Citrix Metaframe alternative

Question

I'm looking for something that basically acts like a citrix server, allowing users to run apps via a webpage, without any installation. I looked for some linux solutions, but so far nothing that really looks like what I'm wanting. I know this is a speciality software that probably has a big open source following, but I'm sure if there is a solution, someone here would probably know.

understanding citrix requires you to understand that there is more to it than just the ica part of it. windows apps need a windows host for instance. what would you run on a linux box, open office, apache, some other free solution? the new 2008 server does have the capability of publishing apps with iis, vs using citrix's nfuse technology to do it. That would be your cheapest solution, you still need to purchase ts cals, but you don't have to purchase citrix cals.

For your reading enjoyment.

At my job we use Citrix. I personally hate it. We have a client that is using TS (Terminal Services). It looks awesome, runs better, but we have problems with printing. I believe the calls for this have dropped off but Citrix reigns supreme in the amount of support calls that we receive on a daily basis. I would suggest TS as well. It seems more reliable and functions better.

9 times out of 10 it is usually a driver issue. drivers need to be loaded on the ts (just like citrix) in the server/drivers tab. You can get away with using a universal print driver for both ts and citrix.

http://www.uniprint.net for example. It is an added cost, but you don't have to load drivers for every printer every user uses. One server app, followed by a client app, and it creates a "tunnel" for print jobs between the server and the client which then uses the client print drivers. This is also good for low bandwidth users who need to print, before it leaves the server it converts it into a pdf then sends it to the client as the compressed file, then the client prints that (all in the background of course). There are other universal print solutions. Catering to 1000's of clients isn't easy, esp when they all have different printers.
