pre-employment fitness tests?

Recommended Posts

im my experience they give the tests and do the checks before the job offer happens. but then again the way the economy is in the US i think these companies make things up as they go along.

I agree with you.

Unless the job is a physically demanding possition, such as a lot of running or something, wouldnt this be deemed as disrimination? I mean, if you apply for a possition as a computer programmer for example but are very unfit, then how dies it effect the standard of your work?

... im not sure what the fitness test involves. .....

I think that is the problem there. Are you sure it is a overall physical fitness test and not a fitness to work test? I.E a test that you can actually do the job you are being hired to do. So you may just have to perform the tasks you will be required to do.

Did they ask you to wear sports clothing? That would be an indicator. Couldn't have you turning up in heavy boots and then say to you "5k on the treadmill now!"

yes i have to wear sports clothing and it's going to be a treadmill/stress test. i already passed the drug & background but they are requiring a 2nd drug test now, i have no idea whats going on? my test is friday but im not holding my breath on this gig. i actually have another interview with a different company tomorrow lined up in case. i did tell them it would of been nice to tell me from the get go that this was a conditional job offer.

A 2nd Drug Test!! Yeah, I think that place is making it up as they go along, that's crazy. I actually hope you get that other job, this one just doesn't sound right

yeah my gut is telling me there might be issues with the company. that's the last thing i need right now. ive NEVER heard of a stress test for a maintenance tech position.

"they give the tests and do the checks before the job offer happens"

This not always the case, and waiting until you have accepted the offer saves the company money. Why should the company fork over the costs of doing the tests, just so you can say nah I found something better, etc.

So you look good on paper, you do good on interview - whoever you going to work for says yeah lets hire him.. Why should they pay for tests until your ok with the actual offer and salary, etc.

I would see it as a cost cutting measure on the companies part - nothing more. Especially a large company that does a lot of hiring, maybe they have a large turnover rate for whatever reason? If you forking over the costs of tests before the candidate accepts -- they could be throwing money away.

If they wait til after, and then you fail - atleast it was money well spent. If they spend the money before, and you turn it down - then it was money down the drain.

i see where your coming from and yes ive heard this company has a huge turn over rate. actually ive been feeling pretty ill today and tonight so im going to reschedule the fitness test for next week. i don't need any negative results and they told me if im ill that the test cannot be performed. plus i do have another job offer that came through today that im considering.

so i went this morning and they had me take the test even though i was a bit ill. surprisingly i passed and i start on monday. now the hard part comes...me getting used to going to bed early and getting up early! :pinch:

btw the test was pointless IMO but i did have a hot asain chick perform the exam!

we can thank obama for this. they could deny me solely based on me smoking. that's why im worried ya know. and they wonder why soo many people are on unemployment for years. i know ill pass the background & drug part but the fitness test i have no clue.

Why can we thank Obama for that? my company held smokers lower (since we deal with health insurance, we took that as a big no no) and I know other companies that did stuff like that back in 2004, so that'd be under Bush, so once again, how's this Obama's fault?

You said you wanted it to happen. It's because of people like you that we had Steve Martin being Inspector Clouseau in the shameful and disgusting remake of The Pink Panther. :x Have you no shame!

jesus man...relax!

Why can we thank Obama for that?

maybe because he is the worst president in history next to the bushes. your lucky if a company even offers heath care or dental anymore. everybody is out to save a buck! the wage im going to make at this job is lower than i made 11 years ago. that's sad.

I must be living on the wrong side of the country because up here almost every employer offers it, heck we write most of their benefit plans here... We don't see any trend in our area of companies getting rid of health plans

People just wanna bitch and complain about Obama. That's really all there is to it.

try to find a job in michigan that offers decent medical if any + a good wage above 10 an hour. oh that's right...you cannot because people with bachelors degrees are even having to apply at burger king.

i lucked out becuase my new company does offer full medical + dental but the wage sorta sucks. so there is a trade off. but at least it's a job for now!

jesus man...relax!

I'm only joking/ranting. Although I do have a theory that there is some Hollywood exec that is specifically out to ruin everything from my childhood. If I thought that any of these remakes were an honest improvement or a different take on a classic tale/universe then I'd be OK, but I think that it's all done to use an existing name to shift a load of lunch boxes.

  • 2 weeks later...

so im on my 2nd week of work and i love the job soo far. one horrid thing i have found out is how high they charge for health insurance. for me, my wife & kids they want $711 a month... what a freaking joke. that's over $100 more than i pay for rent. so much for that universal health care.

    • For a guy who claims to hate Farage and the ignorant, gullible, rightwing racist skinheads sponsored by Putin that his lies represent, you sure are quoting them time and time and time again, mate. I guess you're conveniently ignoring the fact that your country and commonwealth just happened to work much better when it was still part of the E.U.? Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.
    • Do you live in the U.K? Do any of the people here that are against the UK leaving the E.U, live in the U.K? If not then why are you bothered? If you do live here then it is a different thing . Brexit was a good idea, should have done it years before, it was done badly, but the idea was good. You are saying the same thing as remainers do, oh we did what Putin wanted, we listened to the lies and Farage. I hate Farage and never believed most of what he said, certainly did not believe the £350m a week for the NHS. But we did pay a lot of money to the E.U and yes some of it came back, but what is the point of paying it out for only some of it to come back? Get out of the E.U, no money to them and in theory we can use the money to do things in the country. I said in theory, but our governments are a total and complete waste of space. No matter what colour rosette they wear. You and others say it was a mistake and yet the two main parties in the U.K are not looking at rejoining the EU, I wonder why that is? I was not tricked by anyone. Makes no odds now, we are out and have been for 10 years, what we need is a decent government to run the country. All they do is shout at each other like a load of kids and seems to do nothing and make this country more into a police and nanny state. Getting more like China all the time.

    • Yeah... The root of my comment, ostensibly, is how to spin the story via the actual technical merits of the solution! * Decentralized (aka federated) solution with built-in encrypted ephemeral message transport, * Transport via Relays (intermediary servers) with no message archival, * Second configurable pathway are actual email servers (if DNS records are programmed accordingly) via IMAP protocols carriage, * "Chat-over-Email" is the design pattern adopted; it can either leverage full-blown Email Server (must use the INBOX folder) to exchange all received messages/edits/reactions (so be weary of notifications overloads) [best practice is creating a separate email acct used explicitly for federated chat purposes!] or leverage its built-in Relay Server mechanism which actually resides on-device (by default but can be configured otherwise), * By virtue of be a decentralized/federated model, all other intermediary servers who may pass-along messages (while the recipient's final relay/device is inaccessible) cannot snoop on the messages due to the encrypted nature of contents. The intermediaries may, however, analyze the metadata due to the simple fact that routing mechanisms require hints for relay destinations. Unfortunately, whomever is posting about DeltaChat across socials are misleading with "zero metadata" claims -- especially when the Relays (according to their own technical documents) mandate the addition of chat-version metadata and other decorations in order to actually transport any message. -- Based on this summary, I'd prefer if they'd better dual-path message transport (email server add-in, federated relay engine) rather than patch-on email protocols to existing federated social media frameworks. They're frankensteining something rather than extending widely-deployed technology stacks.
