sata problem

Recommended Posts

Hi,

i'm trying to install XP on an HP G60-214ea with an AMD cpu and nvidia chipset.

the problem is that win xp doesn't see the sata hdd, and after installing it's listing the built in card reader as C drive and the hdd as E drive.

has anyone any ideas on how to stop this and get the install to list the HDD as C.

thanks in advance

Thanks Peter,

already thought of that but its a laptop and as far as i can tell from the service manual the reader is mounted on the mobo.

its puzzling because XP sees the hdd,

upon install i put an 80gb partition on it for XP all goes well but after installation XP sees the reader as C drive and the hdd as E drive.

ive done this twice and same result

Hi Guys,

yes it originally came with vista but it was... well, vista, and he wanted XP back.

and yes, interceptorx, it does seem to be something to do with the sata hdd and XP not having native sata support.

ive checked a few forums including the HP one, the general consensus is that with the amd cpu and nvidia chipset i should not need sata drivers, although i obviously do or else i wouldnt be having this trouble.

thing is i cant find a sata driver anywhere, and theres no options in the bios to select the hdd or disable the card reader.

ive even tried changing the dos device name in the reghistry, result... hangs on the blue XP welcome screen and i have to reinstall. done this twice to make sure, same thing happened.

its driving me daft

Yes Peter, thats correct.

i can install XP,

when installing it sees the HDD at the top of the screen and lists the card reader (i presume) second as unknown device. i then create an 80 gb partition for XP and let it install. all goes well but on completion it sees the reader as C drive and the partition as E drive.

reading forums the posts tell me that as its an AMD cpu and NVIDIA chipset i should not need a sata driver. but somethings obviously awry due to the drive listing problem i'm having.

ive got nlite but dont know how to find the driver or whatever it is i need to slipstream it into XP.

this is like a steering wheel down my trousers....its driving me nuts :-)

  • 2 months later...

the problem with WINXP is it sees IDE HDDs first inline and then SATA HDDs hence why the card reader is getting Drive letters placed before the SATA HDD?

in the BIOS can you find anything to do with BOOT order and or drive list order if yes then set the SATA HDD to be 1st drive in the list ?

as you can't disable the card reader in the bios you may also need to do this...

go to Start || right click my computer || click Manage

Under STORAGE find Disk Management

now right click on the (card reader) C:\ and click on Change Drive Letter and Paths...

give it a letter other than C, D, E, F, G just click ok/Yes or continue to any prompts you get ?

do the same for all of the other card reader drive letters?

now do the same to the HDD but give it C as it's drive letter?

If the above fails go to Device manager and remove the card reader (dont' reboot) then do the above with the SATA HDD drive letter?

the only way to do it is disabling card reader in bios, then installing windows then reactivate card reader !

    • I'm not aware of this issue, but to help the other guys.  What version of Android are you using? Did you try a different browser? To see if Edge is the issue here.
    • I agree when are you going to read this (really poor BTW) article? Here is a better article so you actually know what is going on and answers questions you had in other comments --> https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/05/speed-boosting-low-latency-profile-is-one-of-the-improvements-coming-to-windows-11/ It is unclear if one will be able to disable the new profile at this point but I am not seeing any reason why one would.
    • I disagree; they come off very "bitchy" and "whiny". Make a great product and combine that with a great price (free) and people will come over to your side. Or build it and they will come as they say. Constantly trying to get attention by complaining all the time, will turn people off to your product.
