Linux distro that looks like OSX?

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to search for a linux distro that looks like Mac OS X right out of the box or at least just with the mac look alike dock.

I know you can install themes and stuff and a dock to make linux look like OSX but im kinda a linux newb and I dont know how to do all that stuff and ive read up on it and kinda seems like it takes alot of work.

PS: If I install Linux on a external USB hard drive can I plug it in any PC and will it detect it and boot up with Linux?

As far as I know, there is no such thing right out of the box. (I'm sure Apple would have some issues with that.) There are literally a bajillion how-to's out there though, just find one for your distro and do it step by step. It's not hard.. Ubuntu for example has a ton of how-to's on this exact thing. (And to be honest, if you're having problems following it, you probably shouldn't be considering Linux.. if you're new to it, there's going to be a lot of following directions until you get the hang of it.) I do recall hearing about a Mac4Lin project, but I've no experience with it, never had the desire to emulate a Mac. (I can't be the only one that thinks it's ugly lol)

As far as the USB drive goes, yes.

Two options. The first (and easier) one is that your BIOS is reasonably up to date, and it supports booting off of USB devices. In that case, just bring up your boot menu (check the manual, it varies from board to board), select the USB drive and off you go.

The harder option will require using a boot loader. You can set up GRUB to boot off of a USB device, but this can potentially be a little tricky to configure, and will vary depending on your distribution.

If your motherboard supports it, definitely would recommend the first option, much much simpler and doesn't involve making changes to your Windows boot device.

For MAC lookalike, try this. It works and its free.

Hope it helps.

That literally looks nothing like OSX.

OP, there's nothing you'll find that will be anything close to what OSX is like. In the past I've used Mac4Lin on Ubuntu, which is the next best thing I guess, but not quite OSX.

I know you're searching for something that looks like OS X, but why not Hackintosh your PC?
