No voice control for Kinect launch

Edit - Microsoft denies Kinect voice control launch omission

Microsoft has confirmed to MCV that Kinect will not boast any voice control functionality at launch.

Speaking at Gamescom, marketing manager for Xbox Live EMEA Robin Burrowes stated that "we will be announcing when voice control will be turned on in due course".

Earlier demonstrations of Kinect had depicted users switching between various functions and selecting media on Xbox 360 by simply telling the console what it was they wanted it to do. The peripheral will also be able to recognise the voices of individual users.

Earlier this month the platform holder touted such functionality as one of the key reasons why hardcore gamers will be keen to be amongst the first owners of the device.

Kinect will launch in the UK on November 10th.

UPDATE: MCV can also confirm that chat software Video Kinect will also not feature as part of the accessory's launch. Like voice control, that will also arrive at a later date.

Makes you wonder if the demos at E3 were "staged" as well, or just early testing. For early testing it did run in a way that looked complete though!

Don't know why they don't just push back the launch, guess it's due to Christmas.

WTF is the deal with MS and Kinect marketing, one minute it does something, next minute it doesn't and vice-versa laugh.gif

I guessed who posted this by just looking at the title :p

And you can also guess who'll QQ about it wub.gif

Wow this is bad. I guess the video kinect part was already known - they said it in E3 presentation that it will be turned on later in 2011.

Dude, drop it. The thing works. Demo can be made using pre-release software. We get it that you like Move more but that doesn't mean everything Kinect has to be "staged".

Can you edit the title/OP AB so we don't have more people skipping the good news.

damn :p I had the reply window open for a while and first thing after posting I saw was your update. I guess AWBrian is still buying then. tongue.gif

Eh. I was never concerned with talking at my console so this isn't a dealbreaker for me :p

Its still an extremely impressive piece of tech no matter how you put it.

/edit - you guys do realize that the market this is aimed for isn't exactly concerned with the tech behind it, right? Its more the novelty of it. That's why the Wii sold so damn well. The novelty of it is being able to play without a controller and that's not lost here.

"we will be announcing when voice control will be turned on in due course".

That alone makes it sound like a poor decision on Microsoft's part. "Hey guys, we've put the function in there, we're just not going to turn it on at the beginning."

That said, the idea of talking to a TV screen seems a little daft to me. Heck, I've never used the voice control function on any device that has supported it.

Oh, jeez. Maybe this should be closed since it's incorrect and people aren't even bothering to read...

    • Any decent ITSM will A) have a web form that allows a user to raise a ticket, if you're writing an email you can write a ticket. B) Monitor a mailbox and auto-generate tickets based on inbound mails for those users that really can't get their heads around the concept that if you have an issue you go to support.mycompany.com and fill in the box. From your description you're having users email the desk, and then having a human read each one and manually raise a ticket on behalf of the user.

    • Fixing things? Have you ever tried linux? Everything works out of the box nowadays in most common hardware. This includes Wifi and Bluetooth. If anything, if they return back to windows is because they haven't found an equivalent program which often used on windows.
