How to Use- Tweak NT,lets u use xp prog on win2003

Recommended Posts

What it does: Makes your computer think your using Windows XP home. Allows you to install ANY windows xp compatible software.

Method:TweakNT! I had to format my system 5 times...COMPLETE FORMAT

BUT YOU NEED ONE SIMPLE COMPLETE FORMAT-COMPLETE FORMAT, not simple quick format...install Windows 2003 Server

....and then configure a new user with Auto-logon, then disable the CTR+ALT+DEL key use so u dont have to use that to logon...then do the tweak to activate to Home XP. When u restart u get an activation screen. Go to Telephone Activation and then goto Remind LATER. Thats it - it should get you to your desktop and all settings will remain active - server settings with workstation. only change will say ur computer in Wind XP Home...goto HELP and Support and u can see that its still Win 2003 Server ...now all this is successful with Server 2003 Trial Version - available from Microsoft for free...never tried the retail one!

But why not turn it into Windows XP Professional ?

Btw anyone that does not know how to use TweakNT really shouldnt be using a Server OS anyway ;) they should indeed be using XP Home lol.

Well it doest make a difference whether its XP HOME OR PRO when u use ntswitch....i used to convert to home and it worked but i dont have the guts to try professional and then make a mistake again and have to format my system another few times. im happy with what i have.

As for working on trial...read what i said above and itll work fine. works perfectly with the trial. thats what i have...it works wonders!

It worked on my XP pro with SP1 quite good. I converted the system into a Advanced server (.net server). Surprising to find that the system performance increased noticebly. the hardware benchmarks did not show improvement but the system reativity increased.

Anybody knows why the same system works faster under .net advanced server but slower in xp sp1 pro. :)

wel if u convert XP Pro to advanced server, i really dont think theres much a system performance increase...all its supposed to do is make your computer think its a server . THE MINUS POINT: It may not let you instal XP compatible softwares from now on which ARE NOT compatible with 2003 server! That may hamper your system operations because already XP installed programs which are not compatible with Advanced Server may cause massive glitches and cause problems.

try installing an XP compatible program that IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH A SERVER....im sure it wont work...as for games...games are supposed to work with server's anyways...programs that run on xp and not on servers...try installing those..they shouldnt let u install them to my testing.

the TweakNT method does allow you to install some programs that wouldn't otherwise work on a server such as partition magic and norton antivirus. However microsoft software that is not designed to work on server, such as intellitype software doesn't work as microsoft software checks properly which operating software is in use. Games aren't designed to run on servers, what happens is that companies that make software like norton antivirus make versions to run on workstations and seperate server versions which often cost in excess of 10 times more than their workstation equivalent. In order to stop people using the far cheaper workstation version on a server they add a check to their software to prevent it running on a server. They would work fine on the server, they just don't want them to.

it's not just microsoft software that knows what the OS really is, it's the windows installer. any program that uses the windows installer has the option of installing on only specific versions of windows (like other installers) but the windows installer checks version numbers, and the home/pro/server status as well, while other installers do not.

Download or find TweakNT. And convert ur 2003 server to think its windows home edition and then install any Xp compatible program (like Norton 2003 or 2004 beta) or anything...and it works..after u install ur programs...if u dont like the Home Edition screen u get, just use tweaknt to turn back to windows 2003 server and ur program will continue working. simple as that....

Question from people : why not convert to windows xp pro? - Answer: 90% of the time it doesnt work on most computers

Does it work on the trial version? Answer - if you have already disabled ctr+alt+delete and have an automatic login script so that u dont get asked ur username and password to login...then yes...after u run tweak nt it will ask u to activate windows again...GO TO Telephone...then goto...REMIND LATER...and your done!!!

Everything works...pre-tested on Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition - TRIAL VERSION!

lucky you. i got the blue-screen followed by ccomputer restarts when i tried converting to xp pro. i had to format my laptop all over again.

when i did it to home xp havent had a problem since....but then again....i decided to stick to xp home(original license) cuz win 2003 doesnt support my inbuilt infra-red device and xp suits me well enough...i use hibernate instead of shutdown so i dont have to go through slow boot processes.

plus xp is pretty stable since i dont use any high memory usage programs either.

Does this conversion works on Windows Server 2003 Corporate Edition??

Because I've tried to convert a working installation of Server 2003 an I got an error with product Activation saying I had a Product ID don't matching my product.

Any ideas??

No. It only works correctly for the retail version.

it does work on the trial too. ive done it and so have people at msfn - they have a 20 page tutorial on how its done...its pretty easy but long time taking...cuz if u fail once then u gotta format ur drive again...and start from scratch.

Yeah, Trial and Retail versions work fine (most of the time)

Corp version gives you the 2 finger solute on logon. ;)

The changes are mostly cosmetic yeah, but like someone was saying it does fool some programs enough to make them install when otherwise they wouldnt have. Worth a play but i really question the stability of the OS after such major registry changes, especially running an AV program that isnt designed for the OS in question. Let us not forget that Windows 2003 has some slight kernal changes, might make the AV program improperly detect virus's... :/

    • I can name 10x that on why not to switch.... It's funny outlook/office are going towards web app wrappers, and then MS is now preaching native apps again.... ugh can we just pick a lane and stay in it
    • Absolutely NOBODY has suggested such a conclusion. I am affirming the sober reality check that AV2's overall market adoption will take longer than AV1's adoption rate -- which, by the way, is the whole point of the article! While PCI-SIG is productive (on paper), other WGs have created all sorts of confusing progress plans that consumers have tuned-out of their improvements... HTML/W3C, USB, HDMI, BT, WIFI (ieee802.11) as a few other groups where spec naming conventions, split progress paths, overlapping ambitions... I'm not critiquing the AV specs group; I'm simply affirming that adoption for AV2 faces headwinds beyond the macroeconomics of it all.
