Droid X actually self-destructs if you try to mod it

I really don't see the major problem. You buy the product which is advertised to do y feature. It does y feature. You modify it to do x feature, and it breaks. It sounds awful, but I really don't think it's such a bad thing.

That's not what eFuse is. eFuse actively breaks the phone when you try to root it.

Example: I buy a stool that says "Max Weight 200 lbs." If I put 201 lbs on it and it breaks BECAUSE I put too much weight on it, I can't complain.

But, it's another situation if the stool says "Max Weight 200 lbs.", but it's like that because the company has deliberately cut weak points into the stool.

I guess I just don't get why. Motorola is a hardware vendor. People are already buying the phone, so what do they have to lose by letting people do with it what they like? An open-source platform like Android is going to be most popular with the modder/hacker community, and now they do something that will go directly against them... Bad call, IMHO. If I wanted a locked-down phone I can't do anything with and just wanted built-in features and a status symbol, I'd get an iPhone.

not impressed. I want to see a phone actually self destruct...like CD's and such do in Mission impossible. Put some chemical viles inside the phone, and if someone tampers with its software...mix the two together to instantly melt the phone or something. that would be cool.

Granted he doesn't flatout say there is an eFuse in the Droid X, he created a topic to contain all the encrypted bootloader AND eFuse talk, why would he make a thread to contain eFuse talk if the Droid X didn't have an eFuse?

Because its a rumor going around about the eFuse.

Granted the Droid X will be my first Cell, I honestly do not see why you would bother to modify it. It would be like buying a DVD player then modifying it to work as a Blu-Ray player as well. Sure, it can be done, but whats the point?

Then why are getting a Droid X/Android phone in the first place?

It's bad enough the 360 blows efuse's, and now Motorola? BLAH!. Too much blowing going on!

Good post to prove a point.

Do you hear anything about 360s blowing up and being uprepairable because of modifications?

I think that pretty much proves this is BS.

are you dumb? it's not going to burst into flames. It's just going to brick itself.

Virtual eFuses ftw. They're used in part of the xbox 360 "jtag" hack

On the 360, when you update the dash a fuse is blown (I think they are actually inside the CPU) this stops you being able to downgrade to and older dashboard.

I'm going to make a prediction. Motorola is going to release a bad update which will accidentally blow an efuse which will break everyone phone. Because of the efuse you won't be able to fix the phone with a software update. Instead all the phones will be bricked.

Hello? Where are the iPhone 4 critics to tell me once again I should buy a Droid X instead?

I would still get an X over a iPhone any day. Hell, I would go to one of those big bag phones before I go with an iPhone. Call me crazy, but I dont like *******ish companies telling me what I can and cannot do with something that I BUY and then producing crap as a product.

Jeez, chill, it's just a phone. No one is telling you to get an iPhone.

I just got my iPhone 4 a few days ago and I love it. No reception problems and runs smooth as butter. I got it because I really liked my iPhone 3G and Android hasn't won me over yet. Plus, there are some apps that are iPhone exclusive that I'd like to keep like Air Video Server.

But that's just my opinion. To each their own.

PS: Android phone manufactures tell their users what they can and can't do either, no? Isn't that why people root their phone? Just saying...

I am calm, just expressing my opinion. And no, most Android makers DO NOT tell you what you can and cannot do. Why they don't frown on people rooting their phone like Apple does. Why they allow a ton of devs to mod the phone's software and make changes to it. We can also overclock our phones. Motorola is the exception tho.

Well, I guess the users who want it to do more than advertised need to purchase another phone then. There are many good ones today to choose from.

Those who're happy with the given feature set can use this one.

This really is as simple as that.

True, but people may not buy the phone, not because they are want to root it, but because they don't feel convertible having an "Point of no return" fuse on their phone which can be triggered. Myself included.

Then why do you have to root in the first place?

It's just like jailbreak. The manufacturer puts limitations on the phone, but if you don't like the limitation, you can always void your warranty and root/jailbreak it.

**** me, Motorola can **** anything up.

I doubt HTC will ever do that, as the roms keep customers off their back.

I also can't see Apple doing that as they would lose sales...although they do keep fixing the exploits to be seen 'fighting piracy'.

    • Very fitting name since AI users have air where there brains should be.
    • Yes, it was amusing at the time because even then dbrand was well known for stealing the designs of products from other companies. That’s what they do.
    • Didn’t Dbrand once complain that Casetify was ripping off their designs a well? seems pretty bad of them to try and get around Valve’s copyright this way with that in mind.
    • Dbrand thought they could get away with this Steam Machine case, Valve disagreed by David Uzondu Image via Dbrand Dbrand has cancelled its highly anticipated Companion Cube enclosure for the Valve Steam Machine, which it teased back in November of last year with a concept render and sign-up page, because it did not ask Valve for permission first before manufacturing the case. According to Dbrand, it took the "backwards approach" of building the product first before asking for permission from the copyright holder. Seven months of work went into the project, requiring over a thousand engineering hours from the design team. Workers developed forty-four sets of injection molding tools, making a unique mold for each sub-component of the crate. When the Companion Cube went live on Monday last week, it, according to Dbrand, quickly became the second-fastest-selling product in the company's fifteen-year history, racking up orders for hundreds of thousands of units. Customers eagerly bought the $129.95 deluxe edition or the bare-bones $99.95 version, which the manufacturer cheekily branded as the "Poverty Cube". It was around this time that the legal eagles at Valve descended on the accessory maker with a formal demand. The developer pointed out that the iconic block design remains protected intellectual property from the game Portal, so unlicensed sales had to stop. Dbrand said that all its pleas to salvage the project with the Valve team, including proposals to run a properly licensed release under official terms "with their blessing", fell on deaf ears, so it had no choice but to obey and remove every trace of the product from the internet. If you bought the enclosure, the company said that banks will process your refund by the end of this week, but if it still hasn't arrived in your account by then, you should not hesitate to contact support. The Steam Machine itself is a high-performance console that Valve designed directly to bring PC gaming into the living room. It was announced on 12th November 2025 (the same day Dbrand announced the Cube) and runs on the Linux-based SteamOS, the same OS that powers the Steam Deck. As for the price, due to the shortage of memory and storage chips, the hardware cost landed much higher than people were expecting, starting at $1,049 for the 512 model (without a controller) or $1,128 with the new gamepad. The premium 2 TB model pushes those prices even higher, selling at $1,349 for the standalone console and hitting $1,428 if you want the bundle.
