An Update to the Ubuntu Light Themes

ambiance-maverick-preview_update.png

One of our key objectives when we started conceptualising the new themes was their ability to be immediately recognisable as Ubuntu, even if represented as a small screenshot. As easily recognised as when it used to be brown ? but not that brown? the incarnation that we initially launched was a bold new statement: a little unrefined maybe, but a good starting block on which to build.

And so the evolution continues?

A lot has been learnt in the last year and we are now in the process of making constant tweaks and improvements. I have been working extensively with Andrea Cimitan (creator of the Murrine theme engine) over the last couple of months to improve and accelerate our workflow. It?s been fantastic having his extensive knowledge, ideas and fresh perspective to fine tune across the board.

There are far too many refinements to mention, but below are a few of note:

Removal of the beige/brown/cream tints to windows and buttons ? it was rather intense and the buttons in particular felt too dark and claustrophobic. The whole interface has a lighter, refined and more precise approach.

They new a new font, one that doesn't span the entire titlebar... Is it that hard to design a UI compared to a website? Their website looks awesome as hell, but the OS they represent, lmao the complete opposite. I mean, they are working on it, but it needs a new font, and some hard effort in 3D designs. Not true 3D, 3D UI objects, that's all. Like the progress bars suck, just a couple colors put together and an animation. The colors on the windows must not know what today's date is, this OS could stand up to Windows XP, nothing else. The yellowish-brown look that Windows XP's windows had is what this looks like. In Windows Vista, it's now white or a tinted blue, so much better and keeping up with the times. I don't want my OS looking like my old yellowish-brown refrigerator.

Take everything above as good suggestion, not trying to put Ubuntu down, trying to point out the flaws! ;)

A huge step in the right direction but please overhaul the the Windows Decorations. "New Wave" is the closest thing to being unique in a good way (and even that's not perfect) but it fits the "Murrine / Ubuntu light" better than the pictured one.

That is a new font. One made by the design team specifically for Ubuntu.
