+Frank B. Subscriber² Posted September 9, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted September 9, 2010 VLC Video Player Coming to iPad As first reported by Mac4Ever, VLC has been ported to the iPad by Applidium with the blessing of the VideoLan team. The app is currently in submission with Apple and is awaiting approval. After several month of porting, we are proud to announce the release of VLC for the iPad! This application stands out for two reasons. First, it will be available for free on the AppStore. But that?s not all. VLC is an OpenSource project. We are currently preparing our patches for submission to the main VLC tree. And obviously, we will release our current working tree when the app will hit the AppStore. If everything goes well, VLC for the iPad should be available next week. VLC (Video Lan Client) is a very popular open source media player for the Mac and other platforms. One of its strengths is the ability to play a wide variety of video formats (chart) and streaming support. Xerxes
Meh I can't see the point of it to be honest :/ I mean other then being able to stream media over WiFi (or 3G if your iPad has that) it's just a duplication of the existing media player. If it allowed you to play a larger variety of different types of media files off the device itself, then I'd be excited. I'm just not sold on streaming, due to the insane data costs/restrictions on 3G access [in Australia] I'd never use streaming on the go and when I'm at home using my own wireless network...well I can just listen/watch the media on my computer or TV. that is my 2 cents at any rate, take with a grain of salt. iphone? There is an iPhone 4 version in the works apparently, I'm not sure if it's actually iPhone 4 exclusive or all iPhones get it though. However, is nothing official so take with a grain of salt. matthewmarley
You can already do this on the iPad with CineXplayer http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id384098375?mt=8 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/936562-vlc-video-player-coming-to-ipad/#findComment-593134934 Share on other sites

matthewmarley
Its not streaming, you load the video files in to the app from iTunes. Xerxes
Its not streaming, you load the video files in to the app from iTunes. But iTunes does not accept unsupported* files! meaning you can only import media files iTunes supports (which means the iPad will play them natively) and thereby making VLC redundant! If there is a way to get unsupported files onto the iPad (through iTunes or even other means) then it'd be extremely useful. * = by unsupported I mean your MKV/DivX etc Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/936562-vlc-video-player-coming-to-ipad/#findComment-593137644 Share on other sites

Wouldn't Apple just deny VLC if it played non-supported media types on its own? (Not stating, asking). BBgamer
There will probably be a port for it for iPhone/iPod Touch on Cydia. Feel free to jailbreak if you're on iOS 4.0 or iOS 4.0.1 - Open safari, go to jailbreakme.modmyi.com and follow the onscreen simple instructions.
