Wow.

Hawken wins $10 million from League of Legends backers

Fascinating indie mech shooter Hawken has won $10 million in funding for its creators.

VentureBeat reports the princely sum was ponied up largely by Benchmark Capital and FirstMark Capital.

Both companies threw their financial clout behind a little start up called Riot Games for some obscure little online title called League of Legends. League of Legends now attracts millions of users every day, and Tencent bought Riot Games for $400 million last year.

?We were tremendously thankful to be associated with Riot, but we viewed the market as much bigger than a single title. We think that $8 billion to $10 billion will migrate away from packaged goods games and free-to-play will be a lightning rod for those dollars,? Benchmark?s Mitch Lasky said.

Signups for the closed beta are open. Here is a link to them.

Note, the referral link is my personal one, apparently if 3 people sign up using it, i get to reserve a call sign, and naturally I would like to reserve my name, so feel free to use it if you like.

So, how is this game? I'm stuck at work so I can't try it out for myself? It looks amazing from the beta gameplay I've seen.

I have a few questions for those of you who are playing. How does the money system work? (real vs fake) Does it seem like a pay-to-win game, or is it more fair, like League of Legends?

Also, I know there are a bunch of different mechs, and a bunch of parts to choose from. When you change mechs or cores, does the cockpit view change? Or does your first-person cockpit always look the same?

The only thing I'm really disappointed in so far, after watching some videos, is that the mechs do not fall-apart when they die. You see debris and stuff, which is nice, but even when a mech is killed by a rocket, it doesn't explode into pieces. There is still a mech model left over. That is disappointing.

edit: more questions.

Are there any melee attacks? or melee centric mechs?

What are the recommended specs? My desktop is showing is age, I hope I can play this.

Is there friendly fire?

Well I played a few matches today, and I have to say the game is quite good, but there is definite room for improvement. The match-making algorithm definitely needs work and it's painfully obvious that level and equipment give a decided advantage.

More than once I was added to a game with a handful of people in the level 20+ range. They easily bested everyone else, and rarely died. Being a new player at level 1-3 with barely any talent points or equipment, it was frustrating to say the least.

But the gameplay is fun, and the graphics are pretty damn good. And best of all, my 4 year old computer can play the game easily on medium settings with no slow down.

I did encounter some technical issues. I was disconnected mid match a couple times. And, my game even crashed to the desktop once. But those are to be expected in a beta. I don't doubt the game will see some updates and fixes.

Hopefully the UI will see some minor tweaks, but overall it was good.

Played it for about an hour and a half so far, and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Generally speaking, I'm not a huge fan of mech games, usually because I find them to be too slow moving for my tastes (and honestly, because I tend to suck at them). Hawken seems fun to me because the mechs actually have a decent amount of agility to them, especially once you factor in the dodging and dashing. Combat was pretty fun, though as spacer said, there is definitely an advantage for people with tricked out mechs. My level 7 trainee mech got slapped around by some of the higher-level guys, and it was clearly a function of their loadout more than their skill.

I'm going to play it some more over this next week, and I'll post back if my impressions change, but so far I'm definitely encouraged by this one. Hopefully this game gets a good community behind it, and hopefully the developers can support it with proper balancing and some new maps. I feel like the foundation of a great game is here, though. In fact, I feel confident enough in its future that I may actually buy an XP booster.

Oh, and I'm liberation07 on there. I'll add anybody and everybody, even if you're a crazy axe murderer.

I played a couple matches of it last night. The game is definitely intense and looks great but it still feels a bit wonky. Still unsure about whether or not I like the dashing mechanic. Other than that it feels pretty solid.

Gave it a try today. probably last time.

It's not a mech game, it's a first person action shooter, where the "people" happen to be mechs. there's nothing mech about it, they move like quarterbacks and have no need for tactical or strategic play.

I though this would be a game that would give MWO some competition and cause both games to be better games, but if I was to play this game, I would be better off playing any other quality FPS that doesn't require micro transactions for everything. I'd bebetter of playing UT3, plays better, better netcode, and both are plain FPS shooters.

To bad it looked promising before, and there's been a lack of decent mech games, but I guess for now it's just MWO. but that's OK, MWO is shaping up real good, and at least there you can buy all the important game stuff with in game earnable credits.

    • Windows 11 KB5094126 BSODing, freezing, forcing BitLocker lockout, breaks OneDrive, and more by Sayan Sen Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5094126 and KB5093998 last week as the latest Patch Tuesday updates. Following that the company also published the accompanying dynamic updates under KB5094149, KB5095971, and KB5094156. While Microsoft has so far not acknowledged any major problems with the release, some users online are running into problems. These range from OneDrive and Dropbox access issues, BitLocker recovery lockouts, to blue screens and BSODs. The most common one seems to be happening with HP systems wherein affected users say they hit 0xc0430001 BSOD (blue screen of death) error code after the KB5094126 update. We wonder if this could be related to the recent bug we covered on HP devices wherein the ongoing Secure Boot certificate updates are leading to similar issues. While we are not certain, users affected by this issue likely need to ensure that the boot.stl file is included on the installation media (such as a USB installer or ISO), if the above-mentioned dynamic updates are deployed. If this file is missing, computers may fail to boot from the installation media and could display the error 0xc0430001. This STL file is used by Secure Boot to verify that the boot files are trusted, so it must match the same Windows version and system architecture. To ensure the file is included, Microsoft recommends using the Update WinPE script, which automatically updates the image and handles the required files. Alternatively, you can manually copy the boot.stl file from the Windows\Boot\EFI folder on a Windows device and place it in the matching folder on your installation media before deploying the updated image. Aside from blue screening some users also note their systems have been freezing following the update. This could be happening to Lenovo PCs specifically. In the case of the OneDrive and Dropbox access issues, a user figured out that there could be a conflict with UAC. He explained: "Okay, so I did some digging, and in our environment KB5094126 breaks OneDrive and Dropbox in Explorer. I went through all our GPOs and found out that the combination of disabling UAC and having my user being a local admin breaks OneDrive in Explorer. ... If I enable UAC again, then it works, even with KB5094126 still installed." Hopefully, Microsoft will look into these issues. • It is when it's a desktop in my house though for a PC that's lightly used and not really important when it is. If it was a laptop, it would be a different story. The real solution is varied and begins starting at post #22 in that thread.
