It's NOT off topic, it's very much to do with owning an iPhone, iTunes was one of the reasons I looked into upgrading to an Android phone

Being tied to using iTunes really annoyed me, so much so I took the iPhone back and got a HTC with Android and found I preferred it by a long mile.

Jailbreaking the iPhone is a good start, but seems crazy to invalidate a warranty of an expensive item just to get it up to the standard of competitive phones.

Heya guys,

I am, as many of you might know, a kind of person who likes to prepare and dive into it a lot when I buy new gadgets for example.

I will make an order of an iPhone 4 32GB next week (Friday) and it will probably be in my hands within the next 9 to 11 days. :D

1) I've never used an iOS device for longer than a trip to an Apple Store/tech store.

2) I will jailbreak it (MOST likely).

Anyhow, I wanted to prepare myself a bit this time again and create a thread to ask for experiences (I found Google to often not give me the answers to the extend I want/need) but also to get videos you recommend, regarding the iPhone 4... Addons / accessoires, app reviews, tricks and tips, etc...

Also there's maybe stuff you think of after a while of using it:

• If I had done XYZ this or that way I would now not need to restore
• If I had tried app B in the first place I would not now lose app A's content due to switching apps for the same purpose
• etc...you get the idea...

There are two specific questions I have though:

• What have you noticed after using your iPhone/iPod touch when owning it after a certain time compared to the quicky experience in the shop? (positive/neutral/negative?)
• What about warranty and Jailbreaks? What's the real risks? When converting a jb to non-jb, is it checkable for Apple?

What I yet have to buy:

• Cheap AV cord to connect my iPhone to the (SD)TV (I know about the limitations, I am however going to jailbreak, so TV-Out will do the trick)
• Cheap cable for HDTV out there? Apple's a bit too pricey imho. HDMI much prefered, composite is okay
• Good dock with speakers (post in dedicated thread regarding this cheers :))
• Also: Game Pads for the iPhone?

I also bought some stuff to be prepared:

• SwitchEasy Nude Case (lovely purple :p) (is its screen protector it comes with okay or would you say a Vikuiti or other high-quality s/p's are something to look into?)
• Wicked Bump Dock (a dock with which you can connect bumper/case protected iPhones, too!)

But obviously his mind is set. He will buy an iPhone and may, like me and others, have not have any problems with iTunes.

How about synching?

I'm waiting for my iPhone a little longer I guess, but I might be able to go rage about the delay although I got promised to have it shipped soon...

So maybe I'll pick one up at a T-Mobile shop...

Problem is: I wanna activate and synch my iPhone already (to get the apps etc...) at another place (won't be my iMac with which I wanna synch...)

Could I basically plug the iPhone into my fianc?'s PC and activate from there and drop some music and apps from there on to my iPhone, but have it synch with my iMac later on without resetting to factory settings or whatnot?

Just simply transitioning over?

Someone must explain the synching to me... :s

What if I just activate on my girlfriend's computer and get the apps I want from the App Store?

I already purchased a bunch, I'd like to try them out this weekend (if possible) so I'd just download them over the air from the Store...

I guess I can redownload directly to my iPhone, too, right? So I'll have that list of purchased Apps that will do the trick.

When I then synch with my Mac (never with the PC of my girlfriend), will it then melt together nicely? No data loss (app settings, saved games, the apps themselves, ...)?

Oh yeah that would work, I guess. :-)

But it just aswell could not... :whistle: you never know... As great as syncing with iTunes is, it's pretty much unforseeable if you don't stick to one computer.

I never had such problems, since I simply always synced my iPhones with one computer only. And even when getting a new computer, activating it and copying the entire iTunes-Folder did the trick... But two different ones and syncing and activating on one and on another... I am not sure... so no promises. ;)

I cant answer all your questions but I will try.

Jailbreak for the iPhone 4 isnt available yet. You can go semi-untethered then go to unthethered now with the latest version of redsnow(its the beta), ive done this on my dads 4. If you have experience or know how to follow instructions, its a fairly easy process. The only thing about this jailbreak is that you have to first semi-untethered it then untethered it. Usually it goes straight to untethered but with OS 4.2 they(the jb devs, be it dev team, chronic, etc) havent found the best way to jb the OS yet. I believe they might as well wait since OS 4.3 will be out soon.

iTunes, while it can be a pain in the ass on windows, you kind of live with it because you really dont use it much. But I know for a fact you have a mac so your fine because for some god damn reason(im not surprised) iTunes runs AMAZING ON MAC.

But I live with it because I promised myself i would do weekly backups(i install a lot of beta apps) which causes your phone to do weird things) but Ive backed up maybe 4 months ago. Actually, im planning on doing a backup today, but ALWAYS keep a backup if your gonna jailbreak BECAUSE if your phone does act weird or go into a reboot loop(happens very often if you **** with the wrong files or the app you just installed uses mobile substrate or some kind of system file / hook) youll be glad you had a backup.

Ive went through a day that I had to reset my phone 4 times before it finally booted, and then i had to catch it right as it was going to reboot, ssh within those 15 seconds and delete the bad app file that was left over, or I was seriously screwed.

So there will be times that you wanna pull your hair out, unless you keep a backup. As far as im concerned, since you have a mac, keep a back up everyday day or two or whenever you sync it.

Now onto hardware. Ive owned my 3GS since release date, which I believe was June 15th of 09. I use my phone A LOT everyday. My battery in the beginning lasted around 9 hours with wifi, email, browsing, texting, games, apps, etc. Now its down to about 8. I would say 7 1/2 averagly, so dont believe people say your battery will die. Its just the matter of how you charge. I know a lot of people who quick charge ALL THE DAMN TIME, be it iPhone or iPod, thats what kills the battery. As long as you do a full charge once a month, or every time you plug it in(i charge mine every night over night), your battery should be fine.

Im waiting for iPhone 5 since thatll be exactly 2 years and Ill need an upgrade. I dont NEED to have one, but I would love one because of the shape off the iPhone 4 and just the power of it. If it wasnt for the nice rectangle flat design / better processor, I would wait longer, but I love using my dads 4, so ill be getting a iPhone 5.

iTunes in Windows 7 64bit mode isn't that good at all. I've got the 980X with 12 Gb of ram and an ssd and it still is sluggish, especially when viewing iphone. It's just not that great.

I've tried a few cases out, and overall I found the bumper to be the best. If you don't put a rear screen protector on, be sure take your case off for regular cleanings. Since the back is glass, dirt can get stuck behind your case and slowly scratch the glass. I've found that the Official Apple bumper + Zagg Invisible shield is a great combo (though the quality of the Zagg Invisible shield has diminished greatly since I got my 3G two years ago. A simular front + back protector should work too.

The screen is gorgeous. It makes all your other gadgets look terrible. When ever i used my old 3G it takes me a good 15 minutes to stop seeing the pixels.

1. If you fill up your storage, the phone will slow down a lot.

2. Apps will crash, and you may have to reboot your phone once in a while to get good performance out of it.

3. If you don't have a strong signal in your area, the "death grip" is a real concern, though not with a case. (I prefer holding the rubber/plastic bumper edges then the metal antenna for most usage.)

4. Don't expect to get 100% of the new features announced for the next phone that your phone may otherwise be able to do physically. Sometimes it's something like multitasking not coming to the 3G (which you can do through jailbreaking, and it's horrible). Other times it's as asanine as the 3GS not getting the extra (somewhat unusable) text ringtones.

I never output any video or audio through my iphone when I am at home, so I can't help you there. Luckily your buying the best supported phone in existence, so you should be able to get something perfect for your price range.

iTunes is my music manager of choice... Been using it since version 4 or so... Whenever I tried something else I got crazy... iTunes does all the things I want and is perfect for huge Mac music libraries... Works good on W7 on my Mac, too... :)

How do I know what to delete?

As far as game center goes, I dont believe so, and if there isnt, you should start one haha. But I havent used gamecenter much. I should do that, i keep clicking "not now" ha.

If you want a good strong powerful case(which they make in pink if thats cute enough for you ;)) look at otterbox defender. GREATEST CASE EVER.

Ive dropped my 3GS many times(not on purpose, but the reassurance of the case helped me be less anally careful about it), ran it over once(total accident but nothing happened), dropped it in little snow water puddles that I grabbed right away and nothing. The rubber on it actually keeps most of the water out because its covers the important stuff like charging port and headphone jack. Now my speakers are open because I peeled my filters off, but if it wasnt for that and my speakers did get wet, i wouldnt be too worried because the water damage sticker is in the headphone jack. So what I would do would be drop the phone in rice, let it capture all the water and moisture, make sure its all dry down there by the speaker and mic, and take it too apple and get another one. I helped a friend do this and they replaced it instantly because the water damage sticker wasnt wet XD. You want to know why its not wet? Because it was covered by a rubber plug by the case ha.

But, I honestly love the case and customer service. RMA'ing the case is easy. You email, within 24 hours, usually a few hours during business hours youll get an email with a RMA number, tracking number. You get a new case within 3 days via USPS First Class Mail(as far as the US goes). But they are a fantastic company to deal with.

1. Yes. Basically semi-tethered means, if you want to load cydia, you have to boot into phone while "rejailbreaking" it. Thats if your battery dies, or if you reboot your phone. If you dont let your battery die, a reboot for the iPhone is very rare. Some cydia apps do it, some did. I know one of them was MyWi. It made me reboot every god damn time because once you open it, theres no way of "closing" the app. So what I did was use it, turn off MyWi, open multi tray dock, and close it that way. Apparently this still isnt good as its hooked into the system so it needs to unhook and rehook. The devs have fixed it and made it just respring(think of windows explorer crashing and reopening) so that the hook gets released and you can use it again.

So you want untethered lol. My 3GS is a older model(launch) so it can be untethered easily. So im on 4.2 untethered enjoying airplay, only real reason i upgraded to 4.2 was airplay.. GF's still on 4.1 on her iPod Touch 4th Gen because I havent had the time to jb it untethered properly. She uses it way too much lol. Also because 4.1 was good enough. 4.2 added Airplay and AirPrint but since AirPrint was originally changed from all printers to specific, I said **** it and didnt upgrade her. No regret.

2. iTunes on My PC on windows 7 doesnt run as smooth as my GF's macbook. But I do use iTunes to manage my music/movies/tv shows. Works great for my AppleTV.

3. Beta apps via Cydia yes. You know when its a beta app, you have to add bigboss's(major repo for iPhone) beta repo for beta apps. Theres a few more, but those I will not share on neowin.

4. 15 secs from the minute you SSH + the springboard comes up to the time it resprings / reboots and you get kicked. That timeframe is very limited but ive learned to use winscp + copy and paste very well. Its easy once you get use to it, but a bitch because once you hear the springboard "spring" noise, thats exactly when your phone is online, still stuck at the boot logo(apple logo), but its lagging / stuck at boot so bad that itll spring way before you see it, which is why you get 15 seconds because most people start when they see springboard. In reality you get like maybe 30 seconds, but ive done it in 10. Once you get use to it, in winscp, youll have your iphone saved as a connection. Then you simply go "connect > copy paste > find bad app file quick > delete". Then let the phone reboot and when it comes back, itll spring and load up default processes. The easy way is, finding the source file deleting it and then deleting the plist entry. Thats my way because i can find the file fastest then edit the plist, change it, rename it back and boom. SO I do my way. The common way which is up above, is easy, but at the same time for me its time consuming, so its down to what you want. But basically the app adds a plist entry, which tells springboard to open said process, and the said process is bad. So you remove it, and theres no reference. But what they dont tell you is, you should also remove the bad leftovers of the app and not just the plist entry. Its like uninstalling a program but not deleting the folder it created. Usually I uninstall a program and right away check if it still left anything over.

You did bring up a good question though. IPA's are easy to work with. Since there an app, if they dont work right, they just crash most of the time. Well in my experience, for that, you can delete them anytime, they dont get you stuck at boot. Well custom downloaded / installed IPA's dont.

5. Syncing, is when your adding music/movies/apps/etc to your phone from your macbook.

Backing up is when you let iTunes create a direct backup of whatevers on your phone.

Now, by default iTunes does backup your phone everytime you sync it, but since youll be syncing it a lot(i assume), then you might want to set it on "Manual Backups". Because if you get on your computer, dock your phone and you just wanna add a song or something, undock it and go, youll be ****ed that its backing up, waiting, syncing, waiting, ok done. Backing up gets faster once you do it regurlarly on the same computer, but its still not as fast as "dock > sync > eject". Syncing is always the fastest. The GF is a music library, so her 64gb iPod gets connected, sync'd and disconnected every day. She backs up once a week. She use to just let it backup, sync and then disconnect, but it took so long, so she realized "hmm maybe I should manual backup". She was just worried she would forget, so she didnt take my advice, but now she backs up every saturday and syncs everyday and its soo much faster.

6. Yes, a full charge is bringing it down below 10% and then full charging it. So connecting it and letting it charge over the time the icon shows up. general 3 hours. A full charge takes 2 hours, a quick charge(80%) takes roughly an hour, which is why people do it. But a FULL CHARGE takes 3 hours because 2 hours to let the battery completely get up to 100% and then to top it off. Docking it and undocking it like you speak would be quick charges, to completely charge it, you should charge it when you go to sleep. Now to give you an example, about 6 months ago, my battery got really bad. it went from 100% to 50% in an hour of just checking email and texting. I started getting fed up, but instead of going to apple(not that I dont like the apple store, just i wanted to keep my launch model 3GS for many reasons) I bought an app called "Battery Magic". Let me tell you, its ****ing magic. Ever since I got the app and ran my first "Full Charge Cycle". If I follow the app and do one every month, my battery stays very strong. But if I dont, after 2 months I can feel the wear on my battery. So for .99cents, best app EVER.

Now, to the Li-Ion comment, you have to understand, these batteries cant handle a max of 250 cycles of charging. A quick charge is half a cycle, you do it enough, you wear down your battery. A full charge is 100% + topping. But now, as im writing that, it doesnt make sense because My battery would of been bad a long time ago as I charge overnight all the time. So within 4 months I would of had a dead battery. So honestly I dont know the answer to this question, but what I do know is, the most quick charges you do, the worse it is on the battery open a full / constant charge.

7. Good job. Youll be very satisfied. Besides being confined by what apple wants you to have, its very easy interface to work with and seamless performance. I mean I love openess, and blah blah blah, but when it comes to my phone, I want it too work. I have an iPhone for that reason. My sister on the other hand has a Android. A Galaxy S ATT Samsung Captivate. Beautiful phone, somewhat great build(all plastic, feels like it too), but the performance sucks. Now the best thing is, you flash a stock google android rom and then root it. Bad thing is, regardless, she can go on the marketplace and download whatever she pleases. One thing I love about apple is they WERE thinking about the normal consumer. The normal consumer will download anything with a "cool" title and the word "free" next too it lol. Bad thing, with android being so popular and replacing the OS on almost every phone, that leaves it open to attacks like the porn SMS virus, Or the rick roll virus(not really a virus but sitll). On top of all this, these apps clearly say "Accessing: Phone, SMS, Network Connection, Phone Book" and people still add it. You have to understand, unless your a techie like us on this forum, android is not always good for the regular person, this is because the regular person doesnt pay attention to stuff that says "THIS APP WILL CALL YOUR CONTACTS and HOG ALL YOUR BANDWITH AND RAPE YOUR BILL". They just read the description and install. Now this isnt googles fault, or ATT's. Its the people's fault, but when your making an OS everyones gonna use, guess what, you HAVE to put the walls up. So limiting what goes on the APP store is a must. What google should do is, make it so you can select some kind of an option so the marketplace censors / hides all the bad **** for you(porn, apps requesting too much system access, etc). But thats another discussion.

I love android, but I can just grab my iPhone, back it up and update it all through one program, and jb it with another and done. Rooting, isnt the easiest. Its pretty easy but I hate how it works for the galaxy s. But I will say, Cynagoen Mod is the BEST. Once I got that on her phone, I loved it. No more stock ATT BS. No more apps opening and eating RAM that shouldnt be opened(att/spring/verizon navigator, ebay, etc). But again, I prefer iPhone JB to Android Root. On iPhone, JB is not a requirement 75% of the time, but on Android, if you want a GOOD phone, you almost always have to root. THIS is my opinion thou, so I dont wanna get shot by all the android users, its how I see it.

Sorry for going off topic with the last one there but it justs how I see things. I have nothing to say about windows 7 because I havent had a good day or 2 of use. Ive used it for like 15 mins, but that doesnt warrant a good opinion for me.

It would be extremely difficult to design a mobile OS in the way you are describing. The only reason you don't have those issues on iOS is because of Apple's walled garden, if a user chose to install a dodgy app from Cydia, the same could happen. As I say to users of Windows, you can design your way around everything except user stupidity. The same goes for Android. Yes, the occasional user may install a dodgy app, but the vast majority of users will have a decent experience with it, the issue is nothing like as bad as you make it out to be. In life, you pay a certain price for freedom, and you do in the world of tech as well. The fact that most users do not root their handsets also helps security, as applications are limited in what data they can access. If a user is too dumb to proverbially read the small print when they install a bad app from the Android market, that's their fault. When there have been known dodgy apps, Google have been pretty good at pulling them.

Using Android is not inherently risky.

It would be extremely difficult to design a mobile OS in the way you are describing. The only reason you don't have those issues on iOS is because of Apple's walled garden, if a user chose to install a dodgy app from Cydia, the same could happen. As I say to users of Windows, you can design your way around everything except user stupidity. The same goes for Android. Never said it was, but, when you jailbreak on iOS you asking for trouble basically because if people that dont know what they are doing, jb, then they ****ed up. There taking responsibility for possibly ****ing up there phone.

With android, yes google's good at pulling them, but they dont have restrictions like apple, so while apple keeps you in a walled garden, it also protects the normal consumer who has no knowledge of whats going on. They are just using there phone and going along with the change. Its like going onto a website and then all of a sudden you get the "my computer window"(explained by customers) and "my virus scan started scanning for viruses and told me there were a lot of viruses".

Its like REALLY? First thing I asked those customers, "do you have anti virus".... "no, thats why I thought it was weird my computer said that"... "then why did you click it"..."i dont know i thought it was a new feature of windows or something"(this was a recent case). REALLY PEOPLE?

Now thats how android is. People will download a bad app off the marketplace without realizing its accessing permissions for contacts and ****, and then spam them and the average person goes "no way, i just downloaded an app man, i didnt expect it to send spam to you".

There was a girl on my facebook, who actually downloaded a GAME, like a grid game(loosing the name right now), that without her realizing it, started sending texts to her contacts while she played the game. She figured this out after i texted her and helped her look at the app and it said "Network Usage, Access to Contacts, SMS Access" stuff like that. I was like "yeah contacts, wtf why?".

It wasnt like ads either telling you too play the game, it was just bull**** texts.

Now, something like that on AppStore, yeah not gonna happen, and that makes me very happy.

Regardless, im not saying android is bad. They both have pluses and minuses, but personally even with being a computer person, ill stick to iOS so my mobile usage is seamless unless I choose to **** it up by messing around with it. I do that enough with my desktop, laptop, xbox, ps3, wii, etc. No need to do it too my phone.

Only reason I ever jailbroke was backgrounder, themes and categories. Themes i dont care about anymore. Backgrounder has been replaced by the native multitasking which I love, and categories hasnt been fully replaced, but folders is an improvement. I just use to keep so many apps, now im minimized them down because of categories and folders, so If I wanted, I could get rid of categories. I only keep JB for MyWI. Thats the only thing.

Leaving the house now and going to the Gravis shop, where I'll redo my contract renewal (I cancelled it yesterday, because delivery time is insane with the mobile carriers...)

I'm on a Mac and iTunes runs extremely nice. In fact, iTunes integration is one of the reasons why I'm getting an iPhone. :)

One of the reasons I use an iPhone. iTunes is in fact one of my favorite apps on Mac OS X.
