No Bootsplash in Ubutu 10.4?

Recommended Posts

Hey I have installed Ubuntu 10.04. But I don't have a 'bootsplash'/start up screen like this:

All I have is a blank screen. How do I fix it? Shouldn't it just be there by default? Do I need to install anything extra, like usplash or something?

Also exactly what Google apps are available for Linux/Ubuntu now? I read somewhere Google Desktop Search was available. This would rock, as having tried Beagle in the past and not having been all that impressed with it (it lacked the feel of real OS integration, and always just seemed to run like a separate app.), I would be hopeful that Google Desktop search would work a bit better.

Has anyone tied it? What's your view? Now that Mac and Windows both have advanced Desktop search integration, it seems that search (or specifically pre-built-in integrated search) is one area where Gnome is still seriously lacking.

The boot thing is called plymouth. It's probably not showing because your video drivers are not properly installed, or you're using an obscure/ancient GPU that isn't easily supported by linux. Are you able to enable 'desktop effects' when you right click desktop > change background > effects tab? If not, you need to check your video driver.

Its a two year old Acer Aspire laptop with a non obscure bog standard intel gpu, using native drivers (non-proprietary) and yes full desktop effects (with extras) are enabled without a glitch.

I'm sorting the laptop for my sister, who doesn't dig that there's some weird looking text at the beginning of the boot run, then a black screen, then a little more text before the Gnome log on screen. I just want to hide this from her and give her something that looks vaguely familiar to what she's used to.

In the old days problems with Bootsplash used to be with the framebuffer, so maybe this will help.

Bizarre that users are still having problems like this all these years on though.

    • This 4K webcam from Acer is now only $59.99 by Taras Buria Those looking for an affordable, high-resolution webcam from a reputable manufacturer can check out the latest deal from Acer, which puts its 4K webcam at a solid price. Thanks to a 14% discount, you can buy this all-metal 4K webcam from Acer for just $59.99. Despite the affordable price tag, the webcam has a pretty large 1/2" CMOS sensor manufactured by Sony. Apart from its size, it supports additional conveniences, such as high dynamic range and phase-detection autofocus (PDAF). Plus, the camera ensures you do not have to buy additional audio equipment, as it comes with two built-in high-sensitivity microphones, a built-in background noise filter, and the ability to pick up your voice from up to 2.5 meters away. Acer is not cheaping out on materials, and the webcam is enclosed in a more premium metal case, which is also good at heat dissipation (high-resolution cameras can get quite hot). And to make sure no one is peeping at you when the camera is in use, there is a magnetic cover also made of metal. Additional conveniences include an LED status indicator and a built-in mount that lets you place a camera on a tripod.
