Can I use Automator to work with third-party applications?

Recommended Posts

Right now in Illustrator I'm working with a template that I use to generate a large series of images, well over 200. Basically, what I have to do is change text in the template, resize it and then export it to a certain size and format. It's easy work, but it's very repetitive. Is there any way at all I can get Automator to basically do all the resizing and file exporting for me after I make the necessary changes to the text (and then convert it outlines?) Or does Automator simply not work like that?

I just found out about the "Actions" options in Illustrator, so that solves my problem. Although I'm still curious if Automater can work with other third-party programs.

It can work, but it requires "glue" to hook the Applications functions up to Automater functions (ideally the application developer would provide that)

If it doesn't, but does provide an AppleScript interface, there's an AppleScript action you can use to run arbitrary commands.
