Hi, ive been busy filling my new NAS drive with all my important files. I am able to easily access the contents from within my network (192.168.*.*) but need access to it from when i am away from home. Is it possible to access the drive directly or will I need some sort of access to my home pc to be able to view the contents? Please can you advise me on what; if any, software i will need and how to go about accessing my documents. Many Thanks.

Here are my specs:

Iomega 1.5 tb NAS drive (have set ftp and smb access via the internal homepage)

Windows 7 Pro 64bit (oem)

A working dyndns account.

smb from public net not really going to happen.. But ftp is easy - just forward port 21 to your nas on your router.. Shazam ftp from anywhere on the planet just access your public IP from outside your network.

Yup sure smb can be done vpn as offroad mentions, but that involves more than just forwarding a port to your already running ftp server. You stated you already have ftp running - so click forward port 21 to it on your router and its available to the public.

Now keep in mind ftp is not really a secure method.. passwords are sent in the clear sort of thing.. I would would never in a million years open up ftp access to anything on my private network, unless it was via vpn ;)

SFTP would be a better option - does your nas support that?

But from the 2 options you gave, ftp is click available to the public as you want.

Thanks guys. FTP is the route i will try first. My nas is password protected as are the shares within it. Im also able to map a custom port, although this adds little if no extra security, it will make it a bit more difficult to find. When i have time tho, i will set up a vpn for the long term. Thanks guys.
