How many of you play World of Warcraft on more than one machine?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

So, I play World of Warcraft on my iMac most of the time and my MacBook Pro when I'm out and about and even occasionally on my friend's computer. Keeping my addons and settings up-to-date between machines is such a pain in the ass, so I started to search for something to keep everything in sync.

I found:

- Curse Client premium. Cons: Pay-monthly and Windows-only for sync. Pros: None?

- Various manual methods that link various WoW directories with services like Dropbox or Windows Live Cloud Azure something something. Cons: A pain in the ass. Pros: Free!

Eventually I embraced my (not so-)inner nerd and wrote a little syncing engine to intelligently keep my computers in sync. At the moment it's a little command-line utility that makes sure all copies of WoW you point it to have the most up-to-date versions of addons and settings present in each install.

I wondered if anyone else would find it useful if I developed it further and made it into an easy-to-use, set-and-forget syncing tool? The idea is to keep the sync store somewhere available to you, so you can manually download it and install your addons and settings if you're on a friend/internet cafe's computer and can't install the sync app.

I play on a 27" iMac and a 13" MacBook Pro. I just sync my WTF and Add-on folders using the Dropbox symlink method. It's a one-time setup pain, but it's very reliable. The only "gotcha" is that I have to make sure my machine is done syncing with Dropbox before I launch WoW, or else it gets a little confused.

I play on my main machine, and on my laptop.

Oh and be careful with the Curse gaming client.. it's had reports of viruses and stuff.

Man, I remember back in the day when people used to blame the CT mods for having keyloggers. These rumors have always been unsubstantiated.

lol what? you can't get viruses from add ons because they're basically text files with LUA in them, and the curse client is used by hundreds of thousands of people for years, although some AV will report a false positive on it's updates, but then again i've gotten flase positives for the launcher for every ncsoft game i've ever played at one time or another.

curse client is fine as long as you download it from www.curse.com and no where else.

if curse had viruses it would be widespread and well known and no one would use it.

I play on one box, an Alienware M11x docked on a cooling pad with a G19/G5 combo, headset etc. I usually 2-box my main account or whatever I'm working on atm with my mage account, for the obvious ports and dps - on the same M11x.

Hmm. Okay in case I misunderstood, I also pack around the M11x for gaming on the move. I don't login my WoW account(s) on anyone's machine(s) but my own.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. My little app wouldn't sync while WoW is open, and bail out of an in-progress sync if WoW is launched.

Also, can we avoid derailing the thread with whether Curse gives you viruses or not? Thanks.

I play on several Computers, I sync them with dropbox :p and I use the Curse free client to update them to the latest version on my main gaming machine.

The curse gaming client DOES have some problems, and a lot of mmo-c users have been reporting issues with it lately.

I'd still manually download and update or rezip addons and port them to another computer than using an automatic installer.

I just use it to see if any of my addons need an update.

I play wow on 2 different computers and I too was actually thinking of writing something similar to a syncing programs as well as an Auto-Updater (Basically Curse Premium for free).

if curse client was the problem, just having it installed would pretty much guarantee getting hacked. millions of people would be getting hacked daily by using it.

anyways on topic: i barely play wow on just one pc, let alone multiple ones. that being said if i did i would upload a add on package somewhere i knew it would stay safe and download it whenever i used a new pc for wow, if i didn't have access to my desktop to sync some other way.

sounds cool though.

    • Zen Browser 1.21.4b by Razvan Serea Zen Browser is a privacy-focused, open-source web browser built on Mozilla Firefox, offering users a secure and customizable browsing experience. It emphasizes privacy by blocking trackers, ads, and ensuring your data isn't collected. With Zen Mods, users can enhance their browser experience with various customization options, including features like split views and vertical tabs. The browser is designed for efficiency, providing fast browsing speeds and a lightweight interface. Zen Browser prioritizes user control over the browsing experience, offering a minimal yet powerful alternative to traditional web browsers while keeping your online activity private. Zen Browser’s DRM limitation Zen Browser currently lacks support for DRM-protected content, meaning streaming services like Netflix and HBO Max are inaccessible. This is due to the absence of a Widevine license, which requires significant costs and is financially unfeasible for the developer. Additionally, applying for this license would require Zen to be part of a larger company, similar to Mozilla or Brave. Therefore, DRM-protected media won't be supported in Zen Browser for the foreseeable future. Zen Browser offers features that improve user experience, privacy, and customization: Privacy-Focused: Blocks trackers and minimizes data collection. Automatic Updates: Keeps the browser updated with security patches. Zen Mods: Customizable themes and layouts. Workspaces: Organize tabs into different workspaces. • I was using searxng for about a year , self hosted, but results were starting to timeout and eventually it became unusable so I switched to degoog. Much better for my needs, more polished and add-ons like maps and calculations etc

    • Hello, I am not as familiar with AMD CPUs as I am with Intel's, but as I understand it, that's a mid-range CPU from about three years ago.  I would think it to be fine for everyday casual-type use.  A larger SSD might be better, but with storage prices these days that's a decision that has to be carefully thought about.
