The BEST Duplicated File Finder for Windows 7?

Question

I know I have a TONS of Redundant files on my computer, and need to delete them.

But I don't know a good redundant file finder/remover... so can you help me?

I loved the old Cleansweep in the old days that do this, now days this kind of software is not widely popular at all. So what's a good one?

Do any of those work for pictures? Like... same picture (unmodified) but in multiple folders or with a different file name?

These programs search for 100% exact files. That's fine if the pictures themselves are exact copies, but if even a single bit in the picture has changed, they will not be marked as duplicates.

There are programs made especially for photos, which can find duplicates even if the photos are slightly modified, resized, etc. VisiPics is a good one.

I noticed the second program is SO slow at looking for folders compared to the 1st one which was very fast... but will it find more Duplicated files than the 1st program...?

UPDATE: The 1st one is conservative look for less, the 2nd one is better as it will look for DLLs and Exes, picture etc.

I have quite A LOT in C:\Windows\winsxs I am hesitate to remove, but some other places are easier decisions.

I believe it said 6GB can be freed

I'm actually interested in this as well, but does it only search for standard image types such as .jpg, or will it also recognize formats such as .NEF (raw) image files?

I think VisiPics only supports standard formats. You might try XnView instead, it's an image viewer which supports hundreds of formats and can search for duplicate images. Open the thumbnails view, select a folder and click Tools -> Find similar files.

To the OP, deleting files in the Windows folder is dangerous. You're probably best leaving those files alone.

No I did not remove any files from winsxs... I know they are important files...

If you don't mind losing the ability to uninstall Service Pack 1 you can run (as administrator)

dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

to reduce the size of winsxs

Hmm?

Haven't used any type program for finding duplicates since about Windows 98!

I tried that CleanSweep way back then and that thing is/was a TOTAL POS!! One of the most dangerous programs you could've ever used, unless you were TRYING to wreck your machine!

    • If you don’t get lucky with Valve’s Steam Machine reservation system, you can make your own Steam Machine instead. Valve says that “starting with the SteamOS 3.8 release, you can put together your own Steam Machine using whatever PC parts you want.” SteamOS 3.8.10 launched last week with a slew of updates, including “improved compatibility with recent Intel and AMD platforms.” Alongside that improved compatibility, Valve is giving gamers the green light to install SteamOS on their own desktops. In an interview with The Verge, Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais said Valve has been “rolling out improvements to [SteamOS] so it’s more compatible with desktop hardware,” including eventual support for Nvidia graphics. Griffais says Valve has “a growing team” working on Nvidia driver support for SteamOS, adding, “We’re collaborating with Nvidia very closely.” While he mentioned that Nvidia support might not come this year, Griffais emphasized that “it’s certainly something that we’re working on in the background.”     Subscription not needed: https://archive.fo/Tssfc Subscription needed: https://www.theverge.com/games/953411/valve-steamos-desktop-nvidia

    • I know an idiot at work who is "Director for innovation projects" and inevitably has been tasked with following up on this whole trend of "AI and its work applicability". He recently sent out a survey on the topic, for the workforce to disclose their usage and attitudes towards AI. The survey was badly, sloppily typed out, the questions and answers (when multiple choices) were loosely correlated and, all and all, it would already be miserable in the times of MS Office Autocorrect alone. Then, I had AI responding to it all (on the open-ended questions) with beautiful, to-the-point prose after I provided it with minor but proper guidance, taking me under 10 minutes. All this to say that I am sure that if AI comes to replace someone, it will still be me, and the other idiot will still stay.
    • Man, the memories.
    • Call me when you can say, "Find all duplicate rows with duplicate email addresses and move the duplicate rows to a new sheet", and Copilot can execute that and not give you VBScript to write to do it. If anyone thinks AI isn't in its infancy and the bubble is about to burst, try to do anything meaningful in Excel with Copilot and you will realize AI hasn't even made it to kindergarten in most use cases yet.
