You can't stop the execution. Its part of the storyline. The fella was a guard who let Ulfric escape after he murdered the High King.

My entry into Solitude was dramatic. I travelled in the carriage from Whiterun. As soon as I reached the stables, I had to encounter a dragon. One more dragon appears randomly near the Legion HQ.

Yesterday I had my own moment. The Boneyard Dragon dude was smashed by a mammoth roaming in the nearby camp.

Anyone been to Solitude yet? It's a city to the far east. I just arrived, and there is a execution at the front gates happening. All the towns people are crying for it to stop and saying how noble the guy on the block is. So I have been trying to save him, but it never works out... should I just let him die? Anyone have a clue?

Been there and bought the home (around 26K to buy all the stuff for it)

Also the guy is supposed to die its part of the story.

I envy you dude. I have been trying to purchase that house but i couldn't resist the temptations in buying some or the other odd thing. :D

How have you been trying to save him? attacking the guards? The executioner himself? Have you tried hovering over the prisoner himself? I saw a few prisoners being lead around towns and fields that were surrounded by guards. If you hover over the prisoner you can hit a button to free them. I wonder if you can do the same thing with the execution?

Oh Yeah lol. First I walked up to the Captain, which was too close, because they instantly attacked at that point. Reloaded. Walked up to guard, wouldn't talk to me, Captain wouldn't talk to me. Watched the execution up to the axe dropping, tried to blast executioner with fire, but was too late in animation and he beheaded the guy. Reloaded. Run in fireballs blasting, take out 3 guards almost instantly, towns people apparently hurt in explosions, so everyone is against me. Reload. Run in firebolts blazing, take out the guards, but 1 of the towns women seems to dislike that, and continues to hit me, while more guards run in, and I die.

Damn, Ok. Was hoping I could save him then help him get to be the king or whatever. Cause all the town people were making it sound like it was some fair duel between him and the king, and that now the guards are just ****ed the king lost.

I am not getting many if any random dragon encounters. I've been skipping fast travel, and just running to all my points, that way I find all the hidden areas and whatnot. But no dragons for about 5 hours of gameplay. I've had 2 fly down, but then just instantly fly away, not even giving me a chance to fire at them. Luckily I have found 2 of the dragon shrines with words and a dragon guarding them, so I have at least not had no dragon fights... just no random encounters :(

Damn, I haven't purchased any houses... But I guess since I am leader of the mage guild, and a part of the dark brotherhood and companions, I already have plenty of places to leave my goods. I just run into my mage home, drop everything, and run out. I love how this game remembers exactly where EVERYTHING is.

I've also been spending all my gold on maxing skills, buying spells, and health pots lol. But since I learned how to make health pots finally last night in my random alchemy debacle, I might start saving some gold for once.

Is it bad that I haven't touched the main story line since I left Whiterun? I haven't met the Greybeards or anything. I have just been joining all the little sub groups and doing random quest they ask..... And this game really makes it feel like the character is working his way up to be High King. Seems any group I'm joining, I'm working my way up to the top of the leading ladder.

You can definitely save Margaret in that Dwarven city when the Forsworn tries to kill her. That Dwemer city called Markarth is definitely a great place to roam. However Solitude is my favorite.

I have the Whiterun AND solitude Homes Fully furnished, I also have full Dragon Scale Armor, Mage Collage, and Theives Guild completed. But i am only a few quests into the main story line as i have been just doing other things. and about 40 hours in. :D

Its actually closer to 35k I think, the house on its own costs 25k, then multiple upgrades that cost between 500-2k.

Just bought the house myself last night, then got one of the many 2k upgrades leaving me at about 200 gold in my pocket.....and that's after completing the storylines for the thief guild and dark brotherhood.

EDIT: Still not having as easy of a time as I thought I would as a thief, but that's what I get for powerleveling sneak (its lvl 90 and I'm like level 30.....one handed and light armor aren't even 50 yet). It works really well for the most part, but there's some mobs that I will sneak attack with a power attack (15x multiplier on a power attack), and it drops them down to like half health only. They are few and far between though, usually bosses or mini-bosses, so its not too bad. The only things I can 1-shot with an arrow though are standard humans (like bandits) or equal level weak mobs (wolves, etc), anything else takes an arrow to the head and has more than half health remaining. But I haven't focused much on archery yet.

Dual wielding weapons is really powerful too, I made a dual wielder, and a sword/shield, similar levels, and took them into the first quest for the companions. The first encounter was difficult for both, requiring a few potions to get through, the second one, I couldn't do it with sword/shield, it just kicked my butt over and over. The dual wielding though was significantly easier, health was low by the time the last one died, but I didn't use any potions at all on the 2nd encounter (whereas I used all I had on my sword/shield and still couldn't do it). Don't like it as much as thief play though, I really like being able to clear half a room before anyone finds me (or a whole room, depending on how carefully I play). Though bows don't seem nearly as effective at the 1-shots, they are good for weakening a target from range, hiding, then finishing him off before he finds me (or after he stops looking for me).

I think its 500 or 1000, but yeah, so far the only upgrade I have bought for it was the living room or w/e, the very first room you see when you walk in the main door, figured it would at least make my house look nice as an initial impression on anyone who comes in my house. :p

I'll keep that in mind though and save that for last (once I have however much it is just to throw around).

500, chump change! :p

With smithing at 100 and speech at 50 (30% better prices + 10% opposite sex + being able to sell anything to any merchant) plus Masque of Clavicus Vile and a necklace that gives prices 10% better. That gives me 70% better prices, (though, I don't know how the games math works, because if something says 250 value, I will get 249,) and if I find a piece of steel armor in a dungeon that is valued at 200, I can take it and temper it, and bring the value to 600-800. I found some Orcish armor with a base value of 1000, tempered it into Legendary, and can sell it for 2100. No vendor has that, so when I need to buy stuff, I spend gold on items I need, until the vendor has the 2100 to return back. I always do it with blacksmiths, as they generally have around 1100 gold on them.

A dungeon run will generally wield me around 3000-5000 gold if it is rich in armor and weapons to improve.

LOL, the merchant gold trading in this game is just silly. They are always so broke. It is like what my sister and I did as 1st graders when we were given our first chocolate bar sale. We were very very young, and as such, didn't think too far ahead of our actions. We had each sold a few candy bars, and thus had a few dollars. Some how, we got the idea that, I give her one of my dollars, she gives me one of her chocolate bars. Then she gives me the dollar back, and I give her one of my chocolate bars. In our young minds, we thought this was a fool proof plan to get us as many chocolate bars as we wanted.... My mother ended up having to shell out about 20 bucks to cover the bars we had eaten by the time our plan was figured out.

But this game is just like that basically. Merchant only has 200 gold huh, I guess I'll buy some more of his health pots. Now he has 300 gold, and can buy my staff, so I'll give you my staff, and you give me the gold back. I'm trying to make gold, yet in the end of my transactions, I have basically the same gold, but a few more health pots :p

Without powerleveling smithing or speech, my thief only has like 60 blacksmithing (I did actually powerlevel it some, but it skewed my level and made things much more difficult, so I stopped powerleveling it) and like 40 speech (with almost no perks in speech because I much prefer having combat skills for now). Without cheating, I don't see a viable way to level one-handed, light armor, sneak, lockpicking, pickpocket, blacksmithing, and speech......without lacking on some of my combat potential or hitting level 50+.

The reasons for lockpicking and pickpocket is because lockpicking is just really nice, most novice and adept locks, I can open without even turning the pick anymore, and I really want to get the unbreakable perk, once I get that, lockpicking will go on the backburner. Pickpocket will be awesome when you can remove an enemies armor and weapon before attacking.....plus I have a 90% chance to pickpocket virtually everything off a sleeping target unless its something worth a lot (like some necklaces). I've already stopped putting perks in sneak, the main sneak perk is 3 out of 5, but I didn't bother getting the silent one (my boots muffle sound) and I'm not too impressed with the shadow warrior perk (sounds nice, but the only time I'm detected is when I'm right on top of a target anyway...though it would help in the larger rooms where an archer on the far side spots me after I kill his buddy).

Anyway, being stealth based, its very hard to focus on stealth, combat, and money. :p

EDIT: Also, I think the "value" of an item, is how much a merchant would sell the item for, not how much you can sell it for to a merchant. Or at least, I have never seen an item sell to a merchant for its "value". A simple way to check this would be to look at an item a merchant has, look at its value, buy it, then look at its value and see if it matches what the merchant sold it to you for (without perks).

Haha, yeah, that is basically how it works :p. You would think after the multitudes of armor I have sold Mr. War-Bear in Whiterun, he would make some profit and have extra gold for me. I think he is a hoarder :shifty: .

I mean I could spend perk points for Investor and Barter after getting my speech to 100, but it seems pointless to me. You can just travel vendor to vendor getting gold. It does suck though, none having more than 1100, cause finding sweet pieces that sell for 1500+ you can never get that out of them without buying vendor goods. :/

I'm level 30 at the moment, and my One-handed is at 60, and my Light Armor is at 56. So combat is still fairly easy, I only get trouble on main dungeon bosses, but that is what Lydia is for! :p Dragon's go down without a blink. (Also mention I am on the XBOX 360 version, so I don't get console command cheats, nor would I, defeats the purpose of the game.)

The value is how much I can sell it to a vendor for, if I find something with 500 value, with all my speech perks and gear, I will get probably 495 out of that item. If I buy a Daedra heart off a vendor (236 for me), I can sell it back for about 230, I did check that last night. Speech is awesome for making easy money, and paired with smithing it is ridiculous.

I had a very funny moment earlier during lunch. Turned on the game to play for a bit and was just running around all willy nilly, when I look to my left. Now remember, I'm playing on the PS3, so the resolution is only like 720p upscaled to 1080p, and things in the distance will be blurry as is with consoles. So I'm running in the field, and to my left, I see what looks to be 2 dragons flying around each other... And I'm thinking, YES DRAGON FIGHT! So I start running over to where I think it is, when I realize.... They are just 2 butterflies about 8 feet away from my character. I was so disappointed, the butterflies weren't even fighting to their death :( But I couldn't help but laugh at my thought.

I did end up killing a bandit that was for some reason, carrying a amulet that decreases all shout cooldowns by 20%.... why did he have it when he couldn't even use it is beyond me lol.

LOL. Did you atleast catch them? :p

I see you have the same stigma, as I went on lunch and played it. Went to Dawnstar for the first time and fought a Frost Dragon as soon as I got there. Finally got him to land and ran up to swing, well apparently I wasn't hitting him, but a Dawnstar guard, so after the dragon died the town swarmed on me. ****ed me off, he should know I'm the dragonborn, thus stay out of my path in a dragon battle! (AKA had to reload and do it over again -_-)

I realized that, that was my, I think 21st dragon I've fought and beaten. I swear the second I zone into Morthal everytime there is a dragon, and the Tower outside Whiterun where you fought your first, and now Dawnstar. Don't understand how people have trouble getting random ones, I get atleast 3-5 a day, at the rate I'm going on.

EDIT: Also, sometimes, if you zone into an area where you have defeated a dragon, after a few days, his corpse will still be there, and his loot is reset, this has happened to me twice. Free scales and bones!

I did end up killing a bandit that was for some reason, carrying a amulet that decreases all shout cooldowns by 20%.... why did he have it when he couldn't even use it is beyond me lol.

Lol. Maybe he was trying to find you to sell it...? I got that one too....erm...what IS the cooldown on shouts, I don't even know. I barely remember to use them, except this new Ice Form one I got. Freezes enemies, and makes boss fights soooo easyyy (if I ever remember to use it. )

First one I was fighting a dragon on a town, guards and locals helping out. He was a tough bugger and it took a couple of moments, but we got him. Literally 2 seconds later (hadn't even got the dragon soul yet) a guard walks past me and says something like "You shouldn't be walking around with your weapon drawn, makes me uneasy". HELLO?!?!? I just saved your crummy town from a frikking DRAGON!

 ...

Last night while I was running around a forest chasing an Elk, a stupid soldier started attacking me for no reason. He was oddly hard to beat, and then a Dragon came out of nowhere. The Dragon started attacking both of us, but the idiot guard kept hitting ME instead of helping to kill the dragon that was attacking us. We both ended up dying, and the last thing I saw was an Elk walking on my dead body.

Did anyone

save the guy in Solitude, that was a 'traitor'

when you first walk in?

If so what did you get out of it?

YOU DID NOT READ MY POST! :p

But na, you can't save him. I asked everyone the same thing. I tried everything I could, but people here say it's part of the storyline, and he must die for it :( lol

Anyone got any decent magic in this game yet? I'm focusing primarily on being a warrior but also upping my destruction skill a lot. One handed is 70 something, destruction 50 something. Don't really have any decent magic as yet, best I can buy is fireball/ice blast/whatever the lightning one is (30 points of damage for each element) :(

Starting magic spells that are good are:

Chain Lightning

Firebolt

Fireball

Ice Spike

Ice Storm

and then the runes for each elements.

But basically, you are stuck with those spells until you get your magic skills into the 70+, or with conj you have to get to 90+. But once you get higher, you can buy higher level books from the mages in the college. They won't show you the books until you reach those levels.

Buuuut, if you can figure out the recipes, you can create your own books. It's like Void Salt, Ruined Book, Deathbell, and something else, and you can make the Storm Acro summon. You can make other books and items, but you have to figure out the recipes... and you make them in the midden, under the mage college, at the round shrine place with the "collection box".

Im going to work on getting my Conj skill up to 90, so I can start summoning the real good things :)

Im afraid of playing Skyrim, I fear I would prefer it to real life.

BTW guys, how leveling works on this game? Like Morrowind or Oblivion that, after some points gained across your skill set, ask you to sleep?

I dont want to be a 50 lvlv character that's high on smithing and speech but a wimp with combat.

    • On the topic of being locked out of a service. Recently two different friends of mine got locked out of their Google accounts. Both were hack attempts and one of them is waiting 30 days before he can get back in. He had backup codes and MFA but not a passkey. It was a browser token hack. Anyhow he has to wait 30 days for the dispute or whatever to end. The other person only had a password and is screwed losing all of the email, docs and years of photos. Google won’t help her at all. Her fault because she had no backup/recovery setup. Enable passkeys if possible. Also do NOT use browser based password managers. If using a cloud service make sure it is one you can fully sync to one of your devices so you can back it up. Like a PC or Mac with some backup drive plugged into it. Google is the worst to use IMHO. You can’t sync your photos at all. You have to use the “Take Out” service which is manual and takes days. That service strips the meta data from your photos. Also Google Docs synced to a device are useless without a Google accounts. MS Office/Libre Office is not going to open a link to a Google doc to a dead account.
    • Why you need to take back control of your synced passwords and how to go about doing that by Paul Hill Credit: Pixabay Last month, when Google decided to introduce daily and weekly caps for Gemini, it reignited an anxiety of mine, that you can’t really depend on service providers to maintain features forever, and it got me looking into free software (as in freedom) in other areas too. One app I quickly came across was KeePassXC on desktop and KeePassDX on Android as an alternative to password manager lock-in within the Chrome or Firefox ecosystems. I personally like to switch around with browsers, and using either password manager is inconvenient, so something like KeePassXC was interesting to me. The main issue with it now is syncing; I was not sure how to do that. After a bit of research, I came across Syncthing, a tool I was vaguely familiar with but had never used because it seemed complicated. However, I was completely wrong, and honestly, I think everyone should use it if they use multiple devices. It essentially lets you share folders peer to peer across all of your devices, no cloud services that you don’t control necessary! And it was fairly simple to set up, if not a bit clunky. Since setting it up, I’ve also started using Syncthing to back up other apps too, so don’t think it’s limited to just saving password databases. You can use it for pretty much anything you use Dropbox or Google Drive for. Before continuing to talk about those apps a bit more, let’s walk back a bit and talk about browser sync. Ever since the late 2000s and early 2010s, really, since we have been using smartphones, browser sync has been a necessity of life. I don’t know about you, but I have hundreds of passwords saved. For the most part, they’re all unique, so I don’t remember them and rely on software to manage them for me. Until recently, I’ve relied on password managers in Chrome and Firefox, but what I always found annoying was that it can be hard to transfer them between browsers. Sure, on Windows it is simple enough, but on Linux, exporting bookmarks has been temperamental. It works OK nowadays, but not too long ago, Chrome required you to enable exporting passwords in chrome://flags. The situation is even worse on mobile; there is no exporting or importing of passwords of any kind. You literally have to do it on a desktop, which is incredibly annoying in our mobile-first world. Sync also lets us take out bookmarks, history, tabs, and autofill data easily. To enable sync, it’s just a matter of signing into the browser once, and it handles the rest. It’s nice and easy. Obviously, all this has some issues, including those I’ve outlined above about it being hard to transfer data between browsers, but also things such as account suspension, lost account passwords, and other lock-in mechanisms, such as passkeys, being tied to a specific browser. On a sidenote, I have just removed all of my passkeys because they can make it harder to move browsers. I think the biggest threat to your synced passwords, especially if doing this with Google, is having your account suspended. I don’t ever expect mine to be suspended, but you do hear horror stories on Reddit where people lose access to their Google accounts. Imagine if you have hundreds of passwords, then suddenly lose access to them because Google froze your account, what would you do? So yes, it can be nice to use these syncing services for their convenience, but they also have risks. You may have seen me going on about free software quite a bit in my editorials. It’s essentially a concept championed by the Free Software Foundation. It’s software under particular licenses that grant you four freedoms: run the program for any purpose (0), study and change the source code (1), redistribute copies to others (2), and the freedom to distribute modified copies to others (3). For example, if there is an app I use and one day it gets abandoned by the developer, I can keep running it or even clone the software and continue developing it. Look at the myriad of cool services Google has run over the years before killing them. You can’t take the source code for those because they are proprietary, for the most part. Both KeePassXC and Syncthing are free software, so I get the freedoms listed above. In my use case where I’m syncing a database full of my passwords, I also get proper ownership over my data, there is no losing access to the database due to a frozen account, I can access the code of the tools I’m using, and I can get support from real people online if I run into issues, rather than having to consult a vague help page from an opaque company. With the KeePassXC password manager, you create a .kdbx file, which is what will be synced between devices. KeePassXC has cross-platform apps and also has browser extensions so that the browser can fetch passwords from the database once it is unlocked. Meanwhile, Syncthing is a peer-to-peer file sync tool where you can select folders to sync between your devices. Just pop files in the folders you choose, and then they will be available across your other devices whenever they come online. Syncthing is resilient as it works over both LAN and the internet and only ever sends content between your devices, never to a third-party server somewhere else. By combining these two pieces of software, you can essentially replicate the browser sync functionality. I have had a weird, conflicting issue where a new file is appearing, but it doesn’t seem to be impacting my main password database, which is updating between devices just fine. If you want to get a setup similar to what I have, you will need to go here to download KeePassXC for your computer. Once you have that, you will need to download your passwords from your web browser to a CSV file. In Chrome, you can type chrome://password-manager/settings into the URL bar, and you should see an option to download your passwords under Export Passwords. This will give you the CSV file you need for importing into KeePassXC. If you use a different browser, just use a search engine and type “browser-name export passwords” and muddle along. In KeePassXC, you’ll want to press Import File from the home screen, select the CSV file, and create a new database from it. On one of the screens of the wizard, there will be a Title field with a drop-down selected to none. Change this to Title and continue. You’ll select a name for the database, the encryption level (the defaults are fine), and then you will pick a password. I would choose four unrelated words that are easy for you to remember, as you’ll be typing them fairly often to access your passwords. When you have all your passwords in your new database, you will want to set up the browser extension so that your browser can fetch passwords from KeePassXC. Rather than explain how to do that here, refer to KeePassXC’s guide on how to set it up properly. Once you’ve got that set up, you want to install KeePassDX on Android. You can grab it on the F-Droid store and the Google Play Store. For iPhone users, there are other .kdbx-supporting apps, but I haven’t tried any of them, so have a look around and use what suits you. Once you have that done, you will want to install Syncthing on your computer and find a third-party app for your mobile device. On Android, I use an app called BasicSync; there are also options for iOS, but again, I’ve not tried these. Once you’ve got SyncThing, you’ll want to set it up and connect all of your devices together and share a folder between your gadgets. PCWorld has a good tutorial on setting up a synchronized file between your devices using SyncThing. Once you’ve set it up, congrats, you’ll never have to touch that stuff again except for adding or removing devices. I’ll be honest, I didn’t particularly like setting up Syncthing. It didn’t take me a massive amount of time, but I think I had to check online because I found it a bit confusing. That said, I’ve had it running for several weeks now and never need to touch the Syncthing settings, so that’s very nice. I also mentioned a conflicting file. I’m not sure why this is appearing, but the main .kdbx file seems to be updating and syncing just fine. What’s nice is that both KeePassXC and Syncthing are free software, so they won’t just vanish one day; you can take the code and fork the project or use a range of alternative implementations that others have made. It’s also nice that it works over LAN, so even if your ISP is having problems, your passwords will still sync. One area where you will want to be a bit more careful with this setup is if you only have one device. I am OK because I have a computer and two phones, all synced up. If you just have one device, you will probably want to store a backup of your .kdbx file somewhere else. Obviously, you’ll also want to remember your password really well, too. If you get locked out, it's game over. Overall, if you want to take back control of your computing from big tech, taking control of your passwords is an important part of this. You don’t need to immediately clear out your browser’s password manager; try running KeePassXC and the password manager concurrently for a while to see if you run into any problems. If you do try this out, let us know some other creative ways to use Syncthing. I haven’t really come up with a solution about what to do with my bookmarks, for example.
    • If the price was a dollar, someone would complain "Why isn't it free?" If it was free, someone would complain they weren't being paid to play it.
    • That lens of history will burn if you hold it at the right angle... Warn users too late: Shame, Microsoft! That extremely minor update to an obscure Control Panel widget required 2 years of warning. Warn users too early: Shame, Microsoft! We've got better things to do. Pipeline and process be damned, we'll just always be disappointed, eh?
    • Microsoft Paint used to be my favorite Windows app as a kid, and it's still pretty good by Usama Jawad I have been using Windows since the early 2000s, when I was around 10 years old or so. I vaguely remember playing around with Windows 98 and Windows 2000, but that may have been on school PCs which had old operating systems installed. My main OS on the home PC, and the one I recall spending most time with, was Windows XP. At that time, I used the home PC to create Word and PowerPoint documents for school, but a lot of the time, I simply used it to play games. My dad would bring game discs which we would try and install on the PC, sometimes unsuccessfully, and sometimes, we would rely on flash games in the browser, like Bubble Trouble on Miniclip. However, the problem with the latter approach was the internet speed. On a good day, our dial-up internet would offer us speeds of 56 kbps, but on most days, it was closer to 33 kbps. This did not facilitate online gaming as I would often have to wait minutes for a game to load or "draw" on the screen, and trying to download pirated games wasn't simple either. I remember getting tired of waiting for online games to load and just downloading simulator games from the Big Fish Games website instead, only to be disappointed after finding out that I was just being given access to trial versions of the title, and I needed to fork out money to pay for the full version. All of this is to say that it wasn't very easy to find entertainment options on the home PC when I was a kid, due to a number of reasons, mostly outside of my control. This situation pushed me towards a rather unconventional ally: Microsoft Paint. Whenever the internet wasn't working as good as I expected, I would simply spin up Paint and draw complete rubbish on the canvas. Of course, that wasn't always the intention, but it usually happened when I messed up drawing a straight line or something, and then I would give up on that particular piece and simply draw a random collection of objects. Microsoft Paint was extremely accessible and easy to use. Even if you weren't an artist, you could quickly understand the tools at your disposal and how to leverage them on a canvas. The absolute breadth on offer ensured that each painting was truly unique, as you could utilize various combinations of tools like the pencil, paint, spray paint, and more to truly personalize your creation. Since I wasn't particularly good at drawing both on digital screen or a physical screen, I remember that my main style of art would be to insert a bunch of randomly intersecting lines and then fill them with random colors through the paint can. I have trying to replicate that art style in the latest version of Paint below, and as you can see, it's truly Pablo Picasso-esque. The human imagination truly knows no bounds Microsoft Paint kept me occupied for hours and was my best friend when video games on the home PC were inaccessible for one reason or the other. There was no academic or professional reason for which I would need to use Paint, but I still loved using it in my personal time, even if what I created wasn't worth being shown to anyone. It was simply fun. Fast-forward to today, and the situation is mostly the same. Now that I am almost 29 years old, and I still have no reason to use Microsoft Paint in a professional capacity. In fact, I don't even use it in a personal capacity, except to dabble with it from time to time, just to see if core functionalities are still intact. And I'm happy to say that I think Microsoft Paint still offers the same accessibility and inviting experience that it did to me a couple of decades ago, even though its UX has been refreshed and it's been integrated with Copilot features. Interestingly, things could have been a lot different, had Microsoft had its way. Microsoft Paint was marked for deprecation with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update in 2017, and even began displaying a product retirement alert, urging customers to shift to Paint 3D instead. Fortunately, after consumer backlash, Microsoft reversed course on this decision, and Paint continues to be a native app inside Windows installations that can also be updated quite frequently through the Microsoft Store. Instead, Paint 3D ended up on the chopping block, which is for the better, I think. I have intermittently played around with Microsoft's refreshed Paint experience in the past few years, and I do think it has received worthwhile upgrades. the UI and the UX has been modernized while retaining core functionality, and the app is still fairly easy to use. It doesn't meet any of my use-cases, but I've never really had any use-cases ever, as described previously. Of course, the elephant in the room is the Copilot integration. Personally, I believe that this is one place where Copilot does make sense, environmental concerns aside. I know that a lot of creatives use AI to generate images, and while some may be using professional alternatives, Paint still offers a decent casual experience, with the power of Copilot. Of course, you do need to have a valid Microsoft 365 Copilot license and available credits to use it, but even if you don't, you still get the big Copilot button in the toolbar, unfortunately. All in all, I am glad that Microsoft Paint continues to be a native feature in Windows 11, and a piece of software that has evolved to meet modern needs without cutting off its own roots. It's just an iconic piece of Windows history that was an essential part of my childhood, and while I don't use it anymore, I'm just glad it is still there.
