Xbox 360 and MKV Streaming Support

Apparently, using (Sha)rk(007)'s Codec Pack plus Windows Media Center you can stream .mkv h264 videos to your Xbox 360.

Anyone try this? Or know of any alternatives?

Never used it so not sure.

I know it might sound silly but a program called "ps3 media server" actually streams quite well to xbox360, i've used it and have helped a couple friends use it.

It does .mkv .ts .iso plus all the formats that already streamed before.

It's probably the best because it rarely trans codes, usually it's able to just remux from .mkvs and .ts files.

Download the beta, as the stable release is actually quite old and the beta just works better.

-Once installed go to navigation/sharing settings, add the folders you want to be shared.

-Then go to Transcoding settings, select your number of cores (actual cores, i7's and others might let you select 8 but best to choose 4). Also check "keep DTS in stream" and "Remux when audio track is AC3".

-If your on wireless under the video quality settings drop down select "Good HD for Wifi" option. If wired just leave at default for best picture quality.

-Still under Transcoding Settings go to MEncoder, check "Enhanced multicore support for H264 HD content" if you have more then 2 cores.

-Hit the save button, close and reopen PS3 media server for good measure and go check it out on your 360.

Theres very little I've run into that it doesn't play on Xbox360 or PS3.

I also had the same problem.

I downloaded DIVX from the website, and as long as your codecs on your pc are able to play mkv's, and you use the media centre on your windows 7 machine to add your folders, and access it using the media centre app on your xbox.... it works!!

PS3 Media Servers works excellently with the 360, although it is a little better on the PS3.

I've been getting confused by these things... If I have a DTS capable receiver, do I need to remux the audio track when it's AC3? Can the receiver not accept the audio track as it is? Or is remuxing it putting it back in its original state before some sort of compression?

That probably sounds like a dumb question, but researching home theater streaming options has left my brain to mush.

I use mkvtools or mkvcleaver to extract the video and audio tracks (Often .h264 and .ac3) then mux them into a m2ts container which Xbox360's love through MCE.

Plus I can play them on any windows 7 based machine without the need for a codec pack. :)

I use txMuxer which takes a MKV and spits out a M2ts, just like you said.
