ok.. I have more computers than I do monitors, keyboard, etc.. and I was wandering, is there a way for me to set up a computer on my network then.. install a complete remote desktop app, that might let me emulate that I was right in front of that screen, see processes, run programs, etc.

Also I was planning an FTP server to transfer files, but I am still going to need visual and keyboard/mouse control.. I would hate to have to hook up a keyboard, mouse and monitor everytime I wanted to work on the server..

Terminal Services or Remote Desktop, Take your pick.

VNC, RADMIN etc...

Thats what I'm doing right now...My computer (the good one) is the one that has the monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and all that hooked up to...but its networked to my grandfather's computer (just the computer itself, no periphrials, not even a monitor right now) which is the computer i acess the internet through...

So i remote desktop to my grandfather's (he never uses it anyways) and do MSN and neowin on this one and play games on mine at the same time :D all with one keyboard, mouse, monitor, sound system, and all that

WinXP has it built in (Remote Desktop connection, under accessories > communication

Hey man..

Symantec PCanywhere 11

Great product.. I use it to manage multiple computers across the country and world and local network.

Alot of tech dept here use this to manage their networks from a remote location.

Remote desktop included in XP/2000 is nice but PCanywhere puts the icing on the cake.

and

NO I do NOT work for Symantec.. I just believe in this software :)

if you wanna spend 150.00 for remote software.

Hmm. after I get my new computer up and operational tomorrow (or wedesday) i'm going to test out remote desktop, if it doesn't suit my needs, i will test out some of these other products (except the symantec one since I'm not paying $150 :p )..

Thanks for the suggestions!

so what sets PCanywhere apart from remote desktop? or vnc?

Sounds to me like you just need a KVM if the computers are close enough to each other. Its a little piece of hardware that allows you to use one keyboard, one mouse and one monitor with 2 or 4 computers. Here's the description of one (of many) I've found:

Features:

Use one keyboard, monitor and mouse to control between two and four PCs.

Microsoft Intellimouse, Logitech FirstMouse+, MouseMan+, and other special mice are supported.

PS/2 Mouse emulation for error-free boot-up.

Connected PC?s can be added or removed from the setup without powering off the KVM switch.

Plug-n-Play monitor support.

MiniView? switches support video resolutions up to 1920 x 1440.

No software required.

Built in AutoScan mode.

Keyboard lock states are stored for each PC.

LEDs allow for easy status monitoring.

IOGEAR?s MiniView? products use standard connectors to connect PCs.

3 Year Limited Warranty.

we used to have a KVM switch at a place i used to work at, they were great and very easy to setup and use. The only problem was that they don't work very well with moving items e.g. DVD's/Games etc.... :( but I guess neither VNC or RDP would either.

There are "other" ways of getting PCanywhere ;) but I am glad your an honest consumer.

lol, true, but i've had my fair share of obtaining software "other ways"... I would do it if I thought it was the only way, but since there are free alternatives, I would prefer to stay legit.
