AP: NY Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner Has Died

Recommended Posts

I just got an alert on my iPhone from AP that George Steinbrenner has died. The only thing so far that I can find online is that he's suffered a massive heart attack. Will post a link as soon as I find one.

Yankees' Steinbrenner dies at 80

Longtime New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning, his family confirmed in a statement.

"It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80," the family said in a statement.

The New York Daily News reported that Steinbrenner died around 6:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Tampa, Fla.

WABC-TV in New York reported that Steinbrenner, the Yankees' owner since 1973, suffered a massive heart attack.

Steinbrenner, who celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4, was taken to a Tampa hospital after emergency crews responded to his home Monday night.

Steinbrenner gave his sons, Hal and Hank, day-to-day control of the team in late 2007.

He told The Associated Press last week that he was "feeling good" after spending a couple hours in his office at the Yankees' spring training complex.

Under his ownership, the Yankees have won 11 AL pennants and seven World Series titles.

May he rest in peace

The Associated Press is reporting that a person close to George Steinbrenner says the Yankees owner died Tuesday morning.

Earlier, we were hearing reports coming out of Tampa, Florida that New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has suffered a massive heart attack. Reports were that Tampa Fire Rescue responded to a call at the Steinbrenner home and that someone was transported to a hospital.

Between him and Bob Sheppard both passing, it's been a rough few days in the Yankees universe.

R.I.P. I never liked the way he tried to buy championships, though.

I hate that sentiment. He took the profit he made and invested it back into the team. Other owners could do the same, but they want the money for themselves.

Typical NY fan.....

Was waiting for you to post, as you are easily one the biggest/realest Yankees fan on here.

This is definitely big news for Yankees fans for sure, love or hate the man, he was a master mind for sure, and is directly responsible for making the Yankees the Yankees. Gonna be interesting to see if his sons have the same business savvy that George did.

And I was upset about Bob Sheppard as well, he was also the voice of the Giants until 2005 and what I knew him more for being I have been to more Giants games in my life than Yankee games.

What should the guy have done? Not done whatever was within his means to win because other teams were going to be offended? Hate on baseball for not having a cap, but don't hate the guy for trying to win by getting the players he thought would do just that. Or maybe next time, your team should not play as hard so their opponents don't feel bad for losing. Steinbrenner operated well within the rules and did nothing wrong. Baseball should have a cap, yes, but that wasn't his problem.

Don't forget, MLB is forcing the Marlins to reinvest money they get from the luxury tax into the team.

As a Boston Red Sox fan, I completely agree with you. The man loved to win and he did it at any means necessary. I applaud him for that. It's not his fault that other teams don't want to spend. At the end of the day, small market or big market, winners make money.

    • TO be clear I am not running linux today, however I keep thinking about it. And I want to make sure there are minimal obstacles if I decide to make that switch in the coming months.
    • Yes, I actually glossed over the Linux part from the OP. You could always go for a 9070 XT and if you really want to play Ray Traced games in the future, GeForce Now is pretty damn good on Linux https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-native-geforce-now-app-for-linux-bridges-the-gaming-gap-hands-on/
    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
    • I really hope the author's health is ok. Squirreling away a official backup of this software. Looks like the internet archive already cached a copy as well - https://web.archive.org/web/20...ldbit-soft.fi/software.html
