Mac OS Desktops- 3rd Q 2010

Recommended Posts

Just a couple of quick questions since I'm a new Mac user and I see lots of fancy stuff in your desktops:

- What IM program do you use that you see like sections on the top left corner of the desktop?

- What program do you use in the menu bar at the top that displays the stats of the system?

And finally...

- How do you change the dock to look like 2D (with like black background) as seen on some desktops?

Thanks in advance.

1.) A very configured version of Adium. Under Prefereces-->Appearance. You'll just have to play around till you get it right.

2.) Not Sure

3.) It's a very hidden setting that you need a program to access. Download Secrets. (It'll install in System Preferences.). Then, to access it...

Apple Menu (Top Left)-->System Preferences-->Secrets-->Dock-->Dock Appearances.

I figured yesterday night points 1 and 3. Made first one just by knowing it was adium and then messing with the different templates. Regaring point 3 I found a couple of commands that had to be put on the shell and bam, turned it into 2D, but thanks anyway.

Also I think the stats on the menubar are shown by using iStat Menu v2 or 3.

And one more question, what is the best site to download icon packs (besides Interface Lift or Deviantart) ? I really like some of the ones the above posters are using.

I saw this wallpaper in the regular desktop thread, I was looking for a new one anyway and liked it, so I swapped it out.

I need to get rid of that Logitch iTouch Server app icon though... Haha. But I use the App itself. :[ Or at least redesign it so it matches! So vain.

That looks like Elliot is tunneling through a VPN of some sort - that is if you are looking that the 9th one from the left, instead of 9th one from the right. :)

I was tunneling through an ipv6 broker for a while to see how well things worked on my end and my Mac did the same style icon with the ipv6 connection being tunneled.

Whats the 9th icon on your menubar? Seen that a couple of times and was wondering what it is.

Sorry for the late reply. :p Medfordite is right: 9th icon from the left is the VPN menu for OS X (I use it to connect to client networks). 9th icon from the right is Alarms.

I was successfully running iPC 10.5.6 updated to 10.5.8 without a hitch on my old Gigabyte G31 Motherboard until the unthinkable happened & my motherboard died on me. I Purchased an Asus P5QAM-VM motherboard & was distraught with the amount of trouble i had to go over to get OSX 10.5 running on it. In Addition updating to 10.5.8 made my installation unbootable. Yesterday after trying numerous tries i installed Retail Snow Leo via a boot Cd on my PC & the results are fantastic. Not only did i update everything, things are so much more smoother & snappier.

Vanilla installs are the way to go :)

    • I know I won't ever be using it to make my game. I'd rather pay humans.
    • Nah. For every indie dev that needs to create code for "stuff" or textures, it's a godsend enabler to possibly tackle a project that you may not otherwise. The end result and testing will tell the truth if everything works or doesn't, or a game is just mediocre slop, but now these tools are now there and it's the developer's duty to judge the outcome, and even more so for pro studios. And you gotta remember that they will be at an early stage.
    • whoosh my comment went over your head. Enjoy your notchless 3:2 OLED device
    • As a game dev, today was really depressing. They announced that Blueprints will be deprecated in UE6 to be fully replaced by their sh**ty Python-like Verse language... They also announced that 5.8 will be the last version of UE5 until UE6 comes out in MID 2029!!!! They have completely lost the plot.
