Fan always at 100%, I'm stumped.

Recommended Posts

Just got a new setup I built AMD Phenom II X6

Stress tested and everything is great, Prime95 going for hours and the proc has never gone higher than 44C. (25C idle)

Whenever I turn the computer on the CPU fan is always running at 100% even when it's idle at 25C.

I just installed Windows 7 and BIOS has default settings, Cool 'n Quiet is on auto.

i'm assuming your talking about the cpu fan?

you might check in the bios to see if there are variable settings for the cpu fan.

personally i was not aware if it was possible to manually change fan speed, and unsure of if the amd proprietery fan stuff lowered the rpms based on temps or not. so any info on this subject would be interesting to me. although i though cool and quiet was what managed cpu fan speed on amd systems.

ALWAYS. As said in the title :)

Oh okay, that's what I figured, but the "when I turn the computer on" part made me re-think.

Hmm, I dunno' what I'm talking about, but is it possible you've got the CPU fan plugged into the wrong slot? Or through the PSU? I don't even know if that's possible or not, but just making sure :p

Try a BIOS update?

I did just say that the setup is new I just got the parts from new egg yesterday. The heatsink has virtually no dust whatsoever. The motherboard has a port labeled CPU_FAN and that's where I have the CPU fan plugged in. I already upgraded my BIOS to the latest version and it still does the same thing.

Well, ya' got me... Defective MOBO or CPU fan?

I found out what it is, who would've thought they'd have dumb default motherboard settings?

The default motherboard setting is for no CPU Q-Fan Function. (I'm assuming Q stands for "Quiet" perhaps?) I didn't see this before but there's so many options in the BIOS I might have overlooked it.

I changed this setting to PWM Fan and it's very silent now. Thanks for the other suggestions though, might help the next time it's not my motherboard. :)

    • Google Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer is leaving for OpenAI by Pradeep Viswanathan Noam Shazeer is best known as one of the co-authors of the 2017 “Attention Is All You Need” paper, which introduced the Transformer architecture that now powers most large language models. He also worked on several major Google AI projects, including LaMDA, before leaving the company in 2021 to co-found Character.AI. He also authored the Sparsely-gated Mixture of Experts (2016) paper, which is popular among the AI community. After falling behind OpenAI and Anthropic a couple of years ago, Google brought Shazeer back in 2024 as part of a major deal with Character.AI. Through this deal, along with Noam, several other researchers returned to Google DeepMind. More recently, he was a vice president of engineering at Google and a technical co-lead for Gemini. Today, Noam Shazeer announced on X that he is leaving Google and joining OpenAI. In his post, Shazeer said it was a difficult decision to move on, adding that he was proud of the Google team and what it had built together. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman welcomed the move with a post of his own, saying Shazeer was one of the people he had most wanted to work with since OpenAI’s early days. Google has made strong progress with Gemini over the past year, closing the gap with OpenAI in several areas. But losing Noam Shazeer is a major talent setback for them, especially after bringing him back less than two years ago by spending a fortune. For OpenAI, the hire adds one of the industry’s most experienced language model researchers to a team that is already pushing ahead with ChatGPT, Codex, and its next generation of frontier models.
