I don't want to discourage you, but I have the same problem since April this year.

I did absolutely everything, you did, and was online with the live chat. I have W7 and we found with the debugger tool that FF stops working during a specific process, where I got said that this has already been solved.

A bug has been opened here https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=574215 and since nothing.

I think there will never be a patch as they are going to release version 4 soon.

I asked them recently if there will finally be an update, or if I must change browser, and guess what, no answer.

Luck must be with us to get results

does ff 4 beta work for you ? as i cant even get that to work

This may be a dumb question, but have you tried downloading the zipped version instead of the installer and simply extracting the files to your Firefox install folder, overwriting the old files?

Try this one, http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-firefox-3.6.x/firefox-3.6.11pre.en-US.win32.zip, see if it runs, and then if it does but you still want to stick to release versions try running the installer again.

didnt know they had zipped versions  :pinch: will give it a try thanks

From the sounds of the bug report posted by netomax, the problem could be associated with your virus scanner? Have you tried turning it off and starting FF?

well the only av i use is Microsoft security essentials and its not stopped anything before but i will also give this a try too thanks

well ive just tried the zipped version and still the same problem it launches but no window just the process in the task manager i also tried it with mse switched off and it would not work going to try installing 3.6.10 while mse switch off but im not holding my breath for it working

well no surprize there it didnt work thanks for the suggestion guys but looks like its a lost hope

Something that changed between 3.6.3 and 3.6.4+ was the inclusion of the plugin container, which meant that if flash or other plugins crashed, it wouldn't crash all of Firefox. Is there a way of killing the plugin-container.exe process and seeing if Firefox opens?

Yeah, sorry, I'm out of ideas. I've never had any kind of issue like this with Firefox and frankly I was surprised after 6 days you still hadn't gotten it running again. It may be the bug Intrinsica was talking about so maybe the next release will fix it. Good luck, and don't give up hope yet; maybe somebody else will think of something that works.

Edit: Firefox does have a safe mode, have you tried running it in safe mode?

You really had 2 options after the first lot of things you tried didnt resolve the problem... Reinstall windows or use another browser. Its time consuming but I bet you've spent more time trying to resolve this then if you had just installed it on a fresh install of windows.

dom.ipc.plugins.enabled set to false?

And what plugins do you have installed? Are they all up to date?

erm the dom.ipc.plugins.enbled ? where do i changes this ? and as for the plugins i use

well reinstalling is no option at the moment and im trying the new beta ie9 but 2 things put me off using it is the HUGE back icon and the adblock does not block the frames/boxes after importing the .xml

yea tried safe mode each time still no joy and as to to killing the plugin container and then launching ff i have not a clue  will give a look after work though

thanks again for sugestions/replys

Normally you would access the option by opening the browser about typing "about:config" (minus the quotes). But since the problem is that you cannot open the browser, you'll need to edit the options by going to C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles, and then opening the folder there. In that folder you'll find prefs.js and user.js. Search for ipc.dom and set the 5 boolean options to false.

This could end up stopping Firefox from running, but given that this is the current situation, it couldn't get any worse :p

A "reinstall" of Windows may not be an entirely bad idea. Uninstall Firefox, delete your Firefox profile, and then start an "upgrade" install (to the same Windows edition) of Windows before you go to bed. This is the same thing as doing a "repair" install when booting off the disc. The downside of this is that you'll have to reinstall all your Windows updates when it's done, including IE9, and you'll probably have to reactivate, but at this point I'm not sure it's a Firefox problem at all (a new Firefox profile should have fixed the issue) so it may be a problem with your Windows install.

Also, if you use Daemon Tools or similar apps that require SPTD, you should uninstall SPTD first and then reinstall it after the "upgrade."

You could add this to your prefs.js file:

user_pref("dom.ipc.plugins.enabled", false);

Default values aren't listed in prefs.js so a search will bring up nothing. The line needs to be added.

I actually meant plugins and not not extensions, however, you probably don't have any installed anymore at this point. I think...

this is what im using in ff 3.6.3 the only version i can use that works for me

Have you checked your hardware and run a full MalwareBytes scan? It could be something else that's causing it besides a Firefox problem. Also, try renaming Firefox.exe to something else. If it works you probably have a trojan or something similar that's preventing the browser from running. Low disk space can also prevent Firefox from running.

never used malwarebytes before nor renamed ff.exe as for disk space over 100gb left and i have 4gb ram  but will look into malwarebytes and try again with renaming the exe but im pretty confident i have no virus/trojan if i do itl be the tracking types

I made everything that was possible, erasing all data and registry peaces, remove manually everything going with firefox, made a full antivir scanner, a malware scanner, made a fresh 3.6.3 install without any data and any plugin.

Even after do everything, there is no way that the update works.

Installing version 4 doesn't help either.

The live support couldn't help me further. There is a process freezing, but they don't know how to release it, and because they are working on version 4, I think we will stay like this until a good hearted puts his hand in the motor

I use Chrome in the meantime.

    • Got it. Seem like a good improvement. Thanks. But, before we "Add the source to Trusted Sites," how would know if it is trusted or not? Could get messy for not first Knowing" it is clean. See what I mean?
