Disable waiting for background programs to close?

Recommended Posts

1. Open the Start Menu.

2. In the search box, type regedit and press Enter

3. In regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

4. In the right pane, right click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and click on Modify

5. Type in a number between 2000-20000 (2-20 seconds) and click on OK. (See screenshot below)

NOTE: The default time is 12000. I use 2000 (2 seconds) and have not had any problems. Your experience may vary.

6. Close regedit.

NOTE: If you have problems with programs from your computer shutting down to quickly, then repeat the above steps and increase the time (step 5) a bit.

I did that before still not disable it.

also use this reg still not fix it:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]

"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="1000"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl]

"AutoReboot"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]

"WaitToKillAppTimeout"="1000"

"HungAppTimeout"="1000"

"AutoEndTasks"="1"

Your values are too low and your services/apps take longer than 1 second to close on your computer which is why Windows shows you that screen. Try making it much longer and you'll see that you no longer get that screen.

This is a known issue in Windows 7 and Microsoft are, apparently, going to fix this in SP1.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]

"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="12000"

The above is what mine is set to and it still shows up!!!

the safest settings if you want to change them is to set them at 5000=5 seconds. 1 second is way too low and problems may arise but the default settings should be sufficient.

I am very glad to hear that Microsoft is fixing this in SP1 for Windows 7 :)

I also get this screen all the time when restarting my computer and it really sucks!

The windows 7 users i have seen have not had that screen appear for more than a few seconds so it must be something that your running.

Usually it's WLM, Skype and Steam that cause the issue as the don't shutdown fast enough.

There is a hot-fix for this issue - and you can request the download here (click "View and request hotfix downloads" under the article's title) :)

Thanks for that, it worked, not quite sure why my machine had this issue but it's fixed now, RYU81 you need to click the word here in futurix's post and request it as it's not available to everyone.
