Windows Update Stops my Computer From Shuting Down

Recommended Posts

Theres been a small problem with my computer thats been annoying the crap out of me for the past few weeks: My computer never manages to shutdown by itself!

Whenever I use the shutdown option in the start menu, I proceed to the shuting down screen as usual, but Windows Updates trys to install something to my computer. Problem is that it trys to do so for hours on end (like literally over 12 hours sometimes). At that point I just decide to manually shut my computer down. Apart from this, my computers been working just fine.

Has anyone had this problem before? Please post a solution if you have it. I'd like my computer to close itself once again like it used to.

(I am using Windows Vista.)

Could be Windows XP, Vista, or 7. Please be more specific for a faster response.

If Windows 7 (and presuming Windows Vista), look in control panel and click the drop down arrow and click all programs

Open Administrative tool and Event Viewier

Under Windows Logs and System look for whats causing the error and it gives a code.

Uhh... I used the Event Viewer and it pointed out this:

"Windows Servicing is setting package KB982214(Security Update) state to Staging(Staging)"

This event seemed to have happened during my last shutdown attempt. I guess this is what is causing the problem, but how do I go about stopping the update from doing that again?

Edit: This event happenned just before the event above this edit:

"Windows Servicing identified that package KB982214(Security Update) is not applicable for this system"

Also you may want to stop the windows update service and then delete the contents of the C:\windows\softwaredistrubution folder. Then turn windows update back on and check for updates. Sometimes if an update gets corrupted it makes windows re-download it and sometimes fixing the problem.
