What a damn shame. It's 2011 and they decided to use an engine that's supposedly designed for MMO games. I like to check out the latest and greatest in terms of 3D graphics technologies and I've never even heard of HeroEngine. The most likely explanation for the poor performance is the engine. It probably isn't well-optimized and I hope it gets better in the final release. As you said though, it's sad that a game from 2004 has better water effects than one that will be released in 2011.

Yeah I agree 100%.

I am going to be playing the beta this weekend so I hope they have fixed a lot of the issues I was having ...

It's sad though because I really want this game to be good.

The water effects in wow were releaced in 2011 and using an experamental DX11 or 10 i forget

Just read about the engine, and i will agree, single thread is kinda outdated with the mass # of systems that are at least dual core.

Ill see how it is when i get in

yeap NDA is gone bye bye, and invites are going out today for everyone for this weekends last Beta test.. Anyone who registered on the site and said they wanted to be part of the beta before 11-11-11 "should" get an invite for this weekends test.

If you don't see it in your inbox by tonight, then make sure you check with some other sites who are giving out beta keys.. Keep in mind its a 20+gig download so get started early.

True - it's a monster.

I got an invite via the Team Razer Facebook page, and I'll be dual-testing (both 7 and the WDP) as I have been for all my games.

Be warned - this *is* an Origin-based title (in short, Origin is a requirement); however, if you have purchased any EA title via Origin, you should have no real problems.

The water FX are likely based on tessellation (DX11). Also, Coruscant should be interesting to explore.

Origin is not required to PLAY the game, only required if you buy through Origiin Online ( as its how you will download the game and pay the $60, subscriptions are handled outside origin, same as patches and everything else.

I currently do not have origin on my computer, i have SWTOR, it doesnt use Origin.

Origin is not required, it is only required of you buy it through Origin ( obviously )! And it is only required for initial order/shipping, or initial order and download ( digital copy )

From what I played in the beta everything is good enough for me. Story and voice acting is what I care about over something stupid like water effects. The combat at least at the lower levels felt great and I'm looking forward to more. Still plan to get my CE.

Friday at 4PM GMT, which is great as I come back from work 4:30PM \o/

Same here for the start time but I don't finish work until 6pm :( I am so looking forward to this!! I've got pretty much all day saturday free (except a trip to the pub at lunchtime) so I'm going to smash it :D

If you've seen the water you'd know it's not based on anything other than a sheet of what appears to be water like textures, moving in random patterns, lol.

personally I thought the water looked fine.. Nothing amazing but it looked nice.. I also loved how you see splashes when you are at a place where its raining as well as changes to the footsteps sounds.

I do wish they were doing the day/night changes, but they are saying that "could" come later. I mean honestly the IP of Star Wars alone is going to make a ton of people buy it.. What are we at now 800,000+ pre-orders? You know 80% of that is because its star wars.

And WOW didn't look that great when it came out. I mean when I Alpha tested wow I thought, OMG what is this cartoon looking crap, but we all have come to love what it has done and it took them what 7 years before they really even updated the water? Give it time.

i agree, main selling point is star wars, but EA/bioware could pull a Cryptic and just destroy it like they did with StarTrek Online, didnt even take a month for that to happen. no mater the brand, there can be a way for them to just ruin it.

oh, and i got in for the Friday 25th test, so i loaded BootCamp on my MBP so i can play at work :)

I'm not just complaining about the water though... I could care less (even though it does look dated). I just care about the poorly optimized graphics engine.

I will let you know if there are any improvements since the last beta build.

The difference being that SWTOR now runs much worse than WoW did when it came out on similar hardware and looks pretty average at best. Textures in many places are simply bad and character animation/fluidity leaves a lot to be desired for.

SWTOR suffers from "glide" effect that annoys me greatly, ie. characters tend to "glide" on surfaces rather than look like they're actually interacting with the environment.

    • Remarkably based article from Garter - apparently there IS someone working there that actually understands mainframe systems.
