I'm having my iPhone 3GS repaired and I need to get my head round something. The uppermost layer of the phone isn't the LCD is it, it's a glass screen, isn't it? The LCD is below the screen and the touch sensitizer. I'm having someone he knows what their doing repair it but he's asking me what parts to order.

Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question but it isn't meant to be, I've never opened up a phone in my life.

Edit: Also on the front of the phone what's the black plating that goes round the edge of the screen officially called?

If the glass is cracked, but the LCD itself looks fine still, then you need the glass+digitizer. I've seen them as cheap as $5 on Amazon with good ratings.

Also, it's a very easy job to do if you know what you're doing, so don't let whoever is doing it charge you too much. I'd do it for friends for $20.

But I need the black plating round the front to. Anyway $5? They must fake or low quality or something.

The black paint is on it. That's not a separate part, they show as glass+digitizer. The black part is a given. Yes, they aren't OEM Apple products, but good luck finding one online that is. They work just the same. I've done it on mine before, granted not the $5 one, but I think I got one for $15 at the most. The only way you could even tell it wasn't real was in bright light you could VERY VERY faintly see lines on the digitizer if you held it at the right angle. Nothing you'd ever notice unless you looked for it though.

To be fair though, I bought a replacement LCD on Amazon. I bought this replacement glass+digitizer: http://www.directfix...tegory_Code=DIG

Hmm... odd, the one I linked to says OEM Original, but I'm fairly certain it's not the same as the ones Apple uses because of those faint lines I mentioned, which nearly everyone sees when they replace their glass from somewhere online. Either way, like I said, it worked absolutely perfectly. No problems at all.

Oh right didn't know that about it being one piece, anyway thanks I'll keep your advice in mind.

    • Nice rant! Expletive after expletive after expletive. Poor petal, I've touched a nerve. Would you like a tissue to wipe those tears away. Btw, nice one calling Neowin trash. Why would you stick around when you disrespect this site and the people behind it? Just go away if you feel that way.
