[Official] Google Cr-48 Hardware Discussion

Recommended Posts

After getting Neobond's permission, I created this thread for discussion of the Cr-48 hardware, itself. The previous thread ( https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/959472-chromeos-laptops/page__view__getnewpost ) turned into a a discussion of the delivery of the laptops and I was hoping for a place for people to discuss the hardware and such.

I, personally, love the design of the unit. I've always thought 13" is the perfect size for on the go computing, so seeing a 12" screen on a netbook, a market dominated by 10" screens, is a nice change of pace. The simple, logo free matte black design hit's all the right cues, for me, and I'm in love with the keyboard. I was also surprised by the sound quality of the unit. Much less tinny than other laptops/netbooks I've ever used.

The only downside to this unit would probably be the screen. It just seems to lack crispness and back light bleeding is prevalent when the screen has a lot of black coloring on it.

Here are the specs i have gathered so far.

Intel Atom Processor N455 1.66GHz 512K Cache

Tripod Motherboard MARIO – 6050A240910 – MB – A03

Hynix 2GB DDR3 1Rx8 PC3 – 10600S Ram

Intel CG82NM10 PCH

ITE IT8500E Flash ROM

SanDisk sdsa4dh-016G 16GB SATA SSD

Qualcomm Gobi2000 PCI Express Mini Card

AzureWave 802.11 a/b/g/n PCI-E Half MiniCard

Atheros AR5BBU12 Bluetooth V2.1 EDR

(updated had a typo error)

^ i meant to ask, can you remove the ssd?

Yes, it uses a standard SATA connection however, it is much smaller than a standard notebook Hard drive.

As far as Graphics i have yet to figure that out.

The GPU is a GMA 3150 that is built into the Pineview processor. There must be some variation in the hardware as mine has an Atom N455 and a 16GB SSD

How'd you figure this info out? Open up the case or software?

That GPU will make it a lousy candidate (for now) for making it a hackintosh. That's the same one that is in the newest models of the Dell mini 10 (the 1012 model, like mine), and so far there has not been a lot of advancement in getting that GPU working right with acceleration. Otherwise pretty nice specs. Here's hoping that one shows up at my door soon!

Oh, and there is an easy way to find out the resolution without any extra software: http://www.pageresource.com/jscript/jscreen.htm Click on the link in the text there and it will tell you the resolution, should work in Chrome on that netbook.

It's 1280x800

OK, is that confirmed, or just repeating the speculation that bangbang023 posted earlier? That seems to be a very odd resolution, even for a 12" display. It is narrower but taller than the 1366x768 on my Dell mini 10.

edit: nevermind, that works out to a 16:10 screen, so not very odd at all.

i love the keyboard .. i just don't know what to do with the thing lol other than surfing the net im stumped

Right now it's my "laying down and browsing the web before going to bed" computer. Better than sitting up at my desktop while trying to get tired.

    • Thanks free chatgpt. The issue is, with most browsers, is you shouldn't need tools to remove anything. It is the whole point of extensions. The only browser so far to man up and be honest that it needs money to function is Brave Origin. Don't like the monetisation and code bloat, have a clean browser for a one off $ charge. Firefox used to be that, but now it is a code bloat browser, hiding AI.
