PS2 Takes Forever to Load Killzone but Not Other Game

Recommended Posts

So recently I picked up a replacement PS2. I had a PS2 slim a long time ago and had sold it and all my games when money got short. I've had the PS3 for some time now and had an incling to play Killzone 1 since I bought KZ2 for PS3 and part 3 is about to come out, and I wanted to get the backstory and actually play the original game. Anyway, I picked up a pre-owned PS2 SCPH-90001 and MGS2: Sons of Liberty and Killzone. MGS2 loads and runs just fine and I have no problems. I've had bad luck with Killzone though. I've been through 2 used copies since nobody seems to have a new one any more unless you buy it online. The first copy froze loading the first campaign. Figured out after some checking it was because there were several surface scratches that you could see through the disc with, so I returned it and got another copy from Gamestop. This second copy looks to be in pretty good shape. No see-through scratches except for one pinhole sized one on the very inner circle of the disc, and what appeared to be white-out in a spot or two on the label side of the disc. I put the game in and the first thing I noticed is that it took about 5 minutes after the Playstation 2 logo for the "Killzone" word to appear in the bottom left to indicate the game was actually starting. Playing through the campaign the game acts like it's having serious problems reading the disc. The initial load time is good, but when you first go to the bunker that has a roof on it in the first mission it's all invisible, then it's there with no textures, and after about a minute it looks normal. People appear with no textures, no heads, etc and then after a couple seconds everything will sort of pop in and look normal. I would be more willing to blame the pre-owned PS2, but it's a fairly newer model with very little wear and tear (the shiny part of the top has a scratch or 2) and Metal Gear Solid 2 loads and plays just fine with no problems. The Killzone disc is not a weird color or anything either, it's a standard DVD with the same surface color as MGS2. Am I just having bad luck with Killzone discs or is this an indicator that maybe there was some tampering or damage done to this PS2?

You will probably find that due to design changes between the slim (SCPH-90001) and previous models of the PS2 are causing these loading problems with Killzone1. I suggest getting hold of a SCPH-5000x model of a PS2, if you really want to play Killzone1 - either that or wait for Sony to re-release it as a PS3 HD Classic - lol
