Does Internet Explorer 9 have any safeguards build-in that prevents plugins (read: Flash) from crashing the entire browser and just makes you reload the tab instead, something similar to Safari 5 and Chrome?

Firefox, IE, Chrome, and Safari all sandbox plugins.

So does anyone know how to get IE 9 to do the search keyword shortcut like Google Chrome? (i.e. in chrome I can set it up so that I can type "nwn xbox" and have it search neowin for xbox).

I really like that feature in chrome...

There is still a way to do this which is left over functionality from the old TweakUI days. (Someone should get around to building an app to help with this again!)

Here's an example wikipedia.reg file to guide you in adding some:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\wiki]
" "="+"
"+"="%2B"
"%"="%25"
"&"="%26"
"#"="%23"

The key name, "wiki" is the search prefix. the @ (Default) is the web address with %s representing the placement of the search string. Everything else are the default replacements most search engines use such as spaces are +'s, etc. but you can change them if, for example, a search engine you use changes spaces to %20; you can also add any extra special ones you need to the bottom of the list. This results in me being able to type "wiki IE9" (without quotes) in my address bar and it automatically seaching Wikipedia for me. Should be easy for you to adapt this to Neowin and other sites. :)

When you open IE9... 2 (iexplore.exe) processes are opened then if you open 2 more tabs 2 more (iexplore.exe) proccesses are opened. I just tested this on my PC. Bit if you close the 2 tabs the (iexplore.exe) prcocesses are still running I think this has to do with the speed boost that IE9 delivers thanks to gpu handling

IE8 had this functionality as well. There are multiple processes, so that when a tab crashes the whole browser doesn't crash, and then the specific tabs can be recovered. The master process is the smallest one usually, with each extra one handling one or two tabs each. Yes, I believe Chrome and Safari (maybe also Firefox?) do something similar. AFAIK all iexplore.exe processes SHOULD close when the main window is closed. This might be a residual bug or something attributable to Flash ;)

Question -- when I open a pinned website, why does IE 9 open with no toolbars? Is this normal, or something I'm doing wrong?

Settings are saved per pinned site, so you can redesign each "app"-like pinned site differently and to your preference once it's created.

I don't know what it is, Internet Explorer 9 feels slow to me. Dunno what it is about it...

Any Add-ons or TPL lists? Try disabling them all.

Cheers! :D

Nope, it's a clean install. I was previously switching between Chrome and Opera, both of which felt quicker. I also hate not having a "home dial" page, i miss it from opera/chrome.

Back when I started using Opera 9 with old IE7 a couple of years back, I missed having SpeedDial in IE. For a while, I used similar functionality called EasyHomepage from IE7Pro, but it never worked right form e in IE8 or IE9. A few months back, I found a website called Only2Clicks.com that works like SpeedDial does, and even has a couple of extra features such as multiple tabs for different groups of pages. I even have it set as my homepage in Opera, though I still tend to use SpeedDial more since it is faster (especially with my modded button that works like a show/hide SpeedDial toggle).

The new tab page in IE9 has functionality which shows your most frequently visited sites. Isn't that similar to Opera's SpeedDial? I have about:Tabs set as my homepage and I love it.

Does anybody know how I can point the "new tab page" to a specific URL, instead of the speed dial thing, or the home page, or a blank page? I know those are the only options built-in, but I am wondering if there is a registry hack or addon I can use for this.

Thanks!

Internet options - Tabs - settings - when a new tab is opened - pick your options.

Yorak: Not without also setting that page as your homepage. No registry hacks that I've seen.

Okay, thanks. :) Since it is my backup browser, I will survive without having Neowin as my homepage...

Thanks, but unfortunately this only allows you to: 1) set to a blank page, 2) set to your home page, or 3) open the normal tab speed dial type deal.

But regardless, I will survive this way. :)

Thanks. :)

I'm loving IE9 but there are couple of deal breakers that are ruining the experience for me. These may make me sound like I'm being lazy, but browsing should be as efficient a process as it can be:

- inability to pin sites to the new tab page

- when you click a folder on the bookmarks bar, moving your mouse over other folders on the bookmarks bar doesn't open those folders. Instead I have to click each folder to open it. Freaking annoying!

- address bar needs a "paste and go button" option upon right clicking.

- Chrome has spoiled me. I NEED "open in InPrivate session" when I right click a link! It is extremely useful when browsing reddit or something and you wanna check out a NSFW link.

- Certain extensions that I use need to release new versions that are more stable/compatible with IE9. I'm looking at you Lastpass. Thing is causing stupid crashes all the time.

- I wish there was some kind of hide bookmark bar shortcut.

- Adblock TPL lists are a very good feature but they are ineffective in blocking many ads. Firefox's adblock plus is pretty much the best out there, Chrome's version of it would take second place, and Fanboy's list for Opera would take third place, and then IE9's TPL lists: when it comes to the matter of effectiveness for blocking ads.

- I really wish IE9 had greasemonkey/userscript support. I need my caverns link checker!! And no the IE7Pro extension's scripts feature doesn't cut it.

- Would love to see an autopager-like solution for IE9. It is something I absolutely require when browsing.

Other than all that I love the fact that it is a light, fast, attractive, pixel-friendly, modern browser that is well integrated with windows 7 :D

Agreed! I've just been skewing my results by opening the ones I want like 40 times. Maybe in IE10.

Ctrl+Shift+L should work as paste and go as soon as you have copied the string, no need to highlight the address bar or click. No UI for it, given, but it's there.

Googled and found this trick: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/open-in-inprivate-window-right-click-menu-ie8/ might still work in IE9.

Alt+V+T+F? ;)

Agreed! but it's really only meant to be used as Privacy protection, everything else is just a handy abuse of the filtering :D, for real Adblocking capability IE has Simple Adblock or AdMuncher. Unfortunately both cost something, but they are excellent products with AdMuncher being the best I've seen. Check the IE9 Adblocking thread for more on those.

Any NoScript like addons?

For adblock I am using Fanboys adblock list but it seems to do a mediocre job.

Youtube HTML5 is horrible though,

- Seek bar / Progress Bar - is bugged

- Resolution Option Stays Up

- Re staring Video using seek bar sometimes reloads it.

W.T.F. YouTube W.T.F.

thank you SO MUCH! dude you are awesome!

You mean the new tab button? :p

No, I meant in the same tab! I used to use it back when I didn't have Only2Clicks as my homepage, and I always hated how I couldn't set up Speed Dial to work with the Home button, so I just set up a second button that would bring up (or hide, whichever the case may be) SpeedDial in the same tab without actually leaving the webpage I was viewing. Even now, with using Only2Clicks as my hompage in Opera, I kept my SpeedDial button as well because SpeedDial is just faster and has all of the same sites as my primary tab on O2C. :D

    • RevPDF 4.5.0 by Razvan Serea RevPDF is a free, fully offline PDF editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux that lets you edit text and images directly inside PDF files — no internet connection, no account, and no cloud uploads required. Unlike bloated alternatives that demand subscriptions and constant connectivity, RevPDF fits in under 60MB on desktop while delivering a complete editing toolkit: annotate, redact, sign, compress, split, merge, convert, and reorganize pages, all processed locally on your device. Smart font matching ensures edited text blends seamlessly with the original, and multi-language support includes RTL scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew. Where most PDF editors force you to choose between features and simplicity, RevPDF manages both. You can build interactive forms from scratch with text fields, checkboxes, and dropdowns, permanently redact sensitive data before sharing, draw freehand on contracts and diagrams, and add custom watermarks — all without a single file leaving your machine. Edit Text and Images Directly Inside PDFs RevPDF supports true inline PDF editing — not just annotation layers on top of a document, but actual modification of existing text and images within the file. A smart font-matching engine identifies the font used in the original document and applies it automatically when you make edits, so changes blend naturally with the surrounding content. You can reposition elements, resize images, and update text across single pages or entire documents. RevPDF 4.5.0 release notes: This is one of the biggest updates to RevPDF yet. A lot of things people have been asking for are finally here. New Features Auto Redaction Permanently redact sensitive text and areas from your PDFs before sharing. Clean, irreversible, and fully offline. Comments, Links & Bookmarks Add comments for review, insert clickable links, and create bookmarks to jump around long documents without scrolling forever. Find & Replace Search across the whole document and replace text in one go. Long overdue. Split Pages Vertically or Horizontally Split any page down the middle, vertically or horizontally. Perfect for scanned books or double-page spreads. New Drawing Tools More tools for freehand drawing and markup, better for annotations, sketches, and detailed notes. Continuous Scrolling in Editor The editor now scrolls continuously through pages instead of jumping between them. Working through long documents is a lot smoother now. PDF Metadata Editor View and edit the metadata stored inside your PDFs, including title, author, subject, and keywords. Better Font Matching Text edits now blend in more naturally by doing a better job of matching the original font. Tabbed PDF Viewer Open multiple PDFs at once in tabs and switch between them without going back to the home screen. Add Links Insert hyperlinks anywhere in your PDF, to external URLs or to other pages within the document. Share & Print Shortcuts Share or print directly from the editing screen, home screen, and viewer. No extra steps. Minor Updates Paste images directly from clipboard into your PDF New image editing tools for more control over images inside documents Bug Fixes Fixed file saving issues on Windows and Linux Everything still works fully offline. No login, no cloud, no account. Your files stay on your device. • Interesting. I'm not using a VPN with my phone. I tried though my home internet (Rogers) and my cellular internet (Telus) and both trigger the dialog above.
