Do NOT generalize the views of the US military based on two reactions to this disaster. I have the disclaimer in my signature for a reason. Anyone else in the military should as well. The military or the government would not release a statement saying "haha Japan you got served." The government does not feel that way. The military does not feel that way. Yes, there are some who are misguided. Those people are not limited to military personnel. You generalizing the world's largest VOLUNTEER military is just as bad as everyone laughing at Japan right now. Nobody is forced into military service in this country. That said, no able bodies are rejected. There will always be some bad apples who are, as we say, on their OFP (own ****ing program). Free speech sucks sometimes, yes, but everyone is entitled to it.

Sometimes I wonder why I serve when I have ignorant bigots like you at home on their OFP.

If you think people like that make up any significan portion of the 300+ million people in the US, then YOU are the ignorant one. Of course, the idiots are the only ones that the media want to show, so that's all people ever see. And just so you know, I spent over two years of my time in the Navy stationed in Japan just south of Tokyo, so if I had still been there, I would have been affected by this as well.

Considering that the military is made up of people from all aspects of society, it is only logical that there would be a small percentage of nutcases there, just as there are in society at large. To think otherwise would be ignorant. The same goes for any group that draws its members from the general population (priests, politicians, cops, celebrities, etc.).
