BoneyardBrew Member Posted July 6, 2010 Member Share Posted July 6, 2010 Hello, I have been having a problem with my video card fan spinning up to 100% For the first few seconds during boot and when I resume from sleep. I first experienced this problem when I upgraded my motherboard to an ASUS P5N-D. Since I've gotten this motherboard I've also upgraded my GeForce 9800 GT to an ATi Radeon HD 5850, so I know it is not the card itself that is causing this problem. I have done a lot of Googling but that hasn't turned up anything so I'm hoping someone here with a similar problem has found a fix. Thanks! Phenom II
Its not a fault, many cards do the same, mine too Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/917810-gpu-fan-100-during-boot-and-resume/#findComment-592867110 Share on other sites
Kondrath
I thought that was normal. Every single time I turn on my PC, at a random time during the boot sequence, the GPU fan will get really loud for about 3 seconds and then go back to normal. Been doing it since I built it a year ago... BoneyardBrew Member Posted July 6, 2010 Author Member Share Posted July 6, 2010 Its not a fault, many cards do the same, mine too Oh, I see. It's beginning to get on my nerves so I was hoping there would be a fix for it. You'd think a more recent and expensive motherboard wouldn't have this issue compared to the relatively inexpensive one I had before. :pinch: I thought that was normal. Every single time I turn on my PC, at a random time during the boot sequence, the GPU fan will get really loud for about 3 seconds and then go back to normal. Been doing it since I built it a year ago... It's seeming like it is very common and indeed normal. I'm not afraid that there is anything wrong, I just don't like that it gets so loud. :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/917810-gpu-fan-100-during-boot-and-resume/#findComment-592867128 Share on other sites

I'm glad you brought it up, though, 'cause I never knew for sure if it was normal or not for that to happen. the big dill
How long does the fan spin for at 100%? if its only briefly, then i presume its like that as a safety procedure so that when no drivers are controlling temperature the card will automatically spin at 100% to reduce any kind of risk. hope this helped Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/917810-gpu-fan-100-during-boot-and-resume/#findComment-592868046 Share on other sites

I read up on it and came across this same reason. I was just wondering why only certain motherboards seem to have this problem (newer ones it seems) and others don't. Thanks for the reply, it makes sense after looking at it this way. Chicane-UK Veteran Posted July 12, 2010 Veteran Share Posted July 12, 2010 My old Leadtek Winfast GeForce 8600GT used to do the same. Pretty annoying TBH but certainly not out of the ordinary as you can see from the other responses :( I guess the default / safe mode they've programmed in is at full speed and it's only once the driver loads and can monitor the temperature and regulate the fan speed does it bring it down. nub
Its normal for many computers. I've heard it explained as making sure the fan is spinning before lowering the speed. +shift. MVC Posted July 13, 2010 MVC Share Posted July 13, 2010 The fan runs at 100% until (as stated before) either the ATI or NVIDIA driver kicks in (usually half way through the loading screen on Windows 7) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/917810-gpu-fan-100-during-boot-and-resume/#findComment-592899374 Share on other sites
