed, but it's a lot less likely when it's stored in the cloud and professionally backed up than it is when you have it locally, sometimes not even backed up.

You scratch it, it breaks. It gets too much humidity, it breaks. You're on the road and you left it at home, you can't watch it. I understand that sense of safety the cloud will somehow take away from us, but in the end the data will be managed professionally and backed up multiple times a day to insure its safety. In the end...

Yep, and if my computer needs a new image, then I can't do it as I will need an internet connection to download the image and all my files.

With all the issues surrounding privacy, a "cloud" like this isn't going to happen any time soon. I'd be much happier having HDDs and DVDs around my own home to back things up :)

    • Walmart was still selling the Apple Watch SE 2 on Black Friday in 2024. I got 1 for my mom and one for my dad for christmas.
    • But apple has ASSURED us that this is private. So, it's private. I expect the same "leeway" shown Microsoft to be reflected here.
    • ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE keyboard is 27% off on Amazon by Ivan Jenic The ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE is currently $159.99 on Amazon, down from $219.99. That's 27% off and $60 saved on a keyboard that combines retro and modern design, while being one of the most responsive and adaptable 75% boards available right now (purchase link down below). The ROG Falchion Ace comes with the HFX V2X magnetic switches that allow you to set actuation anywhere between 0.1mm and 3.5mm with 0.01mm fine-tuning steps. It also comes with Rapid Trigger, a feature that resets the key the moment you release it rather than waiting for a fixed reset point, which makes a noticeable difference in fast-paced games. And finally, an 8,000Hz polling rate should make the response time feel instant. The build quality is decent, with dense plastic and powder-coated aluminum, which is expected from a keyboard at this price point. There’s also the onboard adjustment wheel, which lets you tweak actuation and Rapid Trigger sensitivity without opening any software. For competitive gaming, the ROG Falchion Ace is hard to beat at this price. And those who appreciate old-school hardware, especially those white keyboards we’ve all grown up with, will likely also appreciate the looks of this keyboard. A carry case is included.
