Convince me to get a PS3! :-)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm an avid Xbox player and have had one for several years. Many years ago, we had a PS1 and then later on after that, a PS2. I adored both of them, but decided that getting the original Xbox would be better so I could play Halo and have Xbox Live. Now, however, I'm getting utterly sick of all the bull**** around XBL. Accounts are still getting hacked, charging up-the-ass for new content, and paying for the service in the first place. Problem is, I'm a fan-boy and haven't even considered the PS3 up until recently, so I have no clue what the PS3 has to offer. The games I mainly play right now are Call of Duty, Gears of War, and Guitar Hero/Rock Band. I also have a passion with Halo, and am looking forward to Reach. My interests have been perked though, and I'd like to hear your guys' reasons for getting a PS3 and any good games, features, etc. that are buying points of the game.(Do they have any new Ratchet and Clank or Spyro games?)

Thanks guys!

Pros: Great Multimedia Features, Blu-Ray ready device, Playstation Store's PS1 Classics library, most of which are $10USD, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Wireless controller with BUILT IN Lithium Ion battery, charges off of the unit, Web Browser, GREAT graphics capabilities, Uncharted 2 Amongst Thieves, free multiplayer.

Cons: Sometimes slow network, 160GB HD for $299 rather than 250GB for $299, Sometimes confusing Playstation Store Interface, Harder to dev for, meaning fewer games than Xbox 360 although dev companies are making an effort to dev for both consoles. Incompatible with PS2 games, meaning your PS2 library won't work on the PS3.

Hmm.. those are definitely interesting p/c to say the least. The only con that really gets me is the no-PS2 game compatibility- although I don't have any PS2 games to worry about that for.

A lot of the pros sound really good- especially the Blu-Ray player and web browser(how good is it? full-surfing capabilities?)

Other questions: How good is Uncharted 2? How do Call of Duty games play on here?

Thanks for the response! :-)

EDIT:

More questions; is Fallout made for this game or just Xbox? How about Bioschock?

Web browser is fully featured, while not as powerful as a PC based web browser, it is Youtube compatible, and plays most flash videos just fine as it has native flash support.

Uncharted 2 I haven't played, while Call of Duty games run nicely on it, MW1, MW2, World At War, all run beautifully.

Yeah that sucks about the PS2 compat, but I went from PS1, to Gamecube, to Xbox 360, to PS3, so I didn't get hit too badly as I didn't have any PS2 games.

Fallout 3 and it's associated DLCs are on this console, as is Bioshock and Bioshock 2 and their respective DLCs, aswell.

psjailbreak. Thats a great reason at present :)

For titles:

little big planet

motorstorm

god of war II

metal gear solid 4

killzone 2

uncharted/uncharted 2

ratchet & clank

Heavenly sword

folklore

resistance

Gran Turismo

that about sums up what the PS3 has for solo hits. I know there are more- ones listed are good games for the most part. I find with the PS3 the physics seem more real - I have always found this with sony consoles, it could be their RISC code or the RSX engine.. I am unsure, but it seems to have better physics than the xbox 360.. likely just me.

PS3 is quite slow, but has gotten better. Their pricepoint is good, but the system continually loses features which is why the first feature is the most important - provided you don't want to use the free online service.

uncharted is awesome, as is final fantasy. it looks much better

Yeah the PSJailbreak is a big draw if you're willing to shell out the money for it, and swallow the fact that the company is being sued by Sony and will likely close, but the community has picked up on it and are working tirelessly to create alternatives, they've got one called PSGroove, however it's only Homebrew capable, as the backup manager is absent.

Don't forget Little Big Planet 2. :D

Glad that the Call of Duty games run well, that's a real bonus for me. As well as Fallout and Bioschock- both games I've wanted to play but never taken the chance to.

A lot of the games sound good, and most are ones I've read/heard about and wanted to try... so that's definitely a plus.

What exactly does psjailbreak do? I researched it and didn't come up with much.

You're welcome, I apologize if I couldn't be more help, I just picked this up myself, was going to rebuy an Xbox 360 Slim but they were sold out, bought this instead and I'm happy with it. Glad I got it, but my optimism is blind, this is the first time I went full HD with my console and TV and the picture quality blows me away, despite the fact that the 360 has the same capabilities.

No problem, it helps that you came from playing on the 360, since you know where I'm coming from.

Another question that just came up: Can you download music from an iPod onto it? With the Xbox 360, you could- but you could only play music that was from a CD- anything from iTunes wouldn't work.

err, openPSjailbreak? It runs on N900, Palm pre, avr dev boards (usb series), pic 18f2550 series, new B&D toasters. (not really the last one)

New stock of sony consoles will NOT work with this exploit - they are holding them back now to apply some fixes. This is why getting it working on the minimum will be all thats needed as there won't be many 'updates' to make work with newer units, so devices boasting 32-bit processors are just like a shelling out for a BMW when a chevette will do.

.

Not saying it couldn't be beneficial down the road, but if sony does what's rumored there won't be any way to update the code to work.

Also the PS3 slim can do bitstreaming of bluray audio, which is handy if you have a good surround sound system. It has built in wifi G and a large HDD too. Online gaming is free, can easily be hacked with possibly your cellphone. built in psu is very nice and the unit is QUIET! failure rate is low as well.. Also sony never locked saves or HDDs to the unit - so backing up to USB stick will work as well as swapping out with a 620GB slim drive (under 10mm thick) and throwing your divx/xvids on the unit they play without issue!

What exactly does psjailbreak do? I researched it and didn't come up with much.

PSjailbreak puts the retail unit into developer mode, so you can use developer features.. like installing pkg (which would be homebrews on PS3)

currently the only homebrew for it is backup manager, which allows you to insert game disc and copy its contents to the internal or an external drive to play at a later date - with any PS3 game disc in drive.

Other homebrew should surface shortly - like OtherOS with full RSX access capable of working on all PS3 units, PS1/PS2 game support, Xbox Media Center HD, some simple homebrew games and programs (like bingo, pong, FTP server, web server, file server, etc)

Yes. Sony is copying the NAND to the HDD, and encrypting the partition with a per unit RETAIL key - so the PS3 can only access the NAND (Which is basically the boot code for the PS3) when its in retail mode, rendering the PS3 unable to boot to dev mode. This still don't cover the exploit - just screws up how the exploit works. also likely to make them more $$ by smaller cheaper nand during manufacturing, and if a HDD dies the PS3 will be useless - so more repair $$$ for them as even 3rd line repair centers can't access dev mode any longer to do software repairs!!

-snip-

Cons: Sometimes slow network, 160GB HD for $299 rather than 250GB for $299 -snip-

I agree with what Azies said. However, with the PS3 unlike the XBOX360 you can upgrade the HDD with a standard 2.5" laptop drive.

I bought my PS3 brand new in 2006, I have the old school 20GB edition that they didn't make for very long. I recently upgraded my HDD to 320GB for $70. I recommend getting the PS3 with the smallest storage to save some cash, and if you find yourself running out of storage just buy a new HDD for it. Good luck.

a few saved games are locked, but most are not. saboteur is one that was locked, sucked since my launch model died and i had to restart when i got my new ps3. don't even mention ps3jailbreak, it's not a "feature" or even a remote reason to get a ps3 now. don't be that guy/girl.

my first step into the console world was a 360 (for halo 2 actually) and gears of war. ended up with some cash and grabbed a ps3 at a steal from best buy. after TWO 360's died i refuse to get another.

the ps3 does so much more than play games for me, the quiet, user upgradable hdd, and games are great, but streaming my entire video library from my pc is what really impresses me.

Hmm.. those are definitely interesting p/c to say the least. The only con that really gets me is the no-PS2 game compatibility- although I don't have any PS2 games to worry about that for.

If you have not played uncharted 2 you are missing something big in the gaming world. I have played it and i loved it and i am sure all who have played it will praise it.

My reasons to buys PS3- Bluray ,free online play(save $60/yr or less compared to Xbox), reliable, space on disk is not a concern since bluray can have 50Gb.

One more reason psjailbreak now I can backup all my games to a hard drive as a backup!!!!

If you are a media freak, you will love it. It can do so much, and with easy upgradable storage, it can hold anything you throw at it. Bluray player is a huge plus, and how well it upscales normal dvd's, you would swear they were 720p. I watched Blazing Saddles last night, and I could see the pores in the peoples faces, and this is at least a 30 yr old movie lol.

Also, Free online play.

PS4 is at minimum 2 years away, don't wait.

Blu-ray is great, as well as fantastic DVD upscaling. Streaming from PC is, I believe, as good if not better than streaming to an XBox, but others will have to confirm that.

Games you'd like judging by your post:

Killzone 2 (Kz 3 due out next year)

Uncharted / Uncharted 2

God of War III (grab God of War Collection for PS3 as well to play the first two games that originally appeared on PS2)

inFamous (inFamous 2 due next year)

Metal Gear Solid 4

possibly Resistance: Fall of Man (launch title) and Resistance 2 -- doesn't necessarily compare well against CoD, but decent overall shooters that can be gotten bargain price.

You won't have to worry quite as much about jackasses on PS3, simply because not as many people have headsets, there isn't as much **** talking, and when there is, you probably won't understand it anyway. Plus it's free, but for speeds, ymmv -- I have no problems, but I'm on a 5Ghz 'n' connection.

Now, however, I'm getting utterly sick of all the bull**** around XBL. Accounts are still getting hacked

This happens on the Playstation Network as well.

charging up-the-ass for new content

Playstation Network charges the same.

and paying for the service in the first place.

If you don't need the features that XBL offers over the Playstation Network, then no, XBL is not for you.

Problem is, I'm a fan-boy and haven't even considered the PS3 up until recently, so I have no clue what the PS3 has to offer.

Have a look through the pages of this exact forum you are in right now. There is a plethora of details on what the PS3 offers. In short, you can get a free multiplayer online experience (albeit less features) and PS3 exclusive titles. There is a Blu-ray player for Blu-ray movies if you are not interested in downloading 1080p movies from the respective online marketplaces.

The games I mainly play right now are Call of Duty, Gears of War, and Guitar Hero/Rock Band. I also have a passion with Halo, and am looking forward to Reach.

The PS3 has a big list of exclusive titles that you may enjoy. I believe it would be in your best interest to keep your Xbox 360 for the Xbox 360 exclusives, and then get a PS3 for multiplatform/exclusive games for use with the free online.

So kick back, relax, and hold on to your wallets. The Epic Games store brought along two games from wildly different genres this week for PC gamers to claim. Robobeat is a rhythm-based action game that lets you become a bounty hunter that can wall run, slide, and bunny hop around his opponents. All you have to do is stick to the beat for the built-in or custom songs. Next, Citizen Sleeper is a sci-fi RPG adventure taking place in a ruined space station. It uses tabletop RPG-inspired elements like dice rolls and timers to change up how players approach its activities, factions, and storylines. The Citizen Sleeper and Robobeat giveaways end on June 25. On the same day, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and Voidwrought will become the next freebies. The bundle space expanded with two more collections from Humble this week too. The June 2unes bundle is up first, carrying plenty of rhythm games. This carries Kill the Music and Rhythm Witch in the $5 starting tier, followed by Trombone Champ, Spin Rhythm XD, and Thumper in the $7 tier. Paying at least $12 gets you the complete bundle, which adds on Kalpa: Cosmic Symphony, Everhood 2, NOISZ, and Sixtar Gate: StarTrail. The next bundle is for virtual reality fans. This carries Among Us 3D: VR and Zero Caliber VR for $10. The next tier brings in Tactical Assault VR, Ancient Dungeon, and Arizona Sunshine Remake for $15. VTOL VR, Zero Caliber 2 Remastered, Metro Awakening, and Thief VR land to finish things off for $18.
