Introducing the new Skype for Mac, now available in Beta

It was worth the wait – the new Skype 5.0 is now available for Mac today in beta, introducing a revamped look and feel that simplifies navigation and provides a more Mac-like experience. For example, the Skype app has been brought together in one window for ease-of-use, and the Mac address book has been integrated, making it possible for you to call, IM and SMS your contacts when they are online or offline.

The new Skype for Mac also offers our popular new feature - http://www.skype.com/intl/en/features/allfeatures/group-video-calls/?cm_mmc=socialm|skypeblogs-_-global|intl|en-_-bigblog-_-m5|betagroup video calling - which allows you to make video calls with more than two people at a time as long as all participants are on the new Mac beta or Skype for Windows 5.0. Group video calling brings people together like never before, allowing you to do more things together with your friends, family and colleagues whenever you are apart.

The new Skype for Mac also includes the following new features:

  • New call control bar — Hang up, mute and more from a mini Skype toolbar that sits on top of any web pages, documents or photos you’ve got open
  • Search chat content to easily navigate past conversations
  • Offline IM so that you can send and receive instant messages even if the recipient is offline
  • Personalise contacts via user profiles
  • Quickly rejoin calls if your Internet connection fails momentarily
  • Floating Contacts Monitor to see your online contacts and contact groups

Try out the new Skype for Mac in beta and tell us what you think using the Skype > Provide Skype Feedback menu item. And stay posted as we roll out the official version soon.

For being the designers of skype they sure do have crappy bandwidth or a crappy camera. Not really a great showing of video quality

2nd, I don't remember Windows Looking that neat when talking to 3 people and having the video spaced out like that.

awesome, I love the one-window-approach. There is still a lot of cosmetic work to be done, but that is definately better than having a small window for EVERYTHING... That was the only thing I hated... glad it's fixed.

Which model of MacBook?

probably the last gen, those things fans love to show you they are working hard...

also why can't there be an option for a compact window like their is in the Windows version? Not a fan of this big giant one.

I find it rather interesting that it seems we have a 50/50 split on people's preferences on one big window vs multiple smaller windows.

I also find it rather amusing that the Windows version lets you choose between the two modes, and so far the Mac version does not.

Personally, I don't know why people would have so many windows open with the old (official) version of Skype. The conversation windows are tabbed, and there is one contact list window. If you're on a call there's a 3rd window with the call controls. Where are you guys getting so many windows open from?

Anyway, I'll give the beta version a try later tonight to see what the hoopla is about.

But seriously, all I want is a message notification count in my menubar icon. Until that thing shows me the number of unread convos I have, it's just a useless logo sitting there looking "pretty". The Windows version does it, so why can't the Mac client?

    • Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2 to finally get one of the most requested features by Sayan Sen This past week Microsoft officially confirmed Windows 11 version 26H2 with the latest build, 26300.8697, for testing in the experimental Insider channel. The company also published more details about it mainly directed towards IT admins and system admins. Essentially version 26H2 will be delivered via an enablement package (eKB) over Windows 11 25H2. If you are wondering about some of the upcoming features in the next Windows version, one of them is certainly very interesting as Microsoft has confirmed it is finally bringing one of the most overwhelmingly requested features ever. March Rogers, the Partner Director of Design at Microsoft, recently highlighted some of the Search improvements that the company is testing, and during the interaction with users on X where he posted it, Rogers also confirmed that the company is working on disabling web search results inside Search. This is something which many users find quite annoying as Windows would often serve them links to Bing which it feels could be more helpful rather than bringing up the actual object or app the user may be searching for on their PC. Finally though the company is prioritizing local file search over the web. However the feature could not be disabled for many users as not all new features are immediately rolled out to everyone. Image via phantomofearth (X) Windows enthusiast phantomofearth who likes to dig deep into new builds uncovered the IDs you will need to enable these features. Using the following feature IDs the new Search-related features landing in Windows 11 26H2 can be used. Follow the steps below to enable the new Search experience on Windows 11 build 26300.8697: Download ViveTool from GitHub and unpack the files in a convenient and easy-to-find folder. Press Win + X and select Terminal (Admin). Switch Windows Terminal to the Command Prompt profile with the Ctrl + Shift + 2 shortcut or by clicking the arrow-down button at the top of the window. Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files with the CD command. For example, if you have placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive. Type vivetool /enable /id: and press Enter. Restart your computer. If you change your mind and want to restore, repeat the steps above and replace /enable with /disable in the commands on steps 5 and 6. Delightedly and perhaps also expectedly, once you disable web search and other such bloat, the Windows 11 Search is said to get snappier as remarked by another Windows enthusiast Xeno.
