I have learnt so much about the mac in the last few days just searching around the internet... and i still haven't got a mac! But i am greedy and want to learn more!

I want to learn how do i install Mac OS into a computer. I have installed windows on a pc a trillion times but the mac os for the mac not once! Some of the questions are: (refering to Mac os x)

1. How do i get started? What stuff do i need to get ready?

2. Does the Mac os cd boot from cd room?

3. How do i formated the hard drive? What is the mac equivalent to fdisk?

4. Can i dual boot? How does it work?

5. Partitioning - How do i do this on the mac?

I am still thinking of more questions. Your anwsers are more than welcomed!;) Links would also be great!

Phillip

PS : thanks to the neowin mac community for their help so far!

yea im interested in that too..

and if i may add..

technically, can you install PPC distros of UNIX on a Mac? always wanted to know that..

I know there is Yellow Dog Linux that is meant to run on a Macintosh. We tried doing that for a few servers where I used to work, which was all Apple based.

you stick the cd in and hold down c, accept the language, accept the eula, click ok, then sit back and let it do its work.

as for partitioning just go to installer at the top and select disk utility

heres a pic of the partitioning system

1.First off you need an OS X Install CD. Much like a windows one only 10x easier

2.the mac os boots from the CD rom althought you can't actually jump into the desktop , you may only run the installer

3. fdisk is puke compared to disc utility, its a full on nice and super easy GUI built into the Install CD, just launh it from the menu. Very easy, you can make as many partitions as you wish.

4. Dual booting is so easy on a mac, make 2 partitions and install and OS on either one, then go to startup disk in the system prefs and you change it from there

5. Refer to number 3

OMG! i can't believe it is that easy! and the gui of the disk tool... What steve jobs said back in 99 (i think) was so true... "mac os x will be so beautiful, you'll just want to lick it!" And mac os x has all these great tools... fdisk sucks!

anyway thanks guys for sharing that with me!

ps : just one more question if you don't mind.

At startup can i chose which os i want to boot, instead of loading the defualt os and going back to the disk tool?

Does anyone know of someone / or somewhere that I can get Screenshots of the Full Install Process of Mac OS X Jaguar...there are plenty of sites that do this for Windows...how 'bout Apple?

For the visual personality in me...would be greatly appreciated!!

It's not like a Windows install. Very straight-foward as a matter of fact. I'm sure Apple has a guide on it though. Actually, a guide should come with Jaguar or a computer with Jaguar installed. Small, but enough to get you through the installation fine.

Really, you won't need it. Once you boot from the CD, the process is very straight-forward, with informational texts along the way. The only thing you need to know is the fact that you launch Disk Utility (for partitioning purposes) from the Installer menu. It's all smooth sailing :)
