The Taiwan-based optical lens maker Newmax Technology announced that they have shipped 14 million Kinect cameras, with more being ordered for December 2010 and into January 2011. Their business with Microsoft has been good for the company, they reported increasing revenue with 50% of it coming just from Kinect alone.

Newmax's third-quarter revenues amounted to NT$687 million (US$22 million), of which 50-55% came from Kinect camera modules. Newmax has received additional orders for the camera modules, with some of the shipments scheduled for December 2010 or January 2011, the sources indicated.

This looks like MS are going in seriously towards snatching a good chunk of Wii's casual fanbase. Do you think Kinect is going to dominate motion gaming?.

That is some serious Kinect shippage.

Seems like an awful lot considering, I have no doubt that they have a lot of pre-orders, and we know they aiming for 3 million for Christmas, but 14 million sitting around seems like overkill at this point taking into account what they are aiming for.

Though I guess if you need 2 camera parts per Kinect, it makes sense in the long run having the main parts for atleast 7 million Kinects ready to go if needed.

I would love to know the savings on buying 14 million in bulk though, lol.

It's not like shopping stops dead after the holidays, that's probably the order for the whole quarter. And honestly, if they order that many then they probably have a very good idea of what to expect sales wise. Big companies like this don't just order blindly for the sake of it.

sweet that means the new dash update is coming soon!

you DO NOT want to update to the newest dashboard if your system is moded as Fable 3 has new copy protections in it (i.e. SSv3 and AP25 checks) that when in combination with the newest beta dashboards (which i am sure will be in final Nov 4th or so) will stop your backup copies from working (at least as far as Fable 3 is concerned) and most likely flag you for a ban etc.

so it's probably a matter of time before all games start incorporating these new checks.

and from what i read you can still play Fable3 on a original disc with current LT firmware with the newest dashboard just not on a backup copy. but 'supposedly' on the current v9199 MS dashboard backup's of fable 3 run fine.

so bottom line is... update to newest dashboard at your own risk if your system is moded!

cole's note = if you pirate, don't update.

How long till games start to require the new dashboard update to play?

in the past its basically any game released after the official update, so i'm going to presume this will be the same way. But the method that plays backups requires the firmware of the DVD drive to be flashed, so in the past sometimes dashboard updates didn't matter or the games themselves would be cracked to play on earlier version. It;s kinda complicated and my xbox died a year ago so i've been completely out of the scene, but that is what I remember.

and im pretty sure i contradicted myself a couple of times there too...

I don't think Black Ops will come with it though as the final Dash hasn't yet been compiled (I think, anyway, unless the 12611 is the final version) and Black Ops has probably already gone gold so...yeah.

But back to the topic in question, if that's 7 million Kinect units for sale then it's no so bad, considering they are anticipating 3 million by the end of the year, that 4 million can make itself up in the New Year in that first quarter if they really push it.

Isn't that common knowledge by now? They always do a dash update and ban wave right before the holidays. By now I would expect people with modded consoles to just expect to have to buy a new console once per year. It's not that bad, really. All you do is get the arcade for 200 and then use your old HDD in it. That's the price of 2 and a half games, so it more than pays for itself by the next ban wave.

1. This does say cameras, not complete Kinect units correct? So it will take a while for the 14 million to make it's way through manufacturing and distribution, but good to see the pre-order demand and ensuing holiday demand will be met. Nice to see interest in this product is as high as it deserves to be, innovation should be rewarded... No matter how hard Audio cries about it.

2. I'm so happy that another ban wave is coming, pirating douche bags deserve to suffer with their "backup copy" of games.

shipping 14 million cameras is not equal to 14 million KINECT sensors themselves. the cameras are probably the cheapest portion. Also I don't believe it considering Amazon and Best Buy are already sold out

Welk it doesn't say if it's the b canera or the ir depth camera. But I'd assume it's eitjer the ir one or a module with both. Which down the line does translate to 14 million kinects, eventually.
