Logitech Harmony 300i Remote

Recommended Posts

Hello folks,

Following on from my K750 solar keyboard review which proved popular here's another mini review but this time of the £29 Harmony 300i remote control. This will be a short review due to the nature of the hardware, it is just a remote after all and only so much can be said :p

As a starting note, my only experience with all in 1 remotes in the past has been one4all remotes where you punch in a bunch of codes for your device from the manual hoping that they programmed in the right button presets so this is a new venture for me especially the setup process.

First off some initial pics:

Ergonomics & Design

I found it to be a comfortable remote to hold and I have medium size hands although if I were to complain about comfort in other areas then it would probably be that in use it really is a two hand job because of the length (approx 22cm) of the remote and the thinness after the first quarter of the length from the bottom that it's a bit trickier to slide up and down with one hand to press different buttons without the aid of your second hand - I found that without using your second hand I was shimmying the remote up and down quite a bit when remote cruising.

It uses 2xAA batteries (Duracells are supplied) and uses a MiniUSB connector to connect to the PC. It would have been nice for it to have a rechargeable battery inside like other Logitech devices have now that are long lasting and can recharge off a MicroUSB connection or better yet, the new solar panel technology used in the K750 keyboard!

There is also a sensor at the bottom that's used to train the Harmony for specific remotes and finding model information, in my case it will be used for the Samsung SkyHD box according to the Harmony site.

Overall though, it's a nice curvy remote with nice feedback on the buttons and LED lighting to indicate what source is selected.

Installation & Configuration

On the Harmony page you can check if your device is compatible with the remote and it looks like there's a huge database of supported devices:

COMPATS.JPG

Once I confirmed compatibility I created a Harmony account and began downloading the installer for the software which appears to be just a plugin for the browser to load the Harmony setup page (opens in browser, no start menu shortcuts are created) which is neat I thought as I dislike having too much software for various hardware cluttering the start menu.

I encountered a strange issue in Firefox 3.6 where the sync progress was stuck a quarter of the way so I cancelled it, opened IE and it continued from there once I went on to the myharmony webpage. Chrome is not supported sadly, I would have preferred some Chrome support as I had to wipe dust off IE before I proceeded ¬_¬

Once the configuration was done (properly this time!) here's what it looked like

webportal.jpg

I could now configure the buttons and do some other jazzy stuff but I just want to see how it is set up out the box after a sync so off I went...

In Use

Out of the box all 4 devices core functions worked apart from source select for the TV, I had to configure these in the Harmony website and sync the remote. Quite impressed with how it's worked as well, there are some nice touches like when in Satellite control mode, adjusting the volume will adjust the volume on the TV instead of the currently active device - Other remotes might have this too but from previous experience with one4all remotes this wasn't the case!

I know this remote is the lower Harmony model and supports only 4 deviced and that the higher end ones do have more features but at this kind of price I think it does everything most would need and then beyond via the customisations in the Harmony control panel on the web portal.

I'd give it a solid 7.5 out of 10, the minus points for the browser hiccups I encountered and also the slight pointers about ergonomics. Other than that the remote looks, feels and dishes out some business in this price bracket I reckon.

Logitech got the right price point, maybe missing one or 2 good features - we don't need a remote to recharge itself, We do want all the DVR buttons, we don't need something that will support 25 devices (who has that many things in one room anyway), we do want to program them with the best IR database available for universal remotes.

Would have been nice to have wii/ps3 support though, without an expensive adapter

would have liked more activity buttons, with 4 devices you could have 5 activities (watch TV, watch DVD, watch Xbox360, watch Bluray for example, all could be mapped to the color buttons :) )

be nice to know if this has device state? I presume it does not as with one activity button it wouldn't be needed (would remember the power states and configuration of devices, so you could go from 'watch TV' to 'Play xbox360' and it would power off the DVR and power on the 360 and change the TV input as well as the AV receiver input with 1 button press

Overall, for those who want good compatibility with little fuss, this is likely the remote. If you want extra neat cool features - move up a few models.

What you're looking for is the 600, as this one doesn't support activities at all, but basic all in one remote functionality. you'll still need an adapter for the PS3 though, since they decided to not spend 1 cent to add an ir receiver instead of a BT remote.

Personally, I'm glad I bought my Harmony One back when I did, when it was half the price it is now though, I wouldn't want to be without it, but I also don't think I would pay what they're currently charging for it.

It does, this 300i has a single 'Watch TV' button at the top. I've got one, mine turns on the sky box, turns on the tv and sets it to the correct channel. Only 1 activity button but very useful all the same.

    • If its the devs fault you would think Unreal would help M$ take full advantage of Unreal and work with them to fix the performance issues. Otherwise they are catching unwarranted bad press.
    • Thanks for the advice guys, I'll give my current GPU a clean and then run the benchmarks to see how similar it is. Hopefully a bit of a clean-out will help it last a bit longer.
    • Pretty sure those will still be in this game. The series' well-explored psychosis themes will return as well.

    • Microsoft making much needed change to Windows 11, 10 Patch Tuesday security updates by Sayan Sen Recently, Microsoft delivered its latest Defender patches for Windows 11 ISOs. These definitions are released from time to time alongside the general security updates available during Patch Tuesday. Speaking of Defender, the company has now announced another important change that affects how security updates are delivered to enterprise devices running Windows. According to a recent announcement, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint's endpoint detection and response (EDR) updates will no longer be bundled with the monthly Windows security updates or Patch Tuesdays. Instead the company is shifting delivery of these updates to Microsoft Update, bringing EDR servicing in line with several other Microsoft Defender components. If you recall, Microsoft last year moved PowerShell updates to Microsoft Update (MU) as well since it provides automatic updates for Microsoft products and services. Thus the move is intended to allow Microsoft to deliver EDR improvements and security enhancements independently of the OS's regular monthly update cycle; this should enable faster deployment of protection updates without requiring organizations to wait for the next Patch release. For those unfamiliar, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint's EDR capabilities are designed to help organizations detect, investigate, and respond to advanced threats across managed devices. Keeping these components updated is critical for maintaining protection against evolving attack techniques. The rollout has already began for Windows 10 devices in late May 2026 (last month) and Microsoft says it will gradually expand support to Windows 11 and the remaining supported Windows versions over the coming months. The company expects deployment across Windows 10 and Windows 11 to be completed by fall 2026 or around Q3 of this year. Once the transition is complete, EDR updates will be delivered through Microsoft Update using KB5005292, provided the required prerequisite updates have already been installed. Microsoft is also introducing a new Defender Update Service as part of the change. Following installation of the first update, devices will automatically create a new directory located at %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Microsoft Defender\Defender Update. Microsoft notes that restarts may occasionally be necessary in case of "rare" failure scenarios. For most organizations, the tech giant says no action will be required as long as Microsoft Update is already permitted within their update management strategy. Admins who rely on manually deployed update packages, however, will need to adjust their processes to ensure the new Defender update package is included. Microsoft also recommends reviewing internal documentation and notifying helpdesk and security operations teams about the updated delivery mechanism to avoid confusion during the transition. As a prerequisite, the tech giant notes that systems must be running Sense version 10.8798.25857.1000 or later and have one of the following Windows updates (or later) installed: Win11 24H2 KB5062660 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win11 23H2 KB5062663 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win11 22H2 KB5062663 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win10 22H2 KB5062649 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win10 1809 KB5063877 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2019 KB5063877 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2022 KB5063880 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2025 KB5063878 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) As always, organizations should verify that their update policies align with the new servicing approach before the broader rollout reaches all supported Windows platforms later this year. In case of major problems, the EDR update can be rolled back to the inbox version stored in %ProgramFiles%\\Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) using: MpCmdRun.exe -RevertMde -Product Edr -ToVersion Inbox For those who have access to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center portal, you can view the message here under ID MC1381119.
