Native vs. Mixed Mode

In Windows? 2000, domains can operate in two different modes:

Mixed Mode.> Windows NT? 4.0 domain controllers may be present in this environment. This is the default mode when a domain is created. Clients and member servers may be still running previous versions of Windows NT, Windows 98, or Windows 95.Native Mode.b> All domain controllers must be running a Windows 2000 Server. Clients and member servers may still be running Windows NT 4.0. Clients and member servers may still be running previous versions of Windows NT, Windows 98, or Windows 95.

A domain must be in native mode to use the following Windows 2000 group features:Universal security groups.b> Universal groups are a new type of group that can be created and used in any domain in the forest.

Nesting security groups.

Conversion of groups.

Mixed mode supports all types of distribution groups (including Universal) and nesting of distribution groups. Mixed mode should only be used to support Windows NT 4.0 domain controllers during the migration process. A domain tree or forest can contain both mixed-mode and native-mode domains.

Before creating or converting groups that require native mode, your application should verify the operation mode of the domain.

There are now a number of modes:

Windows 2000 Mixed: a Windows 2000 AD domain that supports Windows 2000, Windows 2003 and Windows NT 4 Domain Controllers.

Windows 2000 Native: a Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 AD domain that supports Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 domain controllers only.

Windows 2003 Native: a Windows 2003 AD domain that supports Windows Server 2003 DCs only.

so If I go into my Windows 2003 server (which is running as a DC along with 2 Windows 2000 domain controllers in Windows 2000 Mixed mode) and switch to Native mode, what native mode am I switching to then ????

Win2K Native mode or Win2003 native mode ????

Thank you

You will be running Native Win 2003 as you have made the switch on 2003 Server.

You will be prompted to choose the 2000 and 2003 mode, or just 2003 as Agenta mentioned. There is no single "native" mode like there was in 2000, in the 2003 servers.

To see this for yourself:

1) Launch "Active Directory Domains and Trusts" from the admin tools on the 2k3 server, or launch mmc.exe and add it as a snap in.

2) Right click on your domain and choose "Raise Domain Functional Level"

3) A window will appear that will present you with your available options.

Note, if you're running a 2000 domain and have a 2k3 server on it; but not functioning as a domain controller, you can still launch mmc.exe, add the snapin, and perform this operation on your existing 2000 domain just to see what the UI looks like.

There's also a help menu in that dialogue that will give you a good idea of the differences and benefits of the various levels.
