[Mac] Configuring Outlook 2011 for Gmail?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

How best is it to configure Outlook 2011 for use with Gmail? Basically so Outlook syncs email properly between it's own Inbox and Gmail's folders.

For example, if I have new email, it will appear in the Gmail Inbox at the top of the screenshot. I read it, and delete/archive it when needed. Then the same emails appear in the Gmail 'All Mail' folder. I read it and delete/archive it. A few seconds later it will appear as unread in the 'Deleted Items' folder.

Oh yeah, I have Gmail setup as IMAP not POP3. Any ideas? unsure.gif

I put in my Gmail info and let Outlook automatically get the basic account info setup. Then I went into Tools > Accounts > Gmail > Advanced and then clicked on the folders. This lets you choose where each folder will point to. You can also go to Outlook preferences > General and tick the box that says "Hide On My Computer folders" so it doesn't show those if you want. It's working pretty well so far, the only issue I've run across is there's an extra sent folder and it will sometimes try to update that folder but it doesn't exist on the server so it throws an error.

IMAP is GMail's default.

If you use Automatic Configuration (which is the default in Outlook 2011) it will handle the details automatically.

The automatic configuration originally appeared in Outlook 2010 for Windows (and I was seriously impressed by it *because* of the ease of which it handled GMail); to have it also on the Mac has made it that much tougher for competing e-mail applications to gain any traction.

I was looking for manual configuration settings for Outlook 2011 Mac, to configure with my google apps account where I have my email hosting for my personal domain.

I found a good tutorial at http://support.sherweb.com/Faqs/Show/how-to-configure-a-pop3-account-in-outlook-2011-for-mac-exchange-2010
