You can't downgrade the new one as it will have a different shsh blob and tiny umbrella won't be able to recover your baseband onto the new one.

So, I don't know what to tell you. Kind of the reason I've held off getting a replacement plus my batteries doing good now. Or better then it was a few months ago

just plug in to itunes and it will backup everything you have on it music movies Apps you name it and when ya get your replacement iphone be it 3GS or iphone 4 then it will have the newest iOs on it witch is good anyways and then polug in and sync back all your stuff

I want to tether therefore I want to downgrade. I don't want to JB.

as far as i know you could not tether in previous iOses unless you JB it and also having iOs 4.2 or so gives ya alot more options then ya had before. and since you are on ATT i take it you can get a iphone 4 for like $100 or so a refurbished unit or so . but in the end iOs 4.0 and up offer your 3GS alot more

As far as I know, it is impossible to downgrade your baseband. So if you get a replacement phone, you will be stuck with whatever baseband it comes with and will have to wait until an exploit for that baseband is released, while at the same time, never upgrading the baseband by updating via iTunes.

That is also why it is so stressed that unlockers NEVER upgrade using iTunes, or else their baseband will get upgraded and there is no way back.

I do not keep up with the baseband updates however, but it seems like this could help you once you've upgraded? http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ ("Ultra-recycle")
