[Official] Kinect - Over 4 million units sold!

PS on a personal note, all the tweets that I saw which started this thing. In my opinion the media is more angry about MS not giving them what they think they deserve before the general public.

Case in point.

On tonight's episode of How I Met Your Mother, Maury Povich walks out of a NYC store with a Xbox 360 and a Kinect! Maury has our Kinect!
RT @GigawattConduit: @GI_AndyMc to journalists, isn't that a troubling sign that they haven't sent you stuff yet? Andy: Very much so.

.To put it in perspective, Sony had Move to us a month before launch.

.i thought Kinect was being touted as a big new product launch at the same level as a new system. All these facts don't add up.

Unlike other things MS has had demo booths in some shops so people could wak in and try it, I guess it's not a full review for the different games but still you get a very good idea of how it'll play regardless. So those lucky enough to actually try it out have all, as far as I've seen posted, come back saying it was fun.

Kinect is so expensive in India. Costing $250 :/

Will just try getting one from abroad. My friends will totally love it and I would love to play with them. Seems like a lot of fun to me :)

Here's a video (mind you this was over a month ago), Jessi said right at the end.

Jeez they're really pushing this in Australia, watched the rugby league four nations this morning and Kinect adverts were everywhere. Around the sides of the pitch and even used on the big screen before the video ref decision is given...

They did say they're going to push it big, wait for the flood of Windows Phone 7 ads as well once they really get into it.

Business Insider: Kinect Pre-Orders Sold out At Amazon, Best Buy #1

Amazon U.S. and Best Buy's online site are no longer taking pre-orders for Kinect, the motion-controlled game sensor for the Xbox 360 that launches November 4th.

A quick check of Amazon's U.S. product page for Kinect bundled with one game reveals that preorders are now available only through affiliates. You can still pre-order bundles with a new Xbox 360, however. The Kinect page on Best Buy simply says "Coming Soon." GameStop and Wal-Mart are still taking orders.

The pre-order sellouts follow similar reports from the U.K. earlier this month, and suggest that Microsoft has a hit on its hands. Or at least that there are a lot of Xbox 360 users out there who want to extend the lifecycle of the console for another couple of years with the new gadget.

Only time will tell how many they really sell but I think it's got enough going for it that it'll be a success. Also there was that one bit over at Penny Arcade that said if the hardcore die-hards hate something enough it'll automatically sell great, like god's just screwing with you I guess.

I hated the idea until I tried it, I don't know if I'm "hardcore" but I'm surely not casual, I think it will be a pretty big hit.

Where did you try it out at, and what game(s)?

I'm a systems engineer at a Fortune 100 company and I was at a MS event and got lucky to be part of a small group that tried it. I didn't have long and personally spent a lot of time playing with interface navigation and then got about 2 minutes of the dodge ball stuff in, but I really enjoyed it. I had enough fun in the 5 minutes I played with it to go home and pre-order. I'm going to another event next week that will be heavy on Windows Phone 7, although attendance is spread across several more large companies this time so I suspect hands on will be even tougher to get.

That's cool, good to know that you liked it from the get go. This fits with what I always expected to happen, people will like it once they actually use it.

Is it wii fun where you pay $149 and have fun for the 1st hour like wii until it collects dust or fun enough to keep on playing

That's why you wait and see if there is going to be support for Kinect in year and more. If there are good games that are coming out, you buy. If not, then don't.

Things like the Wii, PS Move, and even Kinect will collect dust eventually. Not enough support or good games coming out all the time to be playing with them all the time.

This is where, from my very brief experience, Kinect shines as the dashboard navigation is amusing, it will be easy for devs to do some cool avatar stuff and unlike Wii-motes and Move I don't need more game controllers laying around collecting dust or needing a charge when I haven't used them for a few weeks. I don't expect to use it every day, but when I have people over it will be a new distraction and something besides Rock Band, which really goes to heck after a few margaritas. Like I said, I HATED the idea and you don't have to look very far back to find me showing great contempt for this whole idea, but once I tried it I had some fun and saw potential for a lot more fun. I don't think it will become the dominant form of control, but but it will be popular enough to get soe use and attract devs to release new games for it, at the very least i expect avatar based arcade games, and what ever is going to replace 1 vs 100, to make great use of it.

So guys just wanted to bump this to ask a question.. so I have no room between my bed and TV.. can I still use Kinect for like menus and voice activation?

You should be, voice for sure.

Kinect will sell more units than Wii at launch, says Greenberg

October 29th, 2010 @ 09:05

By Johnny Cullen

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg is confident Kinect will sell. The man thinks it’ll sell more then Wii did at its launch four years ago, after all.

“We haven’t given any projections beyond this holiday, but this will be the largest launch we’ve ever had as a business,” he said, speaking in a Eurogamer interview.

“We’ll definitely sell more sensors than the Wii sold when it launched or the Xbox 360 sold when it launched.”

Greenberg said back at TGS that the motion camera will sell 3 million units by the end of the year, with Kinect boss Kudo Tsunoda quoted as saying it’ll “blow away” sales of iPad.

Kinect launches next Thursday in the US. It releases here in the UK and Europe on November 10.

Kinect the “the centerpiece of our strategy,” says new Rare boss

October 29th, 2010 @ 11:12

By Johnny Cullen

New Rare boss Scott Henson has told Eurogamer that, while it won’t be working on games for it exclusively, Kinect is the studio’s “centerpiece” right now.

Henson, who was announced on Thursday night to become the new head of the UK based developer, said the tech is a “key part” of its future.

“We’re just starting to scratch the surface with how you interact with your body, how you become a part of that experience and how you use your voice to control things,” he said.

“Rare is going to continue to do what first-party does, which is innovate and push the boundaries of what that means. We’ve got lots and lots of years of innovation ahead of us.”

He added: “Yes, absolutely, Kinect will be a key part of the studio’s future. I’m not suggesting it’s going to be exclusive, but it will be the centrepiece of our strategy for sure, because there is a lot of opportunity there. It’s bold and bright.”

He also hinted at the studio poking even more at its back catalog with Kinect support. Kinect Conker, anyone?

“You can look at what we’re doing with Xbox Live Arcade and you can see how we’ve taken those classics and refreshed them and brought them to the service. We’ll continue to look at those kinds of opportunities.

“Don’t just think about packaged goods in terms of opportunities and Rare and how we bring those things to life.”

There’s more at the link above.

    • Here's how to watch Summer Game Fest 2026 and what to expect from the 2-hour showcase by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The June game showcase schedule is packed, and with the Sony event already behind us, it's time for the next major presentation to come in swinging. Later today, Geoff Keighley will be bringing the 2026 edition of Summer Game Fest live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. For anyone wanting to tune in online, the Summer Game Fest showcase livestream will be kicking off at 2 PM PT | 5 PM ET | 10 PM BST later today, June 5. The jam-packed show is slated to run for about two hours, with platforms like YouTube (4K at 60FPS), Twitch, Facebook, or X being available for catching it. Like in previous years, separate streams featuring American Sign Language and Descriptive Audio are available on YouTube as well. Keighley has only dropped a few teasers about what gaming fans can expect to see at the show. This includes a new look at Star Wars Zero Company from EA, a major announcement from Guild Wars developer ArenaNet, more Clutch gameplay, and some sort of Sega presence. As for fan expectations, there is hype building about a Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 reveal here, and we might see new details about announced games like Alien Isolation 2 as well. If you want even more games, keep in mind that right after the main kickoff event, the Day of the Devs showcase will begin its own festivities at 4 pm PT | 7 pm ET. This is focused entirely on upcoming indie games. Following this, the next major games showcase is slated to happen on June 7. Here, Microsoft is bringing the big guns with its Xbox Games Showcase and Gears of War E-Day Direct. Check out the full calendar for all of the June events over here.
    • AI is destroying jobs like nothing before
    • I think the car analogy is more this: Left hand drive, basic commands on the left side of the infotainment screen. Right hand drive, basic commands on the right side of the infotainment screen. Granted, you're not swapping between the two often so it's doesn't really work. But it's to do with the proximity of you (your mouse, or the driver) to the controls.
    • I mean, the old one was broken and so stupidly complex for many users, so I don't see that as a feasible option. A context menu needs to be simple to use, and for me the Windows 11 style actually worked really well for me, and many others. I used to have to scroll the damn context menu just to get to "file properties" in Windows 10. That was not a good experience, and I'm sure you'd agree. What they're trying to do is make it the best of both worlds, as clearly you'd prefer the Win10 style. I'm curious how they're going to do this.
