Awesome, "later this year", let me just see if I'm doing anything that day...

Blatantly not coming to the West until 2011

Why if it's already in English?

Hong Kong, 1 November 2010- Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong (SCEH)(*1)today announced that the highly anticipated "GRAN TURISMO?5" (GT5) (English / Traditional Chinese version)

It will be a miricle if they release it by the end of this year, not holding any of my hope in it but considering how many times it has ment to be released already and all we have now is a "Later this year" If they fail to launch by christmas its going to hurt Sonys takings compared to Kinect which will be moving 360's for Microsoft.

compared to Kinect which will be moving 360's for Microsoft.

That's doubtful. Microsoft put out a review embargo on Kinect, and they're not letting anyone review them before the release date, which doesn't give much hope for Kinect. On top of that, they issued a take-down notice to Destructoid simply for mocking their ads. Another sign of Kinect's fate? If Microsoft can't take a little criticism directed at their ads, and they refuse to let anyone review it before release day, surely that shows that they know it's not going to be a raving success? Sure, it'll probably sell a few tens of thousands of units around Christmas time, but then the sales will probably dry up completely.

I think you should check the kinect thread about how its sold out nearly everywhere and now prices on ebay are going through the roof. Microsoft themself are stating millions will be sold, they usually seem to be pretty on the money with numbers and dont open there mouth about them unless they know they can back them up. Im betting they are basing this information off presales and they will move alot more units then tens of thousands.

At the very least, I hope they've sorted out the lag with Kinect, because when I got to play with it, it was horrendous, and this was on Kinect Sports, which is one of the first-party Kinect games.

Do you know of any companies that are going to sit by and watch their product/marketing be mocked?

Nope, didn't think so.

Would you class Microsoft as, let's see, "Morons" for not letting anyone review Kinect, Jordan?

It doesn't exactly show their confidence in it if they won't let anyone review it before it goes on sale. No, they're not morons, they're just brave taking a gamble like this.

Now let's all stop talking about Kinect in this thread, and get back to GT5. :)

Sales will dry up just Like the KIN phone lol.:pinch:

False. They are not allowing reviews to be "posted" prior to the street date (as they have done with their products in the past).

Kinect is going to be an epic fail and only sell a couple thousand.

We are still waiting for lag to get ironed out of Move as well. I suspect both products will improve over time. I experienced some lag with Kinect at the mall a couple months ago. I have some pretty bad lag moments with Move as well.

Oh yeah, just did another search, and you're right. They are however apparently a bit reluctant to send out units for reviews:

With reportedly half a billion dollars being spent to market Kinect for Xbox 360, Microsoft is placing a lot of faith on their new motion controller. However, Microsoft?s decision to block the publication of pre-release reviews is a huge red flag that indicates a lack of confidence regarding their $150 peripheral.

On top of the review embargo, the company is hesitant about sending out Kinect peripherals to the press, which indicates that Microsoft wants their advertising campaign to do all the talking. Microsoft also issued a cease and desist order to Destructoid, who poked fun at the new Kinect commercials. The reason? They accused the media outlet of ?engag[ing]in other unauthorized activities relating to copyrighted works published by Microsoft.?

I haven't suffered from any serious lag in the games I've tested with it so far. The only lag I've noticed is in Sports Champions, but only when you're taking a victory picture, after winning a cup. :p I have admittedly had a couple of moments when the game refused to set up the controller properly, in Heavy Rain, and Racket Sports. The latter did work after another attempt, but I didn't really like it, as it felt a lot like Wii Sports. You have almost no control, you just swing away. I haven't tried Heavy Rain again yet, but I plan to soon to see if it will work.

Apologies for talking about Kinect again in here. Just needed to clarify a couple of things, and admit I made a mistake on one point. :p

Lucky Numbers: X1, star of GT5

Red_Bull_X1_Car.jpg

It?s the first and fastest car that players of the eagerly-awaited Gran Turismo 5 video game will drive, but we unpixellate this dream machine and give you the maths behind Adrian Newey?s automotive creation, the X1...

0.98...

At 4.75m long, the X1 isn?t a lot longer than your average family motor like a Ford Focus (4.17m) or VW Golf (4.2m), but it is a lot wider at 2.18m. But then it does have to corner astonishly quickly? It?s also one heck of a lot lower at 0.98m. In fact, it?s so low that it?s only 3cm taller than the maximum height allowed for a Formula One car. So getting in the real car, as in F1, could be a bit tricky if you?re as tall as Mark Webber (180cm+) but not as used to getting in a low-slung car as Mark Webber. The advantage of the Sony PS3 version will be that it is much easier to get into. Worldwide, sofa cushions might only sit an average of 42cm from the floor, but they are much more easily accessible.

6...

X1 power comes thanks to a six-cylinder 3,000cc engine with direct injection. This 3-litre V6 produces 1,483bhp. That?s about 283 more horses than the most powerful production road car out there, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. The X1 kicks out this much grunt at 15,000rpm. At this rate, that means all six of its cylinders and pistons are displacing exploding petrol vapour every 1/250th of a second. That?s why V6 engines make such a lot of noise. (Twin turbos also help in this respect.)

450...

The current maximum speed recordholder in the road car production stakes is, of course, the latest Veyron, which has topped out at a staggering 431.072kph (267.856mph), but the X1 trumps even this, with over 450kph (280mph) possible. Hold on to your hats. (Actually, there?s no need, as you?ll have a clear perspex hood between you and the elements.)

9,800...

It?s been a while since fans (ie the things that blow air, not enthusiasts) were used at the top level of motorsport to aid aerodynamics ? 1970s ?fan cars? are legend in F1 history ? but the one on the X1 creates up to 9,800N (that?s Newtons, which measure weight compared to gravity, not mass), which is equal to 1.63G. It?s the wings that really create the downforce, though, thanks to the ?Venturi effect?. At 100kph (virtually a standstill for a supercar), it?s barely even having an effect at 0.17G. But by the time you get up to 400kph, it?s creating 2.78G and making the X1 stick like a limpet to the road surface.

0?60...

Most supercars will nowadays reach the traditional mark of 60mph (96.5kph) in under four seconds, but even dragsters, the traditional fast-starters of the motorsports world at around two seconds, would be left standing by the X1. It goes from 0?60 in a face-melting 1.4 seconds, about the same amount of time it takes to say ?1.4 seconds?. And it gets better: doubling that speed takes just double the time ? 120mph (193kph) in 2.8 seconds ? showing the brutal acceleration curve is, er, actually not a curve, but a straight line! It doesn?t level out much up to 200mph (320kph), either. This takes just 6.1 seconds. Are your eyes watering?

618.75...

Despite stopping quite a lot of tarmac from being seen at any one time, the X1?s racing bodywork is as light as a feather compared to a beefy grand tourer?s. A Veyron weighs a whopping 1,888kg, but an unladen X1 computes to just 545kg. Even its gross weight (ie with fuel etc added) only makes it 615kg. That?s actually about as much as the original Mini, which weighed in at 617kg. A Mini, as its name suggests, is quite a lot smaller (the original one from back in the 1950s anyway). Mind you, everything is comparative, and 600kg is a lot in some contexts? Lateral and longtitudinal G-forces (ie when cornering and going straight) at 300kph are 8.25G. Mark Webber has recently revealed that he must only weigh 75kg ? no mean feat for a six-foot guy ? effectively the same as his shorter F1 counterparts. Even being as svelte as this doesn?t stop G-forces making you weigh more than eight times as much, though ? 8.25G = 618.75kg for your average racing driver. That?s about the same as a fully-grown polar bear ? or a 1959 Mini, of course!

    • OpenAI is rolling out a major upgrade to ChatGPT memory by Pradeep Viswanathan OpenAI is rolling out a major upgrade to ChatGPT's memory, making the system more capable, current, and scalable across long-term use. Memory allows ChatGPT to remember useful details about users, including their preferences, projects, and constraints. Instead of starting every conversation from scratch, ChatGPT can use this context to provide more relevant responses in future chats. OpenAI first launched saved memories in February 2024. That feature allowed users to explicitly ask ChatGPT to save information into its memory, such as travel plans or writing preferences. However, this system had limits because it depended heavily on users giving clear instructions to remember something. Additionally, saved memories could become stale over time. In April 2025, OpenAI expanded memory by allowing ChatGPT to reference past chat context outside the saved memories list. This was powered by a background process called “dreaming,” which automatically curates memories from chat history. This made ChatGPT better at learning from natural conversation without requiring users to manually save every detail. Today, OpenAI announced a more capable and compute-efficient memory architecture built on top of dreaming. This new system improves ChatGPT’s ability to carry forward useful context, follow user preferences, and remain accurate as time passes. According to OpenAI’s internal evaluations, the new system improves factual recall from 67.9% in 2025 to 82.8% in 2026. Preference adherence improves from 55.3% to 71.3%, while accuracy over time improves from 52.2% to 75.1%. The best part of this new system is a new memory summary page where users can review ChatGPT's memories. Users can even update details, correct information, or give instructions on what topics ChatGPT should bring up and when. This new, improved memory system is available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the US starting today. It will roll out to more countries, as well as Free and Go users, in the coming weeks.
    • I work for a video production company in Australia. The camera operators shoot footage and then pass the SD card over to the editors. Much easier than handing over the entire camera. Plus, on a busy day you can hand off the SD card and then pop another in for the next shoot. Or, you might have used multiple SD cards because you need the extra space for a long shoot. I also use USB cables and wifi for transferring footage, but in many cases an SD card reader is the easiest method.
